A big night for the Las Vegas outfield highlighted a 4-1 night on the farm with the lone loss coming in extra innings.

Maybe it's just me but doesn't Eric Thames remind you of Samuel L. Jackson in "Shaft"?  Can you dig it?

Las Vegas 7 Colorado Springs 2

Las Vegas, NV - The 51s scored twice in the first, fourth and seventh innings along with one in the sixth.  The Rockies affiliate scored their runs in the second.

Batting - Eric Thames (3-3) and Travis Snider (3-4) were three-quarters of the way to a cycle.  Thames was a bad mother...I'll shut my mouth but I'm talking about Thames, who was a double short of his cycle while Snider needed a long ball to complete his.  Thames drove in four of the seven runs for Las Vegas.  Adam Loewen (2-3) had a walk and an RBI to round out a productive night for the Vegas outfield.  Ryan Shealy (1-3) clubbed a homer and also earned a walk against his former organization.  Manny Mayorson (1-3) had a double and a walk.  Kevin Howard (1-4) and Craig Stansberry (1-5) made the hit column, David Cooper (0-4) drew a walk and sadly, Brian Jeroloman (0-4) was held off the bases so the BJBBM stays at 20.

Running - Mayorson stole a base but Stansberry was picked off first.

Pitching - Scott Richmond evened his record to 4-4 by only permitting two runs over 6 2/3 innings.  He scattered seven hits and two walks while collecting seven Ks.  Six of his 11 outs in play were on the ground.  Lefty Sean Henn stranded two inherited runners and provided 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.  He gave up just one hit while striking out two to earn the hold.  Danny Farquhar gave up a hit and struck out a batter in one shutout inning.

Defence - Howard mishandled one at third.  The 51s did turn a 6-4-3 double play.

New Hampshire 7 Akron 2

Akron, OH - Not even having a ringer by the name of Travis Hafner could stop the Fisher Cats as they scored six times in the fourth and added another run in the sixth.  The Indians affiliate could only bookend that with runs in the second and eighth innings.

Batting - Dan Perales (2-4) knocked in two runs and drew a walk and Travis d'Arnaud (2-4) had one of the two extra-base hits for New Hampshire with a double.  Callix Crabbe had the other as he hit a homer and two RBI while also getting a base on balls.  Mike McDade (1-4) collected a walk and Adeiny Hechavarria (1-4) had a sacrifice fly.  Moises Sierra (0-1) drew a pair of walks and took one for the team, Yan Gomes (0-3) walked and drove in a run, John Tolisano (0-3) also had a BB and RBI and Mark Sobolewski (0-3) heard ball four once.

Running
- Perales and Sierra were both gunned down trying to steal second.

Pitching - Joel Carreno gave up a single run on three hits and four walks over six innings to bump his record to 5-4.  He also struck out eight.  Yohan Pino fired a scoreless frame against his former team as he allowed just one hit while striking out a batter.  Lefty Evan Crawford allowed a run on one hit in his one inning of work.  B.J. LaMura overcame a hit and a walk by striking out a pair of batters in a shutout ninth.

Defence - A clank-free ball game for the Fisher Cats.

Clearwater 13 Dunedin 12 (10 Innings)

Dunedin, FL - The Phillies affiliate scored twice in the first, fourth and fifth and stepped behind the arc to drain threes in the third and sixth.  Dunedin tallied once in the first and sixth, put up four spots in the fifth and seventh and then scored twice in the ninth to put the game into extra innings.  However, Clearwater got the last laugh with a single run in the top of the tenth for the win.

Batting - Ryan Schimpf (3-5) had the line of the night for Dunedin with a homer, a double, four RBI and two walks.  Justin Jackson and Brian Van Kirk also had three hit nights with Jackson drawing a walk and Van Kirk driving in a run.  Jon Talley (0-3) had the strangest line of the night by drawing four walks.  Sean Ochinko (2-7) tied Schimpf for the RBI lead by knocking in four runs while hitting a triple.  Kevin Ahrens (1-4) had a double, a hit by pitch and two walks.  Brad McElroy (1-3) and Chris Hawkins (1-3) also got on base via ball four.  McElroy also dropped down a sacrifice bunt and took one for the team.   A.J. Jimenez (1-6) and Brad Glenn (0-1) each drove in a run with Glenn driving in the tying run by getting hit by a pitch.  That's three HBPs for you scoring at home and they each happened in the ninth inning.  Dunedin was 6-for-23 with runners in scoring position and left a whopping 17 runners on base.

