There was a tie game after nine innings which will be completed today.  There was an awful pitching performance, a good pitching performance, a grand slam, a victory in our home and native land, an All-Star Game that featured a Canadian All-Star, a promising start by one of the Jays prominent international signees and a game that had similarities to the parent club's Tuesday night.  It was a 3-4 night on the farm with one game pending.

Reno 13 Las Vegas 6

Reno, NV
- The 51s scored single runs in the third, sixth and ninth and scored three in the eighth.  The only problem was the Diamondbacks affiliate scored in every inning except for the seventh and the ninth.  Of course, they were the home team so that's a technicality!

Batting
- Chris Woodward (3-5) had a double and an RBI and Adam Loewen (2-5) smoked a solo home run to supply half of the 51s 10 hits.  Ramon Vazquez (1-3) was on base three times thanks to a pair of walks.  Ryan Shealy (1-4) doubled and drove in two runs, Eric Thames (1-4) doubled and walked and David Cooper (1-5) doubled and knocked home a run.  Brian Jeroloman (1-4) had no walks so the BJBBM is stuck at 20.  Dan Perales (0-2) had a sacrifice fly RBI and a walk.  Manny Mayorson (0-4) had a base on balls.

Running - No steals or mishaps on the basepaths.

Pitching - It was a rough night at the office for lefty Brad MillsStrasburg Canada was rocked for nine runs (seven earned) on 14 hits (including three home runs) in four innings.  He struck out two and walked one while six of his nine outs in play were on the ground.  Lefty Rommie Lewis was also beat around to the tune of three runs on three hits and two walks in two innings.  He struck out three and also induced three groundball outs.  Winston Abreu overcame a hit and a walk for a shutout frame that included one K.  Jason Lane pulled a Mike McCoy and pitched the ninth to save the 51s bullpen from further wear and tear.  He gave up one run on one hit.

Defence - Woodward had a clank at third.  Loewen gunned down a runner at the plate.  Jeroloman was 0-for-1 trying to nail basestealers with Mills on the hill.  Vazquez started and turned a 6-3 double play.

New Hampshire 1 Altoona 0

Manchester, NH - The only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Batting
- Callix Crabbe (1-3) doubled home the only run and had exactly 50% of New Hampshire's hits.  The other base knock came from Moises Sierra (1-3).  Ricardo Nanita (0-2), Craig Stansberry (0-2) and John Tolisano (0-2) all drew a base on balls.  Adeiny Hechavarria (0-4), Anthony Gose (0-3), Mike McDade (0-3) and Travis d'Arnaud (0-3) have seen better days at the dish, especially d'Arnaud as he struck out three times.

Running - Nanita and Stansberry each stole a base.

Pitching - One walk and two hits.  That's all Henderson Alvarez allowed over seven shutout innings to earn the victory.  He struck out five and got eight groundball outs to improve to 4-2.  Lefty Evan Crawford walked one and struck out one in a shutout eighth for the hold.  Bobby Korecky gave up a pair of hits but struck out a pair to nail down his fourth save.

Defence - A pickoff throw from Crawford went horribly awry.

Dunedin 6 Brevard County 5

Dunedin, FL - Four runs in the fourth, one in the second and one in the fourth were enough for Dunedin to hold off the Brewers affiliate, who scored twice in the fourth and sixth and once in the seventh.

Batting - Three D-Jays got aboard three times.  The "Sultan of Swat" was Brian Van Kirk (1-2), who hit a grand slam to put the D-Jays in flight in the first inning and drew a pair of walks.  Ryan Schimpf (2-3) doubled twice and walked once while driving in a pair of runs.  Chris Hopkins (3-4) was on base all three times by hitting his way on, including a double.  Kevin Ahrens (1-4) had the other Dunedin hit.  Justin Jackson (0-4) got a base on balls as did Brad Glenn (0-3), Jon Talley (0-3) and Joe Bowen (0-3).  Sean Ochinko (0-4) got nada in the hit and walk column.

Running - Hopkins was thrown out for trying to steal second.

