Richard Urena debuted and the affiliates played .500 plus baseball over the weekend. A general success, though the Nate Pearson wait continues.

Buffalo Bisons

The Bisons split their weekend games. On Saturday the team won in extras and on Sunday the Bisons were felled by a familiar name in these parts in Asher Wojciechowski. Wojciechowski pitched five innings of relief baseball yielding one earned run and earning the win.

Dalton Pompey had a nice weekend. He collected four hits. Dwight Smith Jr. walked three times on Sunday and had four hits and a walk on Saturday. Rowdy Tellez also collected a few hits as he looks to improve on a slow start.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats

New Hampshire chalked up the win on both weekend days. Saturday featured six innings of one-run baseball by Sean Reid-Foley. Hat tip to Diamond in the previous thread for the reporting. Cavan Biggio, Harold Ramirez, and Connor Panas went deep in that one. Cavan Biggio homered again on Sunday and Jon Harris pitched six innings of two-run baseball.

Dunedin Blue Jays

Weekend split for Dunedin with late game heroics on Saturday. Ricahrd Urena made his 2018 debut on Sunday and collected a hit. The big performer on Saturday was Rodrigo Orozco who had three hits and six RBIs. Joshua Palacios was no slouch himself. He homered and had three hits. T.J. Zeuch got hit around a bit on Sunday. He finished with five earned on five and two-thirds of work.

Lansing Lugnuts

Lansing split as well. Sunday’s win saw two homeruns from Christian Williams, whereas Saturday's loss saw a single and a double.

Three Stars

3. Dwight Smith Jr.

2. Christian Williams

1. Cavan Biggio

Great to see what Pompey can do when he's healthy. Two more hits and a steal today, and he's hitting .385 with an OPS of 1.192 in Buffalo, and .393/1.128 including the rehab in Dunedin, with a HR and 4 steals, zero caught stealing. If he stays healthy, he's a guy who could be a great leadoff hitter for the Jays. Can't help but think how much better the Jays' offense would be with a guy like that hitting leadoff and playing RF instead of Grichuk, but he's got to stay healthy.

Bichette's average has fallen below .300, but he's up to 6 SB's. He's set the bar so high, you almost feel disappointed he's ONLY hitting .295.

really nice to see pompey showing his power again. that more than anything might be a sign that he really is healthy this time.

Granderson's ideal position right now is LH DH, and he'd do a better job of it than Morales.  That would create an opening for Pompey.  I don't think that the club is thinking that way though and it is likely that a sustained period of performance from him will be required.

Agreed Mike, plus a sustained period of health.

I have always liked Pompey's skill set, it is a matter of health and sustained level of performance in the upper minors. The latter hasn't happened yet, although the former might be part of the reason. The more good players the Jays have in the minors, the better. If Pompey goes from forgotten to a legit option again, then it's a huge positive.

New Hampshire has a short porch on right-field, but all three of Biggio's homers have been on the road.  Last night's homer went to left-center off a lefty.   Biggio has always hit the ball in the air a lot and had pretty good plate discipline.  If he is getting stronger, he becomes a very interesting player.

yeah I'd like to see them let Pompey hit in AAA for a good stretch before even thinking of calling him up. Just a nice long sustained stretch of consistent healthy playing time for the first time in years will be good for him, if he can do it.

no rush right now and this roster has lots of moving pieces that could go in all sorts of directions.

I don't know what this is but i thought it was interesting:

CF Pillar 29
RF Granderson 37
LF Pearce 35
3B Donaldson 32

For perspective, Warmoth is 6 months younger than Biggio.

Biggio didn't show any HR power in Vancouver but Nat Bailey suppresses HRs for all hitters and particularly for LH batters. Biggio also comes with average to slightly above average defense and baserunning. So he doesn't have to hit a ton for him to be interesting.

Palacios is a guy I have always thought was an interesting prospect so I am glad to see his health and early success this season. He also comes with above average defense and baserunning.

Team Old, Team Young Prime, Team Baby (uglyone Monday, April 23 2018 @ 10:36 AM)

Now
Gurriel is playing in Toronto. Is it about time to put Leblebijian and Espinosa on 40-men roster and promote
Leblebijian once Gurriel cool off? By that time of Leblebijian's promotion, Pompey shall be ready to play in Toronto.

Sometimes there is no competition for a job. Pillar and Pompey. Both were healthy but it was Pompey's job to lose.

If Pompey was successful then Pillar would compete for the LF job since RF belonged to Bautista.

Just about the game tomorrow night, would there be a 1 minute of silence for the victims today in North York?

Angel Perdomo starting for Dunedin tonight.

Dunedin has placed pitcher Jackson McClelland and shortstop J.C. Cardenas on the 7-day disabled list.

Biggio with a 2/5 night tonight including another home run. As I mentioned in the last minor-league thread, he is off to an intriguing start this year.

Guerrero Jr. also had a solid performance today (2/4 with a double).

On uglyone's Team Young, all 3 starting outfielders and the DH have played more CF than either corner. On a related note, I think there's a good chance Pillar is gone before the start of 2019.
uglyone - Tuesday, April 24 2018 @ 09:45 AM EDT (#356787) #
at the risk of starting a fight, i just noticed that only 4 guys on Team Old are AA guys, 5 if you include smoak, with one of them being Pillar, who probably doesn't really belong there.
whiterasta80 - Tuesday, April 24 2018 @ 10:21 AM EDT (#356790) #
Agree that Pillar is not long for this team if either Pompey or Alford emerge. Heck even with Teoscar and Grichuk I might be inclined to trade him before his defence dries up and he has his typical second half collapse.

whiterasta80 - Tuesday, April 24 2018 @ 10:23 AM EDT (#356791) #
Even Dwight Smith Jr. is performing well at AAA.

Second generation talent= new market inefficiency.

Angel Perdomo had a great start for the D-Jays this morning- 5 innings, 3 hits, no runs, one walk, seven Ks.  Dunedin leads 1-0 on a Palacios triple and a Urena sac fly in the sixth.
uglyone - Tuesday, April 24 2018 @ 12:23 PM EDT (#356801) #
I really hope Urena goes back to AA, not AAA.
dan gordon - Tuesday, April 24 2018 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#356809) #
Great to see that start by Perdomo, especially the 7/1 K/BB ratio. I was concerned when he didn't show up on any of the rosters when the season opened. Must have been a minor injury. Travis Bergen gave up his 1st run of the year to lose the game for the D-Jays. Interesting Dunedin stat - Bradley Jones has struck out 30 times and has just 1 walk, in 66 AB's.

Agree about Urena in AA. He didn't hit well at that level last year, and is likely not ready to hit AAA pitching yet. He should demonstrate that he can handle AA first.