Running - Chris Hawkins pinch-ran for Van Kirk but did not score.

Pitching - The quick version - lots of homers and ground balls!  Asher Wojciechowski gave up three homers and nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over four innings.  His K-BB total was 3-0 and eight of his 10 outs in play were on the grass.  Scott Gracey gave up three unearned runs over three innings on a hit and a walk.  The lone hit was a home run and he also allowed one of two inherited runners to score.  On the bright side, he struck out a pair of Threshers and six of his seven outs in play were on the green.   Lefty Aaron Loup scattered a hit, a walk and a plunk over 2/3 of a scoreless inning and also threw one to the backstop.  Dumas Garcia made sure none of Loup's runners scored as he pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.  However, the long ball also claimed Garcia as a victim.  He allowed the losing run while yielding four hits.  He did strike out a trio of batters and three of his four outs stayed on the ground.

Defence
- The left side of the infield had a rough night at the office.  Ahrens botched one at third while Jackson mishandled a pair and threw another one away for a three error night.  Hawkins threw out a runner at home from left field and a 6-4-3 double play was turned.  Jimenez was unsuccessful throwing out a base stealer at second with Gracey on the mound.

Lansing 6 South Bend 1

Lansing, MI - The Lugnuts had a run in each of the first two innings before scoring four times in the fourth.  The Diamondbacks affiliate could only manage a run in the seventh.

Batting - Markus Brisker (2-5) set the tone with a leadoff homer, a double and three runs batted in.  Jake Marisnick (2-4) had the other multi-hit game for Lansing and also picked up an RBI.  Jack Murphy (1-3) doubled, walked and drove in a run.  Michael Crouse (1-4) had a double while Marcus Knecht (1-4), Kevin Nolan, K.C. Hobson (1-4) and Matt Nuzzo (1-5) all scratched out singles.  Bryson Namba (0-3) did reach base once by drawing a walk.

Running - No larcenous activity on the basepaths.

Pitching - Drew Hutchison hurled six shutout innings by scattering four hits and two walks.  He struck out seven, three of them in the second innings, and got five groundball outs to improve to 5-2 on the season.  .  Dayton Marze committed a balk and hit a batter along with two hits and a walk but kept the damage to a single run over two innings.  He struck out a batter and induced four groundball outs.  Brandon Berl pitched a clean ninth by punching out two of the batters he faced.

Defence - The Lugnuts converted a 4-6-3 and 3-6-3 double play.

DSL Blue Jays 7 DSL Braves 4

San Pedro de Macoris, DR - The Jays scored five runs in the first and two in the sixth.  The Braves put up single runs in innings four, six, seven and nine.

Batting - Emilio Guerrero (2-4), Jacinto Cipriota (2-4), Mauricio Nagahashi (2-4), Gabriel Cenas (2-3) and Angel Rojas (2-5) had multi-hit games.  Guerrero drove in three runs and Cipriota plated two.  Cesar Barazarte (1-4) drove in a run and Maydawin De La Cruz (1-4) also made the hit parade.  Jonathan Pumarol (0-3) was hit by a pitch and drove in a run.  Cenas was also plunked.  Rojas, Guerrero, De La Cruz and Nagahashi each hit a double.  No Jay drew a walk.

Running - Barazarte stole second and Nagahashi swiped third.

Pitching - Yeyfry Del Rosario allowed one run on two hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings.  He racked up two Ks and induced four groundball outs.  Gilberto Vielma got the win despite allowing one of two inherited runners to score.  He yielded a run of his own in 2 2/3 innings on a hit and two walks while striking out a batter.  Four of his six outs in play remained in the infield.  Steven Romero went three innings to get the save but not before giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.  He did not strike anyone out but all seven of his outs in play were on the ground.

Defence - Cipriota kicked one around in left.  Pumarol was charged with a passed ball but he threw out a base stealer at second with Vielma on the hill.  The Jays also turned a 6-4-3 twin killing.

someone mentioned on Twitter that Hutch is on a run off 21 scoreless innings over his last three games (plus the last three innings of his previous start)

over those three games he has 18 IP, 9 H, 2 BB, and 25K.

Both Lansing and Dunedin have an ASB coming up - I kind of wonder whetherthat break will occasion some more promotions. Probably not, but before too much longer, If Stewart sticks in the majors you might see Molina or McGuire move up to take his spot and Hutch go to Dunedin.