Pitching - Three D-Jays relievers struck out three batters apieceStarter Ryan Shopshire gave up two runs in three innings on four hits and four walks.  He struck out only one batter and threw a pitch so wild it was ruled a wild pitch.  Funky, huh?  Lefty Aaron Loup was given credit for the win as he also allowed a couple of runs over three innings.  He gave up a home run among his five hits and issued a walk but he racked up 3 Ks.  Lefty Matt Wright permitted a solo homer and a walk in 1 2/3 innings but also collected three strikeouts to get the hold.  Wes Etheridge notched his 24th save with 1 1/3 perfect frames with 3 Ks to help the Dunedin strikeout total reach double digits.

Defence - Schimpf chucked one away at second.  Bowen was 0-for-4 trying to nail base stealers, three with Shopshire on the hill and once with Loup on the mound.  Hopkins threw out a runner at third from center field.

Midwest League All-Star Game:  Mid-West 8 Mid-East 3

Davenport, IA - Jacob Marisnick (1-4), Michael Crouse (1-4) and North York's Marcus Knecht (0-2) represented the Lansing Lugnuts on the losing East squad.  Crouse had the lone extra-base hit for the East and scored a run but struck out three times.  On the pitching side, Steven Turnbull gave up a hit and struck out a pair in a shutout ninth.

Vancouver 4 Yakima 1

Vancouver, BC
- It's nice to write those words as the game location!  The Diamondbacks affiliate drew first blood in the fourth but the Canadians rallied with two runs in the fourth and two in the seventh for the victory.

Batting
- Leadoff man Jonathan Jones (3-4) and number two hitter Jonathon Berti (2-3) were on base three times each with Berti drawing a walk.  Roan Salas (2-4) hit a solo home run and Eli Boike (2-4) also had a multi-hit game.  Shane Opitz (1-4) and Luis Hurtado (1-3) each plated home a run and Yeico Aponte (1-4) reached the hit column.  Nicholas Baligod (0-3) heard ball four once but all Balbino Fuenmayor (0-4) heard was strike three as he collected the golden sombrero.

Running - Jones stole third, Berti stole second but Boike was caught trying to steal second.

Pitching - Taylor Cole yielded a run in 3 1/3 innings on two hits and a walk.  He threw a pitch deemed to be of wildness by the official scorer but he struck out a batter and six of his seven outs in play stayed on land.  Alesone Escalante allowed an inherited run to score but did pitch 3 2/3 shutout innings to get the victory.  He allowed two hits and plunked a batter but he struck out two and got four groundball outs.  Bryan Longpre pitched a clean eighth inning for the hold.  Lefty Alex Pepe got the save as he allowed one hit while striking out a batter in a scoreless ninth.

Defence - Hurtado threw out a runner at second with Cole on the mound.

Bluefield 5 Elizabethton 5 (Suspended - 9 Innings) - Game will be completed today.

Elizabethton, TN - Bluefield scored three times in the first and added two more in the seventh for a 5-1 lead before the Twins rallied late to send this one into overtime.

Highlights - Gustavo Pierre and Yudelmis Hernandez each went deep and Luis Munoz singled and drove in a pair of runs.  On the mound, Noah Syndergaard struck out eight in four innings.  He scattered four hits and a walk and three of his four outs in play were on the ground.

GCL Pirates 10 GCL Blue Jays 7

Bradenton, FL - The Jays clustered their runs in innings three through six with two runs in every frame save for the fifth.  The Bucs scored a touchdown in the fourth, kicked the extra point in the fifth and snapped a 7-7 tie with a field goal in the eighth.

Batting - Santiago Nessy (3-5) connected for a home run, the G-Jays only extra-base hit, and picked up three RBI.  Nico Taylor (2-4) was the on-base leader by also collecting a pair of walks.  Jorge Veda-Rosado (1-4) also drew two bases on balls.  Angel Gomez (0-1) had a sacrifice fly and Dalton Pompey (1-2) pinch-hit for Gomez and remained in center field.  Both Gomez and Pompey were hit by pitches.  Dickie Thon Jr. (1-2) had a walk and an RBI while Chris Peters (0-2) came in for Thon at short.  Kevin Patterson (1-4) had a walk and a run batted in.  Sony Javier (1-5) had the other G-Jays hit.  Seth Connor (0-4) and Eric Arce (0-3) were hitless but Arce was plunked twice.

Running - The G-Jays were 5-for-5 in steal attempts.  Gomez stole second and third, Taylor stole third, Javier and Conner stole second.

