The Jays affiliates won two games and lost three. The Lansing Lugnuts split a double-header with the Dayton Dragons and the two teams combined for 29 runs.

Las Vegas 4 Fresno 3

With veteran Fresno starter Ryan Vogelsong getting a surprise call-up to San Francisco, former Jays farmhand Josh Banks got the spot start and gave up four runs in 4.1 innings. Eric Thames led the offense with a 2-for-3 night. He slammed his second homer of the year and drove in two runs. He also walked. Brett Lawrie went 1-for-4 and now has had a hit in each of the 11 games he's played in. David Cooper went 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Darin Mastroianni was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Manny Mayorson went 2-for-3 with a double. On the mound, Scott Richmond gave up just two runs in five innings. He allowed three hits and one walk. He struck out six batters. Wil Ledezma threw three scoreless innings, while Winston Abreu gave up a run in one-third of an inning before Rommie Lewis closed the door for his fourth save.

Binghamton 4 New Hampshire 1

Joel Carreno received the start for the Jays' minor league club. He gave up six hits (three homers) and four runs. Vince Perkins, Clint Everts, and Dumas Garcia each pitched a single inning. The Fisher Cats batters came up against Robert Carson, one of the Mets' top pitching prospects. Both Adeiny Hechavarria and Travis d'Arnaud had two hits. Jonathan Diaz went 1-for-2 with two walks. Mark Sobolewski went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI for the club. John Tolisano went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. Michael McDade and Moises Sierra each went 0-for-4.

Lakeland 4 Dunedin 3

The Baby Jays knocked out 12 hits but still took the loss. Two rehabbing MLB pitchers made appearances: Brandon Morrow (4 IP, 2 R) and Frank Francisco (1 IP, 2 K). The best pitching performance came from Matt Wright who did not allow a run in 2.0 innings of work. At the plate, Kenny Wilson went 1-for-3 with a walk and strikeout. He stole one base and was caught trying to nab a second base. Jon Talley and A.J. Jimenez had three hits each. The latter player hit his first homer of the season and is now hitting .364. Justin Jackson went 2-for-4 and currently has a .391 average. Brad Glenn went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.  Ryan Goins was 1-for-5 with three Ks.

Lansing 8 Dayton 4 (Game 1)

Egan Smith got the start for the Lugnuts in the first game of the double-header. He gave up no earned run but errors led to three unearned runs. He walked one, gave up five hits and struck out five batters. Scott Gracey worked in relief and struck out five in just 2.1 innings. Jacob Marisnick had three hits, including a double and a homer, and drove in two runs. Marcus Knecht went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBI and a walk. Michael Crouse was 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI and a walk. Jake Murphy was 1-for-2 with a walk. Markus Brisker was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Gari Pena went 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk and a strikeout. He also made two errors.

Dayton 9 Lansing 8 (Game 2)

Usually in the second game of a double-header in the minors you see a pretty low-scoring game; not so in this contest with 17 runs scored. After a stellar first start of the season, Drew Hutchison was knocked around for five runs and seven hits in 3.0 innings. The Lansing bullpen had yet another meltdown with Drew Permison allowing two runs in 2.1 innings and Alex Pepe giving up two runs in 1.2 innings. Pepe was wild with a capital "W." He walked two batters, through a wild pitch, hit three batters and made two errors. That is a nightmare outing. Pepe wasn't the only one with sloppy defense; four more fielders made errors: Oliver Dominguez, Gustavo Pierre, Michael Crouse, and Hutchison. At the plate, Marcus Knecht, Pierre, and Crouse had two hits each. Crouse hit two doubles and drove in three runs. Carlos Perez went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a walk and a strikeout. Markus Brisker had a rough game with three strikeouts and a walk.

Three Stars:
3. A.J. Jimenez, 3 hits and a homer in 1 game
2. Marcus Knecht, 4 hits and 3 RBI in 2 games
1. Michael Crouse, 4 hits, 2 doubles, triple, five RBI in 2 games

A.J. Jimenez, the mysteriously invisible jays' catching prospect.

Jimenez and Perez are both off to fine starts with the bat.  The Dragons stole 4 bases off the Hutchison/Perez combination; Hutchison may have an issue with holding runners.

I don't quite understand the lack of appreciation for the offence Jiminez put up in Lansing last year.  It was well above league average.  For a 20 year-old catcher, it was excellent.

I checked the gametime temperature and wind in Lansing for yesterday's games and it was similar to what we had in the GTA yesterday.  In a word.  Ugly.  That means that pitchers and fielders would have had a little feeling in their hands and any flyball would have been an adventure.  Just standing still would have been difficult.

The Lansing outfield is as advertised so far this year:

Michael Crouse  .320/.452/.680 (1.132 OPS)
Jacob Marisnick  .313/.371/.500 (.871 OPS)
Marcus Knecht   .310/.394/.448  (.842 OPS)

complimented by the phenom, Carlos Perez:  .400/.483/.560 (1.043 OPS)

(To spare Kelekin any unwarranted grief, I will withhold the hitting stats of Gari Pena and Bryson Namba.)

