There were just two games on Sunday with two rainouts. Even the Dunedin game had to survive a rain delay. The Tampa domination of Dunedin continued, the Jays were held to two hits. So it was left to Vancouver to save the day. A pair of two run home runs and an excellent start by Adam Kloffenstein got the win.

Buffalo at Rochester - postponed

New Hampshire at Binghamton - postponed

Spokane 3 Vancouver 4

Tampa 6 Dunedin 1

This is what I noted from yesterday's games.

A pair of two run home runs were enough for Vancouver. The hot Luis De Los Santos hit one of them. He was 2-4 and scored two runs to go woth his two RBI. Sebastian Espino hit the other one. He too was 2-4.

Adam Kloffenstein pitched very well. He just needed 78 pitches to get through six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with four K's.

Tampa steamrolled the Jays once again. The Jays had only two hits, both were doubles by backup catcher Anthony Morales. Miguel Hiraldo and Orelvis Martinez both struck out three times.

Jol Concepcion started and had trouble with the strike zone. He gave up five runs in 4.2 innings.

Three Stars

Third Star - Adam Kloffenstein

Second Star - Sebastian Espino

First Star - Luis De Los Santos

Keith Law posted a scouting report from the Futures Game. Here is what he said about Austin Martin.

Austin Martin was Toronto’s lone representative, with a surprising inside-out swing that seems like it’ll rob him of power, although in the game he took a great at-bat to draw a walk, then later stayed on a changeup down and away to bloop a single the other way. At shortstop, he muffed a hard line drive that he should have caught, and his arm still doesn’t appear to be what it was before his junior year.

Uh oh, if Martin's arm is weak then 2B is his probable future.  Of course, it is still good if he can play there and be a 300 hitter with lots of walks.  Not the super star we hoped for, but it'd be solid.  Biggio at 3B then and while defense wouldn't be wow, it would be 2 high OBP guys in the lineup with tons of power from others (Vlad, Bo, Hernandez, etc.)

I still think Martin fits in center, so they can move Springer to a corner.

Kloff with a good game. Not 21 until Aug 25. Therefore young. If healthy he should get another 10 starts this year. Could be in AA next year.

Is Keith Law's report based only on Martin's performance at the Futures game, or does it involve additional scouting? If it's just that one game, I wouldn't worry at all about the report that Martin has an "inside-out" swing. He might have just been trying to take the ball the other way.

Martin hasn't shown much power this year though, so it may be something to watch. Overall his adjustment from college directly to AA is going quite well.

The report was just from the Futures game. But since Law made it a point of emphasis, it seems rather new.
As for worrying about it, Boggs, Jeter, Gwynn had inside-out swings. Since Martin doesn't have the raw to be pull-happy, maybe it's best those are who he should be trying to emulate.

There is an article on Martin at Sportsnet.ca where his hitting coach Matt Hague says that Martin, instead of chasing gaudy stats, is working on stretching out his moves so that he can react to different pitches better.

I would assume this means his moves during his batting swing.

Jim Bowden in the Athletic today described Martin as the most disappointing prospect at the Futures Game.

Still no Samad Taylor for NH. But he hasn't been placed on the IL either.

Orelvis and Barger hit their ninth home runs tonight. Vinny Capra has three more hits.
