The final short season rosters were announced today.  There are not many surprises.  A lot of the 2011 draftees head to Bluefield while the younger 2012 draftees and most of the recent Latino signed players stay in the GCL.  Bluefield's line-up should include five 19 year olds, Dwight Smith, Jacob Anderson, Christian Lopes, Santiago Nessy and Matt Dean as well as 20 year old Dickie Thon Jr.  The pitching line up includes Daniel Norris, Kevin Comer, Joe Musgrove, Jeremy Gabryszwski and Roberto Osuna.

The GCL roster includes DJ Davis, Anthony Alford, Dawel Lugo, Gabriel Cenas, Jairo Labourt and Alberto Tirado.  Mark Biggs stays in the GSL as does Adonys Cardona whio has been injured.

This is going to be a very exciting short-season looking at those rosters.

Thanks Gerry. I guess a lot of the starters will go 3 innings to open the season.
What ever is best for the kids.

I don't like the too cautious approach the Jays are taking with the prospects over the last couple of years, starting them up at the very lowest levels and moving them up very slowly. Maybe they thought they were too aggressive with Justin Jackson and Kevin Ahrens, and think that ruined their development.

Anybody know someone in Bluefield?  That club looks to be a powerhouse, and it would be nice to have some local reports on the many interesting players there.

That GCL outfield is crowded.  Who ends up starting? You've got Davis and Alford as very high draftees and Becerra and Gonzalez as high-profile IFA signings.  Loveless is an interesting prospect as well.

The Adonys Cardona surprises me a bit. As did Seth Conner, until I realized they moved him to catcher, which is something they talked about immediately after signing him. And the move back to catcher for Arce is also a surprise but a smart move - maximizing defensive value with both players.

I am a fan of the assignments.

From my personal assessment, there are 2 interesting prospects to watch in Vancouver, 14 in Bluefield and 16 in the Gulf Coast League. Good spread in the bottom two clubs; not the best talent for the west coast.

Those are exciting teams. Really interested to watch Alford and Davis in the GCL.

I wonder if the Cardona assignment was dictated by his injury and whether he will be in Bluefield in short order if he shows no ill effects. He was pretty successful if inconsistent in the GCL last year as a 17 year old.

Just letting everyone know that I've accepted my loonie bonus and am reporting to Vancouver.  Apparently I'm age appropriate.  Give or take 30 years,

It's the under-20s in Bluefield who most interest me: Norris, Osuna, Lopes, Dean, Smith and Anderson.

Is Eric Arce being converted to catcher?

Color me confused. I don't know what they're doing with Seth Conner. Hits well last year, Hits well in spring training, gets assigned to the GCL again.

I understand that the short season teams are stacked and prospects like Matt Dean take precedent but I don't see anyone of significance blocking his path in Vancouver. His extended stats indicate that he would be one of the stronger offensive players on that team.

To add to that last comment, he's also of age to be playing in the college heavy northwest league.

I'm guessing since Alford will depart for football before the end of the season, that he will play early and one of the Latin guys will sit and once he leaves then both the Latin guys get regular time.

Also - who plays 1B in the GCL?
TamRa - Saturday, June 16 2012 @ 12:20 AM EDT (#258763) #
here are the guys from last year I still can't account for:

Matt Fields
Bryan Kervin
Eli Boike
Matt Abraham
Myles Duvall
Tyler Powell
Melvin Garcia
Angel Gomez
Jon Valdez
Misual Diaz
Leo Mella
Tim Mahler
Shane Farrell (never actually played but was listed as signed)

Not that any of these are important guys in the scheme of things, but am i to assume they have all been dispatched? Or are there some possible lingering in some disabled limbo?

Melvin Garcia was suspended for 50 games, Farrell had shoulder surgery after he signed.

A look at each player on Bluefield's roster

The implication from that grouping is that they are grooming Conner as a catcher? In that case, holding him back in the GCL would make sense.

Is Conner as catcher a correct assumption, Gerry?
Marc Hulet - Saturday, June 16 2012 @ 07:50 AM EDT (#258772) #
The club told Conner when he signed that they had interest in moving him to catcher as a pro. Arce was a catcher in high school but there weren't many scouts that thought he'd stick there due to his lack of size and limited mobility.
Gerry - Saturday, June 16 2012 @ 08:45 AM EDT (#258775) #
I just copied and pasted the roster that I received from the Jays. Players like Connor and Arce were grouped with the catchers by the Jays. Also DJ DAvis's age being listed as 17, that too was done by the Jays. I am just the messenger here.

Now that the short season teams are starting to play we will see the box scores and that will tell us who gets the reps at catcher.

I know some people are high on Connor but if the Jays put him in the GCL and then if he doesn't get full time at-bats, you can deduce that the Jays are not sold on his major league potential.

D.J. Davis' DOB as listed on his MiLB profile: 7/27/1993

Would make him almost 19 years old.  I sure hope the Jays knew how old this kid was....