MatO, I guess the wind was blowing out to left in Lansing, and was at the back of the baserunners going from first. :)

The boxscores say the wind was blowing left to right at 25 mph.  It's a wonder that runners were able to make it to second base let alone have the courage to attempt a steal...

Very good point MatO about weather conditions. High winds blow the ball around and can create watering eyes.
That Friday night game (Cecil) was colder I believe than the 2 day games. That has to have degrees of difficulty for the pitchers. Also the home team, Boston, would be more used to these conditions than the indoor playing Jays.

I have to be more patient in judging players, small sample size, weather and other factors just do not make for equality.

That's probably not taking into account gusts well in excess of that.  On the other hand, Perez would have probably had to aim his throws toward the SS position for them to end up in the vicinity of 2nd base on SB attempts.

You know what the golfers say in these circumstances, Mat.  Use the 3 iron and keep it low and hard.  I don't know that Perez has the arm for that.

Reminds me of the time the Jays were winded-out at the Ex.  I vaguely remember the day.  I think it was April as well.  The wind must have been really something to blow Jim Clancy off the mount.  Clancy was a big man.

Thanks ayjackson, you're so sweet!

I shouldn't be so quick to judge on Gary Pena, after all he has a 16.7% walk rate.

...So, how about that Ryan Goins?

Gerry - Monday, April 18 2011 @ 09:41 PM EDT (#232995) #
Ryan Goins hasn't been able to hit in high A in over 200 at-bats over parts of two seasons.  In my trip to spring training I thought Kevin Nolan was a better option, at least offensively.  I see Nolan had a couple of hits tonight in Dunedin's win.  At this stage I doubt that Goins is a priority guy within the system so I expect to see Nolan get more at-bats if Goins doesn't turn it around.

Well the wind was howling in Lansing for sure Mike, but it was blowing from right to left so it was in the runners face.  Perez is having an awesome year with the bat, but his defense needs ALOT of work at the catching position.  I have seen 10 or 11 bases stolen on him counting the five stolen bases Michigan State had against him in the exhibition game and I have seen him pick on guy off while throwing one more out.  His bat is Dunedin ready for sure, but his defense makes me think he may spend the full season in Lansing because he isn't ready defensively.

The wind was a contant 25 mph on Sunday, but did at times gust as high as 35 or 40 mph.  It was a miserable day to watch a ball game, let a lone two.  Now you know how 10 errors were committed in the second game between the two teams.  :)

LF,how is the rest of Perez' defensive game? Blocking pitches in the dirt, fielding the bunt in front of the plate, chasing low foul pops etc...

I have always felt that a catcher with advanced offensive skills and much work to do behind the plate (Simmons, Biggio etc.) ought to be moved.

I noticed that the Luggies had Perez batting leadoff tonight. He doubled and singled and scored twice. It has been a very good night on the farm, with Deck McGuire and Zach Stewart turning in solid outings for Dunedin and New Hampshire.

He needs to work on some things.  He has a fair amount get by him which to me means he isn't moving very well behinde the plate.  A lot of teams will run on him and a big problem that I see is that I think he rushes his throws.  He drops the ball on the exchange a bit when runners take off on him.  I think he needs to soften his hands a bit too because there are a few that will hit him in the glove and drop on the ground.

I haven't had a chance to see him field a bunt yet, but fielding fould pop ups appear to not be a problem with him.  He runs well too which is probably why he was batting lead off yesterday.  I think there may be a position change in his future.  Keep in mind, I have a very small sample size that I'm basing this opinion on.  I have only seen him in three games so far this year and the weather has presented challenges in all of them (wind, cold, rain, etc.)

I agree he could be moved and work on what he needs to work on.  I think he is being blocked by Jimenez a bit in that Jimenez is more advanced defensively and has a pretty good bat himself.  Jimenez I would say has the better arm and is better defensively while Perez I would say has the better bat.  We will see what happens here in Lansing if we ever get a day that is condusive to playing baseball rather than playing pond hockey.

Mike Green - Tuesday, April 19 2011 @ 10:39 AM EDT (#233014) #
Thanks very much, LF.  It sounds like Perez might naturally be converted to centerfield rather than an infield positon as most catchers would.
bpoz - Tuesday, April 19 2011 @ 10:48 AM EDT (#233015) #
LF...Thanks for the details on who has what tools & what needs to be worked on.
They seem to be a fairly young team. 2nd place so far looks good.
uglyone - Tuesday, April 19 2011 @ 11:57 AM EDT (#233027) #
anyone else think it might be a good time to sell high on D'Arnaud while his "top prospect" status is still intact?
Hodgie - Tuesday, April 19 2011 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#233044) #
It would be premature to trade any of the potential catchers until at least one establishes themselves at the major league level. I like all of them in different ways but there are questions about each and every one of them that range from defense, to offense to long term position viability. The Texas Rangers and their troika of can't miss catching prospects should be a lesson in this regard...
