Travis Snider's hot streak continues. Is he ready to be called back up? All this, and more, in today's Minor League Update

Colorado Springs 6 at Las Vegas 12

It was 9-3 Las Vegas by the end of the 4th, and the 51s lead was never in Jeopardy! after that. Brad Mills was simply okay, which for the PCL is pretty good. He went seven, and allowed 4 of the 6 Colorado Springs runs, on six hits and two walks. He also struck out six. Clint Everts gave up the other two runs, and Wil Ledezma got the last four outs. Meanwhile on offense it was the Travis Snider show. Lunchbox went 4 for 4 with 9 total bases - 3 doubles and a single, plus a walk. He also played centre field, which must have been quite an adventure. His slash line is now up to a respectable .330/.400/.478, in 200 PA. His performance has improved recently, but there are still warning signs - he has 19 doubles and only 2 home runs, he is hitting close to .400 on balls in play, and his isolated power is about the worst it's been in any stint other than the 2011 MLB campaign. So, I don't know if he has been miraculously fixed, but I would say "cautious" is the operative word in "cautious optimism" about Snider. Other batting stars: Eric Thames was a homer shy of the cycle, Kevin Howard had 3 singles, while Ramon Vazquez and David Cooper has 2 apiece. Adam Loewen has a solitary single but threw a guy out at the plate.

New Hampshire 0 at Akron 3

Henderson Alavarez was good in this one, but not good enough to make up for the slumbering Cats bats. Alvarez took the loss despite giving up 2 runs, (1 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks, though he struck out none, getting all 20 of his outs in play (13 gb/7 fb). New Hampshire had as many hits as Akron - seven - but couldn't string anything together. Callix Crabbe had 2 singles and a double, while Adeiny Hechavarria singled twice but was caught stealing.

Clearwater 5 at Dunedin 6

Clearwater scored 4 in the second and Dunedin matched that total in the sixth, so the game came down to trading one spots, with Dunedin coming out ahead 2-1 in that regard. John Talley and Brad McElroy did their part, both belting solo shots, with McElroy earning Player of the Game honours by also cashing two with a double. A rehabbing Johnny Mac singled in four trips; Brian Van Kirk, Kevin Ahrens and Ivan Contreras also singled. AJ Jiminez continued his fine season by also singling, twice. Ryan Shopshire got the start in this one, continuing his poor run in high A ball, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in 3.1 innings without striking out a batter. Frank Gailey did yeoman's work in relief, recording one more out than Shopshire while allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, with 1 BB and 4 Ks. Wes Etheridge pitched a perfect 2 innings with 2 K's for the save, his 22nd.

South Bend 5 at Lansing 2

All the scoring happened in the last 3 innings in this one, but South Bend did more of it. Sean Nolin righted the ship after a few shaky performances, pitching a scoreless 6 innings. More to the point, he allowed a solitary single and but one walk, while striking out 7. I assume he was lifted for pitch count related reasons - this matched his longest start of the year. The pen was not as good, however, as Marcus Walden got lit up for 4 runs in retiring 5 batters. The Luggies could muster on five singles - Kevin Nolan, Nolan again, Carlos Perez, Michael Crouse, and K.C. Hobson.

DSL Blue Jays 6 at DSL Angels 2

Cesar "Don't Call Me Aaron" Sanchez picked up his first win in the DSL, his 2 hits and 2 walks allowed leading to 1 run in 5 innings. He also struck out 4. Emilio Guerrero drove in 4 with a single and a double, and Maydawin de la Cruz also picked up 2 hits.

3 Stars!

3rd Star! Eric Thames - 3/4, BB, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI

2nd Star! Sean Nolin - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

1st Star! Travis Snider - 4/4, BB, 3 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

Snider's new swing seems to be working but I would give it another week in Vegas to lock it in before calling him up.

I might give it even longer. If they've really changed something fundamental about Snider's swing, it needs to become habit, and that takes a long time. If he gets called up he might just go right back to his early season ways.

I must've missed it, but when and why did Snider get tabbed "Lunchbox"?
Mike Green - Thursday, June 16 2011 @ 11:58 AM EDT (#236870) #
Gerry referred yesterday to the game recap from milb.com  for more information about Snider's base hits.  You can also look at Gameday and using the field controls get the location of the home hits.  If you cursor over the dots, you'll get whose hit was which.  So, for instance, Thames' triple last night was off the centerfield wall 433 feet away.  Snider's single (on which he got thrown out at second) was off the left-field wall.

The 51s lead the league in doubles, but have a below average home run total.  The park appears to tend that way.  So, if you are making translations between Las Vegas and Toronto, you can expect HR totals to decline modestly, doubles totals and batting averages to go down a lot.  Hence, Arencibia is basically doing what one might have expected (albeit with somewhat better plate discipline).

Snider has been Lunchbox since at least last season. One of the clips they'd play at the RC had players saying what their nicknames were. On Twitter he is Lunchboxhero45. He looks like a kid and has a legendary appetite.

Zach Stewart is throwing strikes (5 IP, 55 pitches, 36 strikes). Yes it's the Orioles. Yes the strike zone seems a little bit wide. But still, this is something a viewer could get used to.

And he doesn't futz around between pitches. The game moves along nicely.