Kudos to posters for including DSL write-ups in this year's Minor League Recap.  It's going to be quite the write-up come short-season time.

Am I the only one who is annoyed - even angry - that Thames isn't up here with the Jays? He posted a .362 obp in his brief stint up here, and has destroyed minor league ball ever since he finally got healthy. He's 24 with enough high level at bats that it wouldn't be rushing him. He would be an upgrade on EE, Rivera, and Davis right now, and patterson seems to be coming back down to earth so he'd likely be an upgrade there. He'd bring a badly needed lefty bat to the lineup as well. What's worse is that we're playing with a short bench already so we wouldn't even have to dump any of those other bats to get him in the lineup.

I was annoyed when they sent him back down in the first place...but now it's feeling more like anger.

The continued presence of non-contributors like Rivera and Encarnacion certainly test the tolerance of the hometown faithful.

I wonder if Rivera's ability to play first base hasn't given him a reprieve from being released. Maybe once Lind has proven that his back is better and that he can take the field every day...

As for EE, at some point (soon, one imagines) the organization is going to have to concede that this just ain't working out. Last year's homeruns have become this year's doubles. A once passable walk rate has deteriorated. Let him be another organization's project.

I agree.  The time will come this season where the Jays should call up Lawrie, Cooper, and Thames and see what they have with them for at least 150 at bats.

Am I the only one a little worried about this pre-draft deal business?  These sorts of things tend to spiral especially if one team decides to make a big deal about this.  I don't see it outside the realm of possibility that a team, frustrated by the Jays ability to acquire new talent, make a stink to the commissioner's office and the Jays getting penalized accordingly.

With that being said, AA is a smart guy and I don't see him getting caught or breaking any written rules.  I'd think that the Jays probably had some sort of agreement that had the Jays drafted Beede in that spot there was a ballpark number that the Jays would meet.  Sortof like, if we draft you in the first round, will you sign for $2.5 million.  Beede probably indicated that he would.  They do this all the time, for example Knecht recently indicated that the Jays came to him and asked him if the Jays drafted him in a certain spot would he sign for X dollars.

Also for you prospect junkies out there.  Have a look at Ronald Guzman.  The Jays have apparently been linked to him.  He's gotta have one of the nicest swings and approachs to hitting I've ever seen out of a 16-year old.  He probably ends up in LF or 1B long-term, but my gosh he will hit.

Check him out on www.youtube.com

I can't imagine the Jays get "caught" about anything. I don't recall it happening at any point in the past, and while I'm not sure how it works exactly in baseball, but in other sports these sort of investigations are basically a joke.

If the Jays have a deal with Beede, why wouldn't they have announced it already?  Why not get him signed and playing in the Jays system somewhere?  In the past, Anthopoulos has complained quite loudly that the drafted prospects are often not signing deals until the absolute deadline, and this essentially costs them a season of development time (or some months of development time anyway).  Clearly he doesn't like this tendency to delay the deals until the deadline.  If he had a deal with a prospect, I'm sure he would want to announce it ASAP, so that the Jays can start working with the kid.   So if Beede is not playing in the Jays system, it's pretty obvious that there's no deal.  At most there might be an understanding of the rough amount of money that might be required to sign him -- but that's a long way from "a deal."

In regards to EE I couldn't agree more. First off, the guy was given a 2.5 mil contract this year because of his potential with the  bat because his defense was mediocre at best at 3rd. Last year he mashed 21 HRs in only 332 PA which would extrapolate to about 30 HRs over a full season while batting a pedestrian .244 which would have been ok IF he continued his HR pace he was on last year, while playing average 3rd base. But it hasn't worked out at all. His BA is a bit higher thus far this year at .263, but like you said, his HRs have mysteriously morphed into doubles with only 2 dingers in 175 ABs and his defense has been very poor at 3rd and absolutely deplorable in his limited, and I assume experimental time, at 1st base.

With the great season and improvements recently shown by Lawrie the heir apparent at 3rd, I would think once he comes back from his hand injury after the Allstar break Edwin will be relagated to the bench and only used as an occasional relief at 3rd, spot DH and PH and be lucky if he lasts till the end of the season with the Jays. One can only hope. I've been amazed at how bad his D has been this year. It's like once in a decade a team winds up with defensive short comings by a player like him.

