Raining hits for Las Vegas, Rain delays in New Hampshire, Rain out in Dunedin, Rain make up for Lansing.

Las Vegas 11  Tuscon 1

As Casey Casem would say, the hits just kept on comin’ as the 51s backed up 1 run pitching with 17 hits, including 3 homers from Moises(the Masher) Sierra (3 for 5, 5 RBIs).  Winning pitcher, Bill Murphy (1-2) went 6.0 innings allowing Tuscon’s only run on an solo HR in the 1st inning.  Murphy settled down, limiting the Padres to just 2 more hits in his 6.0 IP.  Clint Everts came on with some 3 hit work in 3 IP, securing the save, his first of the year.  Adeiny Hechavarria booted one, his 9th error of the year.

Hechavarria redeemed himself, going 2 for 4, including a double and 3 RBIs.  Everyone hit for the 51s except Chris Woodward.  Red hot Anthony Gose (4 for 5, 2B, RBI) scored 4 and batted in a run, going 4 for 5, including a double.  Adam Lind (3 for 3, RBI) and Travis d’Arnaud (0 for 4, RBI) were the other run producers.  Yan Gomes (2 for 4, 2 2B) scored once and had a pair of doubles. Jonathan Diaz (2 for 5) scored twice and had a pair of singles.

New Hampshire 2  Trenton 2  (suspended after 8.5 innings)

The Fisher Cats managed only 5 hits, but they were fortunate to have the score knotted after 8 innings due to Brett Cecil’s hit parade start, allowing 10 hits, 2 earned runs and striking out 5 in 5.2 IP. Aaron Loop came on with 1.1 innings of relief, striking out 3.   Ryan Goins (2 for 3, 3B, 2 RBIs), Brian Van Kirk (1 for 4), Brian Bocock (1 for 4) and Brian Jeroloman (1 for 4) provide the light lumber for New Hampshire.  Mike McDade suffered a fielding error.

The game will be continued Saturday night prior to the regularly scheduled game in the lair of the baby evil empire.

Dunedin v Charlotte  (Postponed – Rain)

The D-Jays and Stone Crabs fell victim to Florida’s summer weather pattern as thunderstorms welled up in south central Florida and moved to the Gulf coast in what the locals call a trash moving rain.

In other news, six Dunedin Blue Jays (3 pitchers and 3 position players) were named to the Florida State League north all star squad for the 51st All Star Game scheduled for June 16th in Port Charlotte.  Pitchers named were Sean Nolin, Egan Smith and Danny Barnes.  Position players named were shortstop Kevin Nolan, first baseman Jon Talley and second baseman Ryan Schimpf.  See story (here).

Lansing 0  Bowling Green 1  (Continuation of rain delayed Thursday game)

In a 10 inning continuation of a rain delayed game from Thursday, the Luggies lost a heartbreaker when reliever Brandon Berl (L 2-3)  suffered a fielding error by Markus Brisker (3) and a runner made it on base.  Berl sealed the deal with a throwing error himself on a sacrifice bunt, allowing the winning run to score for Bowling Green.

Starter Justin Nicolino and Aaron Sanchez pitched a combined total of 8 IP, allowing 6 hits and striking out 5.  Lansing bats could only muster 4 hits in the contest, two from Andy Burns – a single and a double. K.C. Hobson and Gustavo Pier each scratched up a single in the Luggies’ 10 scoreless innings.

Lansing 1  Bowling Green 5  (7 inning nightcap)

Lansing continued their paltry hitting in the shortened nightcap behind starter (and finisher) Jessie Hernandez who went the distance allowing 5 runs on 10 hits (including an HR) and striking out 6.  Gustavo Piere had a fielding error, his first of the year.

The Luggies did have 5 hits on the evening, but could only muster a single run on 2 out consecutive doubles by Kenny Wilson (1 for 4) and Chris Hawkins (1 for 3, RBI).  Hawkins was picked off second to end the inning and the threat.  Kevin Pillar (2 for 3, 2B, BB) had Lansing’s only multi-hit game while Andy Burns (1 for 3, 2B) added a double.

Stars

Third Star            Adeiny Hechavarria – 2 for 4, 2B, 3 RBIs

Second Star        Anthony Gose – 4 for 4, 4 R, 2B, RBI

First Star              Moises (the Masher) Sierra -3 for 5, 3 R, 3 HRs, 5 RBIs

Gose had a decent day, but the 4-5 flatters him.  Four ground balls and a strikeout would give him a 2-5 or a 1-5 most days.  A couple of days ago, the line was deceptively so-so when he actually had a very good day.  Best to keep on an eye on the overall seasonal line.  He's not hitting homers.  He is drawing walks.  He is striking out over once per game, although the rate has been dropping.

Friday night's Vegas box score is one of the more compelling of the entire season. Whether Gose was fortunate or not 4/5 kinda jumps out at you. Sierra's power display gives a person pause. And at some point one starts to wonder if Adam Lind is gonna go all Edward Encarnacion on us. Not only is he hitting and hitting for power, he is walking. And Yan Gomes sure looks like a hitter. I suspect the Tuscon pitching wasn't featuring Johan Santana.
With David Cooper doing well at the Major League Level, AA is left with some very interesting decisions to make.

Gose in LF, Sierra in CF, Thames in RF? Something is brewing.

Here is Farrell's answer on the 51's OF alignment last night:

Farrell on Vegas OF last night of Gose in LF, Sierra in CF, Thames in RF: "to get guys exposed to different areas." #BlueJays

Good point, 92-93.  Gose in left-field is obviously not the ideal place for him, but Rasmus and Bautista have seniority.

Congrats to the unheralded players of Dunedin for being selected All Stars!
finch - Saturday, June 02 2012 @ 06:22 PM EDT (#257599) #

Slightly off topic here but I would go absolutely gaga if the Jays could land the following players:

17. Lance McCullers, RHP, Jesuit HS (FL)

22. David Dahl, OF, Oak Mountain HS (AL)

50. Nick Williams, OF, Ball HS (TX)

58. Keon Barnum, 1B, King HS (FL)

60. Mitchell Traver, Houston Christian HS (TX)

MuCullers is an absolutely beast on the mound. There’s some signability issues with him as he’s represented by Boras. Dahl is Trout comps while Williams has a high ceiling and is compared to Ken Griffey, though those are lofty comps. Barnum has some serious power potential and Traver is a hard throwing 6’7” pitcher.

This draft will be interesting to keep track of with all the rules. One thing I’m confident in is that AA and his scouts will be best prepared.

The juggernaut 51's offence, with the just added Vlad Guerrero, gets a real test tonight when they face Trevor Bauer and the Reno Aces.
dan gordon - Sunday, June 03 2012 @ 12:11 AM EDT (#257608) #

Reno leads 4-3 after 6.  Considering it's Bauer, they're doing pretty well, with 9 hits and 2 walks.  Sierra is 3 for 3, Hechavarria and Thames have 2 hits, Lind and D'Arnaud have 1.  Vladdy (batting 3rd in the order) is 0 for 3, as are Gose and Gomes.

Sportsnet reports tonight that Snider should be back in the Vegas lineup very soon.
