Two hitters hit their first home runs at a new level. Dasan Brown his his first AAA home run and JR Freethy his first at AA. NH scored seven runs on their way to a win to finish out a disappointing 56-81 campaign. Buffalo fell a run short. I also took a look at the origins of the Jays major league bullpen.

Second Star - Ryan McCarty

First Star - JR Freethy

NOTES

Buffalo went down 5-1 early but scored a single run in the sixth, eighth and ninth but fell just short at 5-4. Dasan Brown hit his first AAA home run, Brandon Valenzuela hit his third with the Bisons. Michael Stefanic had two hits, Riley Tirotta tripled and RJ Schreck doubled.

CJ Van Eyk made his second start against Rochester this week and he gave up five runs in four innings. Lazaro EStrada followed with 2.2 innings. Estrada was last optioned by the Jays on July 30th. A horrible August followed with a 9.30 ERA. He moved to the bullpen and has pitched better with a 1.00 ERA in nine August/September relief innings.

New Hampshire had a big five run fourth inning on their way to a win. Damiano Palmegiani started things off with a triple. Jevon Ward followed with an RBI single. Peyton Williams then doubled, Ryan McCarty singled and JR Freethy hit his first AA home run, a three run shot. McCarty added a two run homer in the eighth. Ward, Williams, McCarty and Freethy each had two hits.

Grant Rogers, like Van Eyk, had to face the hitters for the second time in a week. He did it better, six innings, two runs, five K's. Rogers has been the cornerstone of the AA rotation since May. While hot shots like Yesavage and Stanifer have breezed in, Rogers made 20 starts with a 4.07 ERA, in 14 of those starts he gave up three runs or less. A job well done.

I was listening to a BA podcast this week and it got me thinking about relief pitchers and where they start out as pros. I looked at 17 relievers who have pitched in the Jays bullpen this season. I was wondering how they came to the major league bullpen. Some were major league starters and most were minor league starters.

Jeff Hoffman has made the most major league starts from the bullpen guys and the most minor league starts. Hoffman has 50 major league starts and 95 minor league ones. Several players have made around 20 starts in the majors. Chad Green was at 24, Louis Varland and Yariel Rodriguez 22 and Ryan Borucki 21. Eric Swanson had eleven. Several players were in single digits, likely as openers.

The most minor league starts after Hoffman is 82 by Borucki. Chad Green, Paxton Schultz and Varland are in the 70's. Eric Swanson is at 65, Dillon Tate 60 and Seranthony Dominguez 57. Jacob Barnes made 48 and Brendon Little 41. Yimi Garcia and Braydon Fisher just made it into double digits.

That leaves five pitchers who are bullpen only guys, mostly. That's about 30% of Jays relievers who made it by being exclusively relievers versus 70% who started as starters including some who made it to the majors as a starter.

Tommy Nance made six starts in the minors, Justin Bruihl 3, Ryan Burr 2 and Nick Sandlin one. But the one pitcher who has never started is Mason Fluharty. And in three college seasons he never started. He is unique on the Blue Jays.

So only 1 week of bisons ball left in the milb season.

Asterisk = promoted
Double Asterisk = demoted

Nice to see Leo come back from injury. These two still the clear standouts down here.

C Valenzuela (24): 93pa, 11.8b%, 29.0k%, .269bip, .210avg, .160iso, 78wrc+

Nothing to love or hate in here. Obviously the younger ones are the more promising.

Strugglers

IF Martinez (23): 394pa, 11.9b%, 28.4k%, .215bip, .176avg, .173iso, 73wrc+
OF Brown (23): 12pa, 16.7b%, 16.7k%, .000bip, .100avg, .300iso, 71wrc+

IF Kasevich (24): 92pa, 12.0b%, 17.4k%, .234bip, .190avg, .013iso, 45wrc+

Probably should drop Orelvis here but i'm not sure that he's actually gone yet despite the DFA.

I guess they want to give Brown's D+Speed combo more time even though he didn't do anything to earn this promotion.