....As for EE, at some point (soon, one imagines) the organization is going to have to concede that this just ain't working out....

The only thing that might be delaying this moment is the evidence that EE hits much better as a DH than as a 3B or 1B.  He's still posting a .928 OPS as a DH, compared to .552 as a 1B and .505 as a 3B.  This fits with the theory that EE allows his defensive woes to mess with his mind and distract him from hitting.  He was originally signed as a DH this year, so the Jays might want to give him a bit more time to see if he can maintain the good numbers as a DH.  In the past three weeks, he has been hitting almost exclusively as a DH, and his numbers have been much better.  He has dragged himself up from a .590 OPS to a .684 OPS.  So the Jays might want to see if this continues.   On the other hand, his 0-for-5 last night against the Orioles is perhaps a sign that even this little DH-aided run might be ending.  If that's true, he won't be kept around much longer.

China Fan, my understanding is that it's the league that delays approving the over-slot deals. There's no reason for it. If I'm Boras, that might be the target of my next lawsuit, as it delays the start of earning a salary. The teams want the players playing, the players want to play and earn money. The league doesn't like the over-slot deals.

And there's one more important point about Encarnacion:  who else would be a better choice for DH at this point in a rebuilding season?  Rivera is actually hitting worse than Encarnacion, so there's no point in replacing EE with Rivera.  Obviously the other bench players are even worse.  And would you want to put Thames or Loewen or Cooper at the DH position for the rest of this season, thereby preventing them from gaining valuable experience in their defensive roles?  Sure, it's possible (even probable) that Thames will hit better than Encarnacion for the rest of this season.  But that would prevent Thames from getting any experience at LF, where he surely needs the work.  Thames might get the occasional spot start instead of Patterson, but basically he would be the DH and he would not be getting the LF experience that he needs.

If you want, you can argue that Thames has a better future than Patterson and therefore Thames should be playing LF instead of Patterson.  But that's nothing to do with the issue of what to do with Encarnacion.

Alternatively you could argue that Snider is the LF of the future and therefore Thames has no real future at LF and should be playing at DH instead of Encarnacion this season.  But I doubt very much that the Jays are willing to write off any possibility of Thames being a full-time LF in the future.  Apart from anything else, it would severely damage his trade value, if the Jays want to include Thames in a trade package for a 2B or whatever.

My guess is that the Jays said, well, if we draft you at #21 overall, what would it take to pry you away from your Vandy commitment? The Beede family probably thought it over, considered the fact that the Jays are a good organization with a solid track record of developing pitchers, and said something like, no guarantees, but $3M would likely get it done.

I think a conversation along these lines pretty much has to have taken place, otherwise, why draft someone like Beede at #21 (especially given his letter to scouts saying that he was committed to Vanderbilt)? It sounds like a different situation than that of Josh Bell, who seemed to be saying almost unequivocally that he was college-bound.

The final terms may still need to be ironed out, but it would seem ridiculous for the Jays to go down to the wire and then lowball Beede (say, offering $1.5M), effectively gambling that he goes for a signing bonus well below his asking price instead of opting for college. Beede has a lot of leverage (commit to a good college program), so the Jays must have an idea of what it would realistically take to sign him.
Gerry - Wednesday, June 15 2011 @ 12:45 PM EDT (#236828) #

Baseball America has another article about international signings, this time shortstops.  The first name mentioned is linked to the Blue Jays.

Dawel Lugo has earned wide-ranging praise from scouts as one of the top shortstops in the Dominican Republic, though many of them believe he'll have to move to third base eventually. He should command more than $1 million, with the Blue Jays mentioned most frequently as his possible destination.

The story goes on to say some scouts don't believe he needs to move off shortstop.

Then for the love of GAWD get rid of Patterson, what's the point? at this point. Which is surely what everyone is thinking. And further down the line, what is the point of Davis? Upgrades pleaseeee.  Thames, Snider, Cooper, Lawrie get up here soon, get AB's, and let AA figure this whole thing out for going forward. You couldn't even trade the current 25man roster bunk to Oakland as they'd be no upgrade even for them.

I think 3 million may be a bit low for Beede honestly greenfrog.  There is precendence with this sort of thing and I'm kind of comparing Beede to the Dodgers first round pick of last year Zach Lee.  Lee was heavily committed to LSU to not only play baseball, but also QB for the football team as well.  It took the Dodgers giving him $5.5 million to get him signed last year and I have a feeling Beede is going to be looking more in that range.

