Here comes $165,000,000 worth of fish!

Commissioner Bud says that this deal "represents the exercise of plausible baseball judgment on the part of both Clubs, does not violate any express rule of Major League Baseball," such as public exhibition or unauthorized reproduction. Wait, are there other express rules?

Plausible baseball judgement. The bar to clear is, evidently, not terribly high.

Even if the trade did represent some sort of violation, i would imagine that Selig would see that the damage done to an already damaged miami market pales in comparison to the benefits of re-energizing a toronto market. This is a market which has previously supported 4 million fans for god sakes.

Chuck, I'd love to know what would constitute implausible baseball judgment. Maybe the time I traded four guys named Cliff in fantasy baseball for four guys named Brad? But it was a pretty even trade.

Yes, the judgment regarding the relative merit of the players exchanged considering present and future value was fine. No one got robbed here. It seems Loria has good judgment about short term gains and about how to con (um convince) public officials to hand over gobs of money for a stadium. Perhaps the jays should hire him to handle fundraising for a real baseball only stadium for Toronto? The long term pain of course belongs to the Marlins fans.

It's a cousin to "plausible deniability", if one remembers the Iran-contra affair.  Usage: one GM to the other in trade negotiations- "you and I know that my owner is just after fleecing the fans and citizens of my city, but you've got to throw another hotshot prospect in so that we've got plausible baseball judgment on our side".

I don't know, but I'd bet it has something to do with Alex Rios...

CBC Sports report Miami sent $8.5 million in the trade as well.

So, basically, add one-year of Melky to the trade. Nicely done AA.

J.P. Arencibia may be the most insecure pro athlete ever. His twitter feed is cringe worthy right now.

And I guess John Gibbons is gonna be the Jays new/old manager? Um?

I assume Gibbons is going to unveil a coaching staff of Tosca, Williams and Johnson.

Gold Nick, pure gold.

Wendy Thurm inadvertently points out that AA is truly an evil genius.  In one fell swoop, he enriches his club and reduces the chances of the Rays getting a new stadium...

Heh.  Good point Mike.  What voter in Florida would want to help finance a new park after the latest Marlins sell off?  If I owned the Rays I'd be very, very angry about the Marlins stunt right now.

30 years in that dome starting in 1998, so they cannot move (easily) until after the 2027 season.  15 years down, 15 to go before they can move to Montreal :)
