The #BlueJays affiliates took four out of five Monday night. New Hampshire's game in Erie was rained out. Buffalo and Dunedin were off.

Dunedin 9-3 St. Lucie 5-2

Game 1 was a continuation from April 15. Josh Palacios was 5-for-6 with a home run and five RBI and stole a base. Bradley Jones and Eduardo Pinto chipped in with two hits apiece. Rodrigo Orozco reached four times with a hit and three ball fours.

Tayler Saucedo gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hit and a walk while posting a 5-1 K/BB total over seven innings for the win. Ty Tice had a shutout eighth while Jackson McClelland gave up one in the ninth.

Game 2 saw Palacios swat a three-run homer as part of a 2-for-3 night at the plate. Kacy Clemens had two hits while Kevin Smith had a walk and a knock.

Connor Eller couged up a run over three innings. Juliandry Higuera got the win with three shutout frames, using two whiffs to offset a hit and a walk. William Ouellette gave up a run in the ninth but got the save.

Eugene 2 Vancouver 0

The C's have dropped three of four to start the season against the team they defeated in last year's Northwest League final. Even though Eugene committed four errors, the C's only had four hits. You can read more about the game right here.

GCL Blue Jays 12 GCL Pirates 4

Gabriel Morena went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI as the G-Jays won their season opener in Bradenton. 2018 first-round pick Jordan Groshans also went deep as part of a two-hit day. Leonardo JImenez had a pair of hits and a walk while Cal Stevenson had one knock and two walks.

Alejandro Melean allowed two unearned runs over four innings. Joey Pulido gave up one unearned run among two in his inning of work. Junior Hinojosa got the win and Nicholas "Funky Cold" Medina got the win and save respectively by pitching two shutout frames apiece.

DSL Blue Jays 6 DSL Diamondbacks 2

Miguel Hiraldo drove in two runs by going 1-for-4 with a double while Rainier Nunez had two hits and knocked home another.  Jhon Solarte and Jose Rivas had a hit and a walk atop of the order with Rivas swiping a base.

Adrian Hernandez surrendered an unearned marker but struck out four over four frames. Williams Moreno was the winning pitcher with 2/1-3 innings of shutout ball in which he struck out three.

The system is now really fun to follow. Lots of interesting prospects up and down the system and tracking their development helps when the major league team offers little joy.

Who is Mc Gregory Contreras? He just popped on the radar when I saw his wRC+ was the highest in the organization(with a small sample size of course) https://www.fangraphs.com/minorleaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=c,-1,6,-1,23,27,28,29,-1,36,24,25,30,32,35,-1,6,-1,5,7,8,9,10,11,14,16,17,18,19,21,22&season=2018&team=0&players=sa918557,sa829749,sa657953,sa917949,sa738582,sa738624,sa917178,sa3004501,sa739308,sa829879,sa918639,sa920245,sa908697,sa738162,sa918500,sa876814,sa3003959,sa658008,sa737505,sa876087,sa873960,sa740813,sa829562,sa875228,sa601924,sa660586,sa872817,sa597794,sa915864,sa918192,sa738437,sa736829,sa872466,sa3004813,sa918963,sa3005486&sort=8,d

The Palacios homer in the completion of the suspended game was actually hit by Pompey.

I believe Contreras is the guy I brought up when someone said he didn't like mixed names like Wellington Castillo.
mathesond - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 08:45 AM EDT (#360199) #
I really hope Funky Cold Medina makes it to the bigs.
Gerry - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 09:18 AM EDT (#360201) #
The boxscore for the Dunedin April 15th game that was finished yesterday is screwed up. The boxscore shows Kevin Smith and Kacy Clemens playing a full game but on April 15th they were both in Lansing. Plus Mike points out the Pompey issue.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 09:39 AM EDT (#360202) #
they had the old before up before the game started...and then for some reason, instead of entering in the new lineup all as pinch hitters for each slot they just kept all the stats and changed the names.

I've sent a note to someone that works there to let them know it needs to be fixed.

Hosterman 60-day dl VAN
Gerry - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 11:36 AM EDT (#360207) #
I think Hosterman had surgery, but I don't know specifically what it was.

With Bluefield getting started today and the Fisher Cats and Bisons playing doubleheaders, there are nine games on the minor league schedule today (even with the Midwest League All-Star break).  Zeuch and Borucki get two of the starts.
Gerry - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 12:12 PM EDT (#360209) #
29 y.o. Matt Tracy, with one MLB game under his belt, starts for the GCL Jays today. I assume he was signed as a free agent to cover for injuries and/or trades.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#360210) #
Tracy was actually signed in the off-season but has been MIA until recently... he must have hurt himself in the spring.
Gerry - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 01:00 PM EDT (#360211) #
Ah, the GCL....The Jays hitters have been walked eight times through two innings.
hypobole - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 01:35 PM EDT (#360213) #
In that vein, 17 yr old Ronald Govea, signed for $250 K IIRC, went another 4 shutout innings in the DSL. His early line:

3 G, 7 IP, 4H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K.

Don't know how good his stuff is, or if this will last, but it's nice to see a seeming strike thrower.

So, in the end, it seems that AA's biggest failure was NOT trading ENOUGH prospects:

https://bluejaysnation.com/2018/06/19/alex-anthopoulos-regrets-letting-ben-zobrist-get-away-at-the-2015-trade-deadline/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

AA says that there was a deal available for Zobrist that year, and it would have cost....

.....Rowdy Tellez.
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#360216) #
UO, the article said that Tellez was an add-on in a deal for Zobrist.  We don't know who the other pieces were.

Apparently, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will be coming up to replace Gaviglio for the paternity leave.  Another move is due when Stroman returns, likely on the weekend.

In the GCL game today, Brock Deatherage hit his 4th homer in 2 games for the Tigers.  Deatherage seems like a perfect name for a metal band, but maybe it's bit too much...
Mike Green - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 04:43 PM EDT (#360219) #
Steve Pearce hit a 3 run homer in the top of the first.  He's 4-6 in Buffalo with a couple of walks.
scottt - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 05:54 PM EDT (#360222) #
From what he just said, it sounds like his regret was not caring about defense.

Bradley Jones has retired

It's amazing how few org guys retire like Jones.

Really nice outings for Borucki and Zeuch tonight. There are some openings...
Shoeless Joe - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 09:22 PM EDT (#360233) #
TJ Zeuch has officially elevated his status, I was admittedly not convinced after a so-so start to AA but he now has 1.28 ERA in his last 6 starts, averaging over 7 innings a start with a 0.97 whip.
uglyone - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 09:47 PM EDT (#360237) #
nice to see the strikeouts tonight.

I'm a big believer in what zeuch's done so far, that he's right on track to being a good mlber, and that his gb% makes up for his lower k%....but even I want to see him strike out a few more guys than he has so far.
greenfrog - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 10:49 PM EDT (#360239) #
Another home run for Kevin Smith (his 4th for Dunedin). Really a very impressive season for him across two levels. He'll be 22 next month. Next season he can work on excelling at AA, then (perhaps) next stop: major leagues.
hypobole - Tuesday, June 19 2018 @ 11:07 PM EDT (#360240) #
De Los Santos 3-5 with his 1st HR in Bluefield's opener. Lots of intriguing MI's in the Jay's system.