A
n early deal with Beede (which I'd guess is true) helps other negotiations, especially with Norris, who was rumoured to want $3.9m. The Jays won't offer him more than Beede, but they could offer $2.5m and let him figure out if it's worth waiting three years for what might be a much more stringent slotting system.

Don't look now, guys, but in the SSS June split Snider is up to a 1.019ops, and in the last 10 that's up to 1.123. He keeps that up for a few weeks (big IF), and he'll be up in here in less than a month IMO. It sure would be nice to see Snider, Lawrie, and Thames all in this lineup with Nix, EE, and one of Patterson/Davis kicked out.

and I know nobody can realistically answer this one.....but Adam Loewen was playing CF last night for the 3rd time this year. I wonder if this is a legit experiment? I wonder if maybe he can play Josh Hamilton-esque CF defense at least? Sure would make Loewen even more interesting than he already is if he can hack it at even a moderately below-average level in CF defensively.

Lugnut Fan: Comparing Lee and Beede isn't exactly appropriate. As a multi-sport athlete, Lee's bonus was spread out over 5 years. There's not way of knowing for sure, but it's believed that the Dodgers would have passed on Lee if this special provision was not available.

I'm very curious to learn what Beede might be demanding. Have there been any non-major league/non-multi sport bonuses given out to draftees over $5MM?

He's still not hitting the ball over the wall (2 HR in 178 AB) and I wonder if that won't hold him back.

Gerry - Wednesday, June 15 2011 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#236853) #

For Travis snider his at-bats have been getting better, as least from the box scores.  Let's look at yesterday:

1st AB - Travis Snider triples (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Willy Taveras

First, he must have hit the ball hard, the ball either went over Taveras's head or it went into the corner or to right centre but in any event it was hit hard.  Secondly the ballwas hit in the air and not on the ground.  Good at-bat

2nd AB - Travis Snider flies out to center fielder Dexter Fowler.

We dont know how hard the ball was hit but it was a weak fly ball they usually say soft fly ball so I would assume Travis hit it reasonably well, he just got under it and skied it.  Average AB

3rd AB - Travis Snider singles on a line drive to center fielder Dexter Fowler

Line drive - excellent at-bat.

4th AB - Travis Snider doubles (16) on a ground ball to center fielder Dexter Fowler

The first look says a ground ball is not good.  But he doubled off the ground ball which implies that it was hit hard, Fowler is no slouch in centre field and to get a double on a ground ball suggests it was hit hard into a gap.  Good at-bat.

When Travis first went down he was grounding out a lot, and many of his hits were ground balls through gaps in the infield.  Over the past few days he appears to be hitting the ball harder, and hitting it in the air, and that bodes well.

I don't expect to see him up here anytime soon, changes to swings take time to ingrain, but I am seeing signs of progress.

I also assume the Jays are targetting late July for Snider, Thames, etc. to come up once they trade or release the non-returners for 2012.

on McGuire/Jackson - I suspect that if they have been told, the official move won't happen until after they get the chance to participate in the FSL allstar game

on Patterson - the main reason he's here (apart from being a LH bat) is that he's the only legit reserve CF. Which might be contributing to what they are trying with Loewen. Every time I start looking at the roster and thinking "how can we clear the filler and bring on the kids" i run into that problem - if i ditch Patterson, who plays CF if David goes down?

I see no problem with dropping Patterson.  In an emergency, Bautista can play CF and we just call up Maestro (or Loewen apparently) when the problem presents itself.

Hey, it looks like I'm reading a bit much into twitter these days.  More likely that JJ and McGuire are heading for new haircuts.

Worth noticing: McGuire's regular turn falls on Saturday which is the day the F-Cats would have to find a starter out of the 'pen.

BUT it's the same day as the FSL all star game so it likely means nothing.

The Fisher Cats have scheduled Chad Beck to start on Saturday.

Ramon Vazquez is starting at SS for Las Vegas tonight. I am not sure what that means for the weekend, John McDonald is due to come off the DL and Mike McCoy might be headed back to LV. Will they have too many players?

so Snider was playing CF tonight, which tells me that Loewen is no more of a CF than Snider is.

p.s. Snider is up to an .878ops now

Snider and Thames are on a roll.  Get 'em out of Vegas before their luck turns!
