Halfway to Joe D.
Okay, twenty-eight is when it may be worth starting to pay attention.

That's the length of Andre Ethier's current hitting streak, and exactly half as long as the legendary Joe D'iMaggio's streak back in '41. It's already the second-longest streak in the illustrious history of the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers. (Quick, a thousand cuttlefish says you can't name who's first, at 31, without looking it up).

So Bauxites, how far does Andre's streak extend?

I remember Mondesi had a bit of a streak with them back in the day.  I'm going with him.

good guess, wr80, but right position, wrong era (so no cuttlefish for you!) ... click through the link to see the answer.

The Duke?
DiscoDave - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 03:12 PM EDT (#234070) #
Darn.  I never would have guessed the leader.

I didn't look it up, but in a post-election flashback of Bill Clinton, it came to me.  Steve Sax.
Mike Green - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 03:16 PM EDT (#234072) #
Ack, I didn't read the comments.  Steve Sax does not, and never did, play the outfield.

Ken Landreaux? Did I even spell it right?
Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 03:24 PM EDT (#234074) #

Mags, you spelled it right, but got it wrong. Think "President Nixon" :-)

Mike, Sax did, in fact, play some outfield in his career -- 66 games worth -- but you're right. That's wrong!

Mick, when have I ever let a little thing like a fact stand in the way of an oblique light-hearted reference to Clinton's various foibles?
Magpie - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 03:52 PM EDT (#234076) #
Nixon? Uh-oh... Willie Crawford? Couldn't be him...
Magpie - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 04:03 PM EDT (#234077) #
This is going to bother me - I wrote an enormous piece on the Dodgers a couple years back, and there's a fair chance I wrote something about whoever it is that has this record. Without noticing the record.

Oops.
Magpie - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 04:09 PM EDT (#234078) #
Ken Landreaux did have a 31 game hit streak!

Okay, he was still with the Twins at the time ... it was the year before he was traded to the Dodgers... but you see why I thought of him... not completely insane here...

When I was a kid, I seem to remember Willie Davis had a pretty good hitting streak, and he was an outfielder, but I have no idea if he has the record or not.
Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#234080) #
Mags, you're right, it couldn't have been Crawford ... but dan got the right Willie ... the at-the-time future HOFer, Willie Davis.
Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#234081) #
And MIke, remember, I work in  marketing and PR. These "facts" you speak of -- are SO overrated! :-)

Grumble.

Well, President Johnson (slightly more accurate) would probably have given it away...

I think Willie Davis had the longest write-up of any Dodger in my Lobby piece. That's right... longer than Jackie, longer than Koufax, longer than the Duke. And without ever noticing his hit streak.
Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 03 2011 @ 09:10 PM EDT (#234087) #
Mags, don't grumble -- but do explain! Davis' streak was summer of '59. Nixon was in office!

Summer of '69, as per your link, Mick.

Yes, thanks Jeremy. Didn't notice the typo!

With all of these '59s and '69s flying around, it's fair to report that Ethier's extended it to 29.  (And per the original message, I start noticing at 20 games.  Not with the thought of getting to 56, but just for amusement.)
Magpie - Wednesday, May 04 2011 @ 07:42 AM EDT (#234111) #
Ah - I didn't know when he had the streak. I very much think of Davis as a mid 60s player - the Dodgers championship teams in 1963 and 1965, his 3 error inning against the Orioles in 1966 (Koufax's last game...)

Nixon was still in office in '59 - just the #2 spot!
