The defending International League East Division champion Buffalo Bisons opened the 2022 season with a one-run win at home.

Buffalo 3 Iowa 2

The Herd went to work early against the Cubs. Vinny Capra drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and came home to score on a Josh Palacios home run. Eric Stamets took one for the team in the fourth and he would score on an L.J. Talley double. Kellin Deglan and Logan Warmoth also doubled. Capra, Palacios and Stamets reached base twice with Capra collecting a single while the latter two drawing a walk apiece. Cullen Large was plunked. Samad Taylor was 0-for-4.

Former Iowa Hawkeye Nick Allgeyer spun six shutout innings with just one hit and one walk allowed, rolling sixes in the strikeout and groundout categories for the win. Joe Biagini coughed up two runs on a run-scoring double, a walk and an RBI groundout in the seventh. Graham Spraker struck out the side to offset a walk in a scoreless eighth. Kyle Johnston gave up a one-out double and plunked a batter with two outs before ending the game with a strikeout to get the save.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

Yay! First box score of 2022 that counts! Josh Palacios trying to show he deserves to be first in line if/when Springer or another outfielder goes down this year with his two run home run and walk. Nice that Allgeyer went 6. Even nicer the Jays pitchers going 3-11 for BB-SO.

Anyone know the status of Joey Murray? He basically missed all of last season but I never heard the reason for it. Now he's not on the Buffalo roster to start this season. Is he still injured and if so, what is the injury?

Same question about Edisson Gonzalez. He seemed like an interesting sleeper prospect heading into last season but didn't play.

Palacios could be a thing if the added muscle does translate into more power.

Very happy that Jose Ramirez extended with Cleveland - seems happy there and took a team friendly offer - Mercifully, all the Ramirez trade speculation has come to an end!

The Dunedin roster is coming into focus and it looks interesting. Both Rikelbin De Castro and Estivan Machado are on the roster. I assume they will split time at shortstop. Some Canadian content is through Damiano Palmegiani who will cover third.

The FCL Jays had one the best offenses in the FCL last season and some of their big hitters are now on the Dunedin roster. Adriel Sotolongo, Gabriel Martinez, Amell Brazoban and Rainer Nunez will be ones to watch.

Dasan Brown returns after retooling his swing, will be interesting to see how he develops.

Ricky Tiedemann and Connor Cooke are among the pitchers with Rafael Ohashi, Kendry Rojas and Dahian Santos.

Hopefully the roster will come together and The D Jays will have a fine season.

Joey Murray is on the New Hampshire roster. Joining him in the rotation are probably Maximo Castillo, Elvis Luciano, Nick Fraze and Paxton Schultz.

Orelvis is on the roster as is Spencer Horwitz and Tanner Morris. I am not sure how many runs that roster will produce. But there may be help on the way when the new signings come to Buffalo (Fuentes, Fowler, Smith) and corresponding moves are made.

Game 2 not as good - Kay got pounded for 4 runs in 2 2/3 IP (5 H 4 R 3 ER 4 BB 2 SO), 3 of the 4 relievers gave up runs as well. Samad Taylor played LF and stole 2 bases (got on twice via walks) - maybe he is trying the Tim Raines route - move from 2B to LF and steal a ton while taking walks. Palacios got another hit, Stamets at SS got 2 hits and drove in 2. Frustrating for Kay - he just hasn't been what he looked like he could be. Might be time to move him to the pen and see if he can do well in 1 inning situations.

Kay has just never really shown enough control or command to be a realistic starting pitcher prospect. I was disappointed to see him in the Buffalo rotation, his only realistic chance to make it is as a reliever. Pretty sure this is his last option year, if he's on the 40 man might as well see if you can salvage him.

Disappointing to see Murray back in New Hampshire. It's not as if there are good prospects holding him back from a Buffalo rotation spot. Can't help but wonder if the injuries have resulted in diminished stuff for him. Optimistically the Jays could be easing him back in since he hasn't really pitched in games since 2019. Hopefully he has a good start and gets to Buffalo quick.