I wouldn't read a ton into Kasevich's poor line coming back from long injury this year, but it's hard not to read a bit into it - after all, his successful AAA stint wasn't all that much bigger a sample than his struggles this year. For AAA now his total line is: 265pa, .322babip, 93wrc+. Still decent for a glove-first SS at his age.

AA

Very Young For Level

OF De Los Santos (20): 6pa, 16.7b%, 33.3k%, .333bip, .200avg, .000iso, 72wrc+

Does anyone know why this kid was given this cup of coffey?

Young for Level

OF Arias (21): 150pa, 9.3b%, 25.3k%, .292bip, .226avg, .105iso, 83wrc+

Finished the year injured and not great in AA. But still a decent year overall.

Age-Appropriate

UT Freethy (22): 12pa, 16.7b%, 33.3k%, .200bip, .200avg, .300iso, 141wrc+
OF Martinez (22): 248pa, 7.7b%, 19.4k%, .307bip, .250avg, .098iso, 94wrc+
IF Paulino (22): 360pa, 6.9b%, 27.2k%, .237bip, .198avg, .164iso, 82wrc+
IF Harry** (22): 141pa, 10.6b%, 23.4k%, .191bip, .153avg, .073iso, 46wrc+
C Deschamps (22): 35pa, 8.6b%, 34.3k%, .150bip, .094avg, .031iso, -8wrc+

Really nice to see Freethy get this cup of coffee to end the year. I thought they held him down in Dunedin for too long this year, and didn't think he'd get a 2nd promotion after Vancouver - but he did. And it was well earned. He'll have to start next year in AA this year at 23, which is still a bit behind legit prospect track, but it's fine for his pedigree. Does anyone have any idea if they've found any kind of defensive home for him yet?

Martinez kept his line up to a decent level, though I don't think he earned a promotion and will be back to start next year. Paulino ended the year in a terrible slump which completely ruined his season.

I know Deschamps is an org guy but at his age I wish he got more of a shot here, given how weak the competition was.

Slightly Old for Level

OF Pinango* (23): 192pa, 14.1b%, 21.9k%, .357bip, .298avg, .224iso, 169wrc+
C Gilliland** (23): 7pa, 14.3b%, 57.1k%, 1.000bip, .200avg, .200iso, 155wrc+
IF McAdoo (23): 494pa, 9.1b%, 27.7k%, .321bip, .247avg, .166iso, 114wrc+
OF Bohrofen (23): 335pa, 12.5b%, 34.0k%, .297bip, .204avg, .173iso, 103wrc+
OF Brown* (23): 276pa, 11.6b%, 30.4k%, .259bip, .175avg, .074iso, 65wrc+
IF Dejesus (23): 214pa, 9.3b%, 30.8k%, .276bip, .188avg, .078iso, 57wrc+
C Sharp (23): 209pa, 8.1b%, 27.8k%, .231bip, .161avg, .044iso, 50wrc+
C Stone (23): 107pa, 4.7b%, 21.5k%, .213bip, .180avg, .070iso, 40wrc+

I think McAdoo earned the promotion to AAA next year. Bohrofen is a bit iffier - but I would probably bump him up anyways.

Really too bad that both these somewhat promising catchers were so terrible this year. They'll probably have to be demoted next year to make room for Duran and maybe Parker.

Old for Level

OF Schreck* (24): 169pa, 15.4b%, 23.7k%, .311bip, .266avg, .252iso, 166wrc+
UT Hornung (24): 214pa, 9.8b%, 34.1k%, .400bip, .269avg, .177iso, 128wrc+
C Valenzuela* (24): 374pa, 10.7b%, 22.2k%, .266bip, .229avg, .159iso, 106wrc+

Schreck earned his promotion of course. And Valenzuela was good enough for a defensive C. I don't think there's any promise in that Hornung line though.

A+

Very Young for Level

IF Nimmala (19): 543pa, 10.1b%, 21.4k%, .266bip, .224avg, .156iso, 91wrc+

He'll have to repeat the level next year. No rush of course but that's too bad.

