And McGuire Bretts Tampa?

Colorado Springs 0 at Las Vegas 3

Brett Cecil, take a bow. The lefty absolutely dominated Colorado Springs on Monday night. Check this out: 9 innings. 4 hits. 2 walks. 7 strikeouts. 0 runs. 12 ground outs. 3 fly outs. Can you ask for anything more?

I almost don't even want to mention the offense so as not to deflect any attention from Cecil's gem. Nobody reached base more than once, and Kevin Howard hit a solo homer.

New Hampshire - scheduled day off

Tampa 1 at Dunedin 2

Tampa got off to a good start, scoring in the top of the first on a walk and two singles. For the next six innings, they had just three more base-runners, none of which advanced past first base, as Deck McGuire pitched a brilliant game to garner the win. McGuire allowed just three hits and two walks in seven innings, and struck out eight. Matt Wright and Wes Etheridge were perfect over the final two frames to close out the 2-1 victory.

The offense didn't do much, but they managed to eke out just enough to win. Kevin Nolan had two hits including a double.

Lansing - scheduled day off

DSL Blue Jays 1 at DSL Tigers 2

Gabriel Cenas went 0-1 with a walk and was lifted for a pinch-runner in the 8th.

Three Stars!
3. Kevin Howard - a homer!
2. Deck McGuire - 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 K
1. Brett Cecil - complete game shutout

Is Kevin Nolan any sort of a prospect ? He seems to have made a lot of improvement with his bat the past couple of seasons.

Yeah he's been very good, but he's 23 and at that age should be playing in NH or LV. He seems like a real sleeper, but i wonder how good his defense at second really is.

Nolan is a big guy, not generally shortstop size, so it's difficult to see him as a shortstop in the major leagues.  I did note him in my spring training reports as a guy who was hitting well in Dunedin.  It's tough for a guy who doesn't have a fixed position to make it to the majors but if he keeps hitting he could grab a utility role of sorts.

I really hope Cecil's ready for the major leagues again soon. The Jays could use him, and I like him.

John Lott, in the National Post, has an excellent story on two guys from the same town, Henderson Alvarez and Nestor Molina.

Alvarez and Molina “come from a rough part of Venezuela,” Paddy said. Their background helps to explain their drive to succeed, he said.

“They both have natural ability and strong minds — a desire to be good. They both have simple mechanics on the mound. The biggest thing with those two guys is that they’re fearless — they’re not afraid to compete.”

Toronto is loaded with big-bodied pitching prospects. But at the moment, two 6-foot-1, 175-pound youngsters from Valencia are pushing their way to the front of the class.

Thanks for the report Dave. Any word on Cecil's fastball in this latest outing?

Knecht is now 2nd in AVG, 1st in OBP, 2nd in SLG, 2nd in OPS in the Midwest League.

My list of players I would like to see get promoted:

Lansing: Knecht, Marisnick, Hutchison, Barnes, Turnbull.
Dunedin: Glenn, Jackson, McGuire, Molina, Wright, Gailey.
New Hampshire: No one really.  Most of these guys I'd like to see get a full season, which makes the Dunedin promotions harder, although some of the relievers could easily be moved up to AAA.

Moving up Glenn and Jackson to NH, which I foavor, wouldn't hurt anyone important unless you still consider Tolisano important. If Jackson takes over 2B and Glenn LF, there's a lot fewer at-bats for Tolisano.

On the pitching side, the NH and LV bullpens is chock-full of non-prospect older guys you can lose without downside.

Everts, Collazo, and Abreu at AAA are easily dismissed, or any two of them, then you can move up two guys from NH (say Uvideo and Koerecky(sp)) and then you have room for Wright and Gailey.

McGuire and Molina would be a bit more tricky because Bobby Ray is in the rotation now so there's not a LaMura type you can just brush aside.
Ultimately they may give up on Ray as a starter but I don't think they would have moved him down there to start if they were not goingto give him several turns to see if he was right.

I`m not sure Jackson is a better prospect than Tolisano at this point.  They seem to be in a race for the same role on a major league bench.  If Tolisano had repeated A+ this year, he could easily be putting up similar numbers to JJ.

Another six-inning shutout start for Hutchison, his third in a row. This time he gave up 4 hits, walked 2, struck out 7. He's pitched 21 consecutive scoreless innings, in that stretch giving up 12 hits, walking 2, striking out 28.

My understanding, from both scouting reports and seeing them both play live, is that Jackson is a far superior defensive player to Tolisano. I haven't seen either of them play a significant amount, so I could be wrong.

that was the script on them from draft day - that Jackson was a wiz with the leather and Tolisano was a guy you'd have to see where you could live with him.