Snider was given an extra day off about a week ago, before a scheduled day off. Since then he is 17-for-29, with six 2B, a 3B and a HR. He's driving the ball hard to LF and CF, which I would take as a better sign than a few more HRs from a lot of balls arced to right through the thin air. His single last night was off the LF wall; he was thrown out at 2B on a close play. He made a great diving catch in CF that had the play-by-play guy calling him Travis Griffey. I've always thought of Travis as a guy who is wound up pretty tight and gets down on himself. The last couple weeks in Toronto he was so defensive at the plate he looked like he was under siege. There's no hurry for him to return and his production vs. PCL LHP (.381 SLP, .734 OPS, 4BB, 18K in 63 AB) suggests there is still work to be done. I'd vote for him staying in Vegas another month, not only to consolidate specific swing changes but also to consolidate the confidence that comes from sustained success.

And maybe work on mental aspects.

Stewart's command was okay-not-great, I thought, but we weren't demanding much today. He was changing speeds well. With his stuff, okay command should get him safely above replacement level.

Daniel Webb is now on the DL in Lansing. They are short of starting pitchers at the worst time, the first half season is close to ending.
Mike Green - Thursday, June 16 2011 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#236883) #
Anthony Gose is back in the lineup again tonight. He reached base on catcher's interference in his first PA; that has happened 4 or 5 times this year. I guess he's quite far back in the box.

Fuenmayor and Jones have both been transferred to Bluefield from Lansing.
DaveB - Thursday, June 16 2011 @ 08:21 PM EDT (#236885) #
A good DSL debut today for Jairo Labourt, the big DR lefty the Jays signed for $350,000 in January; 3IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K. Since the signing, Labourt has turned 17 (second youngest player on the roster); put on 20 pounds (listed at 6-4, 204); and added a 'T' to his surname.

Fuenmayor and Jones have both been transferred to Bluefield from Lansing.

Correction: Vancouver, not Bluefield.

Being short a starter really hurt Lansing tonight. Egan smith started on three days rest and got WAXED.

Sam Strickland, who'd spot starter last weekend came in in the 7th and got torched in the 8th.

Listch is supposed to start Saturday but someone will have to be added, you'd think, for tomorrow night or else they will have to have a "group start"

Re: the Lunchbox nickname:
Snider was asked this at some point on twitter and replied that it has been his nickname since he was a freshman in high school as recognition for "the way [he] dominated food"

Hmmm, that is interesting Tamra.  I see them listed on the Vancouver roster as well, but the official roster transaction said they were transferred to Bluefield.

Initial Bluefield roster released.
Gerry - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 10:30 AM EDT (#236905) #
From that story it looks like Gustavo Pierre has been sent down to Bluefield.
Mike Green - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 10:35 AM EDT (#236906) #
And here's the exhortation to Bluefield fans to come out to support the club at $4 per ticket. The Rays' Appy League affiliate is ten miles away from Bluefield in Princeton, and it would be fun to see a preview of some of the big-league matchups of 2015.  Bluefield is about 5 hours drive from Pittsburgh.  Hmm...
ayjackson - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 11:39 AM EDT (#236911) #
Aaron Sanchez, Noah Syndergaard, Mitchell Taylor, Jose Vargas and Myles Jaye looks like an interesting starting rotation, if that's how it plays out.

Have I missed where Griffin Murphy has been assigned?  GCL?
Mike Green - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 12:15 PM EDT (#236914) #
Griffin Murphy is on the Bluefield roster according to milb.com. That may or may not be accurate.

that Bluefield article describes Hawkins as an outfielder...

These are the guys from last years draft, in order of selection, that i don't see on any official roster yet:

G. Murphy - Injured? surely he's not going to go GCL?
S. Dyson - DL
D. Thon - presumably DL
B. Mims - GCL?
Z. Adams - GCL?
D. Pompey - GCL?
A. Gomez - GCL?
R.Melendez - seems old for GCL
J. Johnson - ditto
A. Kelly - GCL?
T. Powell - seems old for GCL
S. Conner - GCL?

Gomez, Pompey, and Mims are listed on the GCL roster but it doesn't reflect the Bluefield roster so it's of limited value.

Other names from last year noteably absent are:

A. Cardona - should be GCL of course
D. Estrada
Z. Outman - hurt and indicates he's associated with Vancouver
S. Nessy & A. Rodriguez - both catchers likely GCL

If we take that, and the unassigned FA signings and try to put together a GCL roster it might look like this:

SP: Musgrove, Cardona, Estrada, Adams, Kelly, Johnson, Powell (Eliopoulos, Robson)
RP: Mella, Valdez, Pina, Moreno, Jensen, Roman, Thompson

C - Nessy, Rodriguez, Mahler
1B - (Anderson)
2B - Mims, Bidos
SS - Conner, Frias (Lopes, Atkinson)
3B - (Dean)
OF - Pompey, Gomez, Melendez (Smith, Jr)

DL - Murphy, Thon, Dyson (Stilson)

Pending further signings, noted by parenthesis, and acknowledging that some of the "tough signs (particularly Dean and Lopes) probably wouldn't be signed in time to play anyway.

As always, 90% speculation.

TamRa - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 08:28 PM EDT (#236934) #
Powell is indeed on the Lansing roster now, and Casey Lawrence had to return so they'd have a starter tonight. He's not having his best night (probably not surprising given the short notice and travel) as the Lugs fight for the first half title (they were 1.5 back coming into tonight with three before the break)

Marc Hulet - Friday, June 17 2011 @ 09:49 PM EDT (#236935) #
I know Dalton Pompey has been dealing with a hand injury... not sure how serious it is.

Kenny Wilson in Dunedin had labrum surgery on his left shoulder so he's probably done for the year... which is why Chris Hawkins has been helping out there.

John Lott in the National Post on June 21  reported that when Travis Snider visited a neurologist, Snider was symptom-free.  While Snider still faces a series of tests, his recovery time is expected to be minimal.  PShew (back of hand sweeping sweat from forehead)
