The minor leagues get going today on four fronts. Buffalo, New Hampshire and Dunedin start at home, while Lansing start on the road. Dunedin's home game is asterisk worthy as Dunedin stadium is being renovated so the Jays will play their home games at the Phillies old home in Clearwater. Because of conflicts at the "new" stadium, with other college and HS teams, the D-Jays will play a handful of their home games on the road this year. Buffalo play this afternoon, all others tonight.

Todays starters are Jacob Waguespack, Patrick Murphy, Nate Pearson (assumed) and Josh Winckowski.

The Buffalo rotation is a work in process but seems to be Waguespack, Morimando, Paulino, SRF and Romano. Conor Fisk had been named a starter before SRF came back to town so I assume its him, and not Romano, that goes back to the bullpen.

Enjoy the minor league season everyone.

Over the last while, the jays have acquired a boatload of prospects all with various warts (why they were available), it represents a major challenge for the development staff and will be interesting to follow especially on the pitching side where progress is desperately needed.

I see this years AAA and AA teams as providing quite a few 2020 Opening Day players for the Jays. So I will follow those 2 teams very closely this year. Next year we may/should not have any position players 30+ years old.

The pitching next year could have a mix of 30+ year old players. Maybe 50/50.

Kaitlyn McGrath at the Athletic talked with Gil Kim to mark the opening of the season. Here are a couple of notes:

Alejandro Kirk came into camp 20 pounds lighter than last season

Kevin Smith and Santiago Espinal will share shortstop duties in AA and both will play other positions.

Cavan Biggio will play second base for the first half of the season to try and get better there.

How come the Bisons does not have a first baseman?
After a brief look at all today triple-A rosters, few familiar faces are Torontonian third baseman Eric Wood who is enlisted as outfielder, Marcus Walden on BoSox 40 men roster. Wojciechowsk, Rzepczynski, Copeland, Hechavarria

Waguespack has 5 K's through 3. Benefitting a bit from a big strike zone on the corners. Throwing his fastball at 93.

Fields singles in McGuire who scores after a great slide into the plate to make it 6-0.

Bichette RBI groundout and safe on error. Probably would have got the runner at the plate without the bobble - 7-0 Bisons

Sogard sac fly scores Fields 8-0.

Bichette steals for some reason, was easily safe and the umpire said he overslid the bag. Bo did not agree. Bo seemed to be correct.

Alford singles solidly to right centre.

I am surprised that Taylor is sitting in Dunedin behind Warmoth and Vicuna. Hopefully he's a little banged up.

The major worry I had with Cal Stevenson was whether he would produce any power, and the guy goes and hits a homer in his first at bat!
SK in NJ - Thursday, April 04 2019 @ 09:00 PM EDT (#372053) #
I like Samad Taylor a lot more than both Warmoth and Vicuna, so I hope his playing time won't get impacted by those two. So many infielders in the system are lapping Warmoth on the depth chart. He's not a bust yet by any means, but he has to show something this year.
Nigel - Thursday, April 04 2019 @ 09:06 PM EDT (#372054) #
That set up in Dunedin is even weirder when consider that they have Warmoth playing SS and Vicuna playing 2B. Vicuna is a superior defensive SS. Anyway, it’s only one game.

"He's not a bust yet by any means,"

yeah he is.
