Yesvage and Stanifer walked eight between them but I wonder if it was them or the umpire. I see there were 20 walks in the game between the two teams.

If you look at some of the pitch charts in gameday there are lots of pitches in the middle of the zone that were called balls. Either gameday was mis-calibrated or the umpire might need glasses.

Very impressive performance by Nimmala in A+ ball to date.

I mentioned this a while back, but the Blue Jays might want to see if they can negotiate a long-term contract with Nimmala in the next few years (maybe akin to Carroll’s contract with the Diamondbacks — 8-year contract plus club option for ninth year). The Jackson Merrill 9-year contract is another possible comp.

"Very impressive performance by Nimmala in A+ ball to date."

I agree greenfrog, as of today he is 6th overall in BA at .288, tied for the league lead in doubles with 11 and HR's with 8 and he is 2 yrs young for Hi A ball.

He is also increasing his contact rate and striking out less as times goes, he may well be the top prospect in the Northwest League. I have been very impressed.

It's probably pointing out the obvious but still worth pointing out that Roden is absolutely demolishing AAA through his first 50pa there since his demotion.

and it's not just the top line numbers, but everything.

The walks are high, the Ks are very low, the power is huge. Even the pretty high babip isn't really a concern because it's a) not that high at .389 and b) it's almost exactly the same as his .386avg, so it's not really carrying his average - he could have an average babip and still be a .300 hitter with no other changes.

Obviously the jays shouldn't keep him down when he's hitting like this, but then again they won't want to rush him right back either, and with both Lukes and Straw still producing it's not immediately urgent.

But what Roden is doing in AAA is showing some very, very high MLB potential very soon, so they can't afford to dilly dally on this one too long.

Agree with Ugly and it's worth noting that defensive metrics love Roden's D in LF and don't like Lukes' D overall. Lukes deserves to get some playing time but if the Jays call Roden up, they need to be playing him at least 4 times a week.
uglyone - Wednesday, May 21 2025 @ 12:18 PM EDT (#460184) #

Roden's career:

* AAA (24-25): 336pa, 12.2bb%, 13.7k%, .351babip, .325avg, .211iso, 152wrc+
* AA (23-24): 453pa, 12.1bb%, 14.6k%, .316babip, .287avg, .158iso, 140wrc+
* A+ (23-23): 323pa, 13.0bb%, 9.9k%, .353babip, .321avg, .138iso, 153wrc+
* A (22-22): 115pa, 14.8bb%, 11.3k%, .253babip, .374avg, .078iso, 106wrc+

and that includes a little dip in AA the year they tried to change his swing for a bit.

no reason to think this guy can't be a good mlb hitter.

In addition to being an excellent hitter and fielder, Roden has been a highly efficient base-stealing threat. He's 3-0 in 10 games this year and 46-6 in his minor league career of 285 games. He has been batting leadoff for Buffalo this year, and that's probably an excellent place for him. His medium-range power, pesky patience and base-stealing prowess all work in that role.
Kelekin - Wednesday, May 21 2025 @ 03:05 PM EDT (#460188) #
Roden's wOBA is 96th percentile, and his xwOBA is still a mighty fine 88th percentile.

However, he's 36th% in swinging at pitches outside the zone, 26th% in walk rate, 36th% in barrel rate, and 3rd% in sweet spot.

I'm a big Roden stan, and think he'll be a solid major leaguer. But I'm okay with him staying in AAA for a bit and working on things for now.

I think i'd be happy with this position player depth chart come midseason:

* POS: MLB ---------> AAA ------------> AA

* CF: Varsho 28 ----> Clase 23 -------> Brown 23
* RF: Springer 35 --> Loperfido 26 ---> Bohrofen 23
* LF: Roden 25 -----> Schneider 26 ---> Arias 21
* 3B: Barger 25 ----> Wagner 26 ------> Keys 22
* SS: Bichette 27 --> Jimenez 24 -----> Nimmala 19
* 2B: Gimenez 26 ---> Martinez 23 ----> Paulino 22
* 1B: Guerrero 26 --> Nunez 24 -------> McAdoo 23
* DH: Santander 30 -> Tirotta 26 -----> Pinango 23
* C: Alejandro 26 --> Bethancourt 33 -> Duran 21

* UT: Lukes 30 -----> Stefanic 29 ----> Harry 22
* OF: Straw 31 -----> Schreck 24 -----> Martinez 22
* IF: Clement 29 ---> Kasevich 24 ----> Pinto 21
* C: Heineman 34 ---> Sanchez 28 -----> Parker 22

Of course there's a number of names in AAA there that i'd love to see up with the big team too if they earn it.

And ideally most of those 23yr olds in AA would be deserving of AAA time this year but I'm not sure we can count on any of them for that. Though Pinango is clearly on track for promotion if he keeps up his torrid pace for much longer.

Kelekin, I think some of these numbers must be a little dated - Roden has a 12% BB right now, which is above-average, even for AAA.

But I don't think Roden is supposed to be a big bopper, or really a tremendous drawer of walks - he should be a guy who hits for average, with enough on-base and power to add up to above-average production at the plate, so I'm not terribly concerned if his barrel rate is only middling.

I think the positives right now in AAA are more than just the surface stats: he hit way too many grounders in the majors and not enough fly balls or line drives. In his 10 games in Buffalo, he has a career-high rate of fly balls, and a career-low rate of grounders. And his contact rate is up a couple ticks from where it was last year in AAA too.

All that said, there isn't an obvious need for him in the majors now that Varsho is back, so I don't have any problem having him continue to destroy AAA pitching for awhile longer.

Thanks GabrielSyme. Looked into a bit further, and the stats were prior to yesterday's game. He had a 2 BB game, and given that he's only at 50 PAs now, that's a pretty meaningful jump in one game, so I'm sure it looks a lot better now.

Kelekin - Wednesday, May 21 2025 @ 10:53 PM EDT (#460214) #
Sam Shaw now up to .279/.449/.971 with 5 HR and 26 BB to 27 K.

I said before that this new version of Shaw (added weight in the off-season... now is not overly athletic, not great defensively) is going to have to really hit and, so far, he's looking very promising at the plate.

As of now at BR for 50+ PA in the minors we have (top OPS) with an + by guys who are 100+ PA...

Roden: 1.130 (LF-25 AAA); Yeuni Munoz: 1.054 (RF-21 A); Yohendrick Pinango+ 1.037 (LF-23 AA); Adrian Pinto 985 (A+-22 2B); Sam Shaw+ 971 (2B-20 A).

Interesting mix there - 3 OF, 2 2B. A shame none of those 5 are SS/CA. Top SS is Arjun Nimmala+ 898 19 A+, top CA is Edward Duran+ 866 21 A.

Most HR is Nimmala at 8, then 4 guys at 7 (Pinango, Pinto, Schreck, Jace Bohrofen). Duran leads in 3B with 4, Nimmala in 2B at 11, Pinango in hits at 43. Clase leads by a lot in SB with 15 (next is 9), Manuel Beltre leads in R with 32 (6 up on 2nd), 3 way tie for RBI (Duran, Keys, Aponte), top for walks is Je'Von Ward, tops for swing and miss is Peyton Williams (49 K's in 141 PA, 1B/DH with a 536 OPS in AA).

Always interesting to dig into leaderboards.