Pitching - Adonis Cardona gave up just one hit and plunked a batter in three shutout innings and struck out four.  Lefty Zak Adams endured the inning from hell as he gave up seven runs on five hits and two walks while throwing two wild pitches.  He did strike out one but his ERA is now an unsightly 63.00.  Alex Ramirez stranded an inherited runner and rung up a couple of Ks in his shutout inning of work.  Matt Fields supplied two scoreless innings and struck out a batter.  Brian Slover took the loss as he was burned for three runs in 2/3 of an inning.  He surrendered three hits and a walk while striking out one.  Luis Mendez retired the last hitter of the ninth to finish up.

Defence - Thon botched one at short.

DSL Braves 2 DSL Blue Jays 1

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
- Like the parent club, the Dom-Jays scored first but still wound up losing.  They scored their lone run in the second but the Braves scored twice in the ninth to pull out the victory.

Batting - John Delgado (2-3) accounted for 50% of the Jays hit total and knocked in the only run.  Emilio Guerrero (1-4) and Cesar Barazarte (1-4) each had a double.  Jonathan Pumarol (0-2) drew a couple of walks while Angel Rojas (0-3) and Luis Martin (0-2) had base on balls.   Mauricio Nagahashi (0-4), Alvaro Blanco (0-3), Gabriel Quintana (0-2) and Tonguar Perez (0-1) were a combined 0-for-10.

Running - Rojas was caught stealing second and Quintana was picked off first.

Pitching
- Ericdavis Marquez was stellar, scattering four hits over six shutout innings with six Ks and no walks.  He also induced nine groundball outs.  Manuel Lopez suffered the loss as he was burned for two unearned runs over three innings.  He allowed three hits, struck out three and did not walk anyone.

Defence - Rojas threw one away at short and Blanco booted one at second that resulted in the winning run cross the plate in the ninth.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Ericdavis Marquez, DSL Blue Jays  Note - Not actually Ericdavis Marquez but this will have to do!

2.  Brian Van Kirk, Dunedin

1.  Henderson Alvarez, New Hampshire

The salary of the minor league crew ought to be doubled immediately to reflect the increased load...Speaking of which, there was a GCL game yesterday.  Cardona was pretty impressive.

I like the compliment paid to Marisnick and Jiminez in their respective All-Star appearances - both being used in the meat of the order, Marisnick at #3 and Jiminez at #4. Shows the kind of esteem they're held in in their leagues, IMO.

Seriously, NewHamp might have the greatest All-Names roster in the history of the great game.
Callix Crabbe? Moises Sierra? Ricardo Nanita? Adeiny Hechavarria? Travis d'Arnaud? How utterly and completely awesome!

@Mike, good suggestion. I have just officially approved a ninety-four percent pay increase for all of them. That should keep them happy?

Speaking of names, if Van Kirk is named team captain, does this mean he should be referred to as Captain Van Kirk?

Speaking of which, there was a GCL game yesterday.

Now included in today's update.  Thanks!

Griffin Murphy had a solid debut today. 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K.  Strong early showings from last year's draftee rookies, and I imagine we may see Sanchez tonight in Bluefield.

Sanchez is scheduled to start the home opener, which is Friday I believe.
Kelekin - Wednesday, June 22 2011 @ 01:52 PM EDT (#237243) #
That's surprising.  I would've imagined he'd have his turn after, or even prior to Syndergaard.

Pitching a home opener is an honour, it's a big deal to the player.  I think that's why they split Syndergaard and Sanchez that way, one the opener, one the home opener.

Big League club can't buy a run, meanwhile the AAA squad is up 11-1 in the 3rd right now, led by Thames (3/3, 2rbi).

hmm.

Deck McGuire was hit by a line drive tonight and left the game.

Dustin Antolin replaced him for his first official appearance of 2011. Antolin had TJ surgery in 2010.

I am happy to see Dickie Thon in the line-up. Does this mean his health concerns are in the rear view mirror? Any information about his condition?
dan gordon - Wednesday, June 22 2011 @ 11:01 PM EDT (#237284) #
Yes, it's good to see Thon playing.  I noticed that they played him for about half the game in his first 2 starts, and then he played a full game today.  Perhaps stamina was a question mark, and they did indicate it was a blood disorder, so perhaps some type of anemia was the problem.  The timeline would be about right.  In any event, the specifics of his condition don't matter - what matters is that he is back and playing.  Good luck to him.