Young for Level

UT Shaw (20): 28pa, 3.6b%, 32.1k%, .167bip, .111avg, .037iso, -23wrc+

Hopefully both he and Nimmala hit well enough to get bumped up to AA midseason next year.

Age Appropriate

OF Arias* (21): 318pa, 11.3b%, 20.1k%, .367bip, .294avg, .143iso, 128wrc+
IF Toman (21): 53pa, 11.3b%, 22.6k%, .406bip, .302avg, .047iso, 124wrc+
IF Coffey (21): 440pa, 10.7b%, 22.7k%, .341bip, .273avg, .154iso, 118wrc+
C Duran (21): 140pa, 11.4b%, 18.6k%, .269bip, .230avg, .107iso, 90wrc+

I'd say Coffey should be starting in AA next year. Duran a bit iffier but given how strong he looked here after a terrible first 50pa, and given the lack of competition in AA, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts in AA next year too.

Toman not terrible here but will be returning to this level i think.

Slightly Old for Level

IF Pinto (22): 85pa, 9.4b%, 16.5k%, .264bip, .284avg, .324iso, 165wrc+
OF Hernandez (22): 106pa, 9.4b%, 17.0k%, .324bip, .293avg, .174iso, 124wrc+
3B Keys (22): 529pa, 16.3b%, 22.1k%, .250bip, .217avg, .191iso, 118wrc+
UT Freethy* (22): 120pa, 15.0b%, 19.2k%, .320bip, .253avg, .111iso, 117wrc+
OF Martinez* (22): 65pa, 10.8b%, 24.6k%, .333bip, .236avg, .073iso, 95wrc+
C Deschamps* (22): 70pa, 10.0b%, 40.0k%, .393bip, .196avg, .089iso, 90wrc+
C Parker (22): 276pa, 7.6b%, 19.6k%, .265bip, .233avg, .153iso, 89wrc+
IF Harry (22): 225pa, 9.3b%, 18.7k%, .272bip, .228avg, .099iso, 77wrc+

I think Hernandez and Keys could also have earned cups of coffey in AA to end the year just like Freeth, and probably start there next year.

Parker probably has to repeat the level but it wasn't a completely terrible year so a promotion to start or early next year might be in the cards.

Old for Level

OF Micheletti (23): 464pa, 16.8b%, 15.1k%, .241bip, .228avg, .190iso, 124wrc+
IF Goodwin (23): 385pa, 13.5b%, 17.9k%, .275bip, .244avg, .159iso, 117wrc+
C Gilliland (23): 83pa, 15.7b%, 33.7k%, .300bip, .206avg, .132iso, 88wrc+
C Stone* (23): 63pa, 6.3b%, 17.5k%, .222bip, .185avg, .074iso, 50wrc+

Micheletti should have earned a cup of coffeey in AA this year imo, as he was pretty dominant as soon as his babip evened out. I think he's worth keeping an eye on.

See if these guys are anything here next year.

Age Appropriate

OF Joseph (20): 323pa, 5.9b%, 18.6k%, .290bip, .245avg, .119iso, 97wrc+

Both Chirinos and Joseph could join Shaw in A+ to start next year.

Slightly Old for Level

OF Licourt (21): 45pa, 8.9b%, 48.9k%, .333bip, .171avg, .073iso, 44wrc+

Munoz could easily be bumped up to start next year. But the rest of these guys will be back.

The Jays released Orelvis Martinez outright after DFAing him a few days ago to add Alek Manoah back to the 40-man roster.

Martinez was on optional assignment to Triple-A Buffalo and landed on the minor league injured list with an undisclosed injury last week. Injured players cannot be placed on outright waivers. Players on the 40-man roster can’t be traded after the deadline. Once the Jays designated Martinez for assignment, they had no choice but to release him.

Toronto could have placed Martinez on the MLB 60-day injured list rather than designating him for assignment in the first place. That also would have opened a 40-man roster spot but would have required paying him the prorated major league minimum salary for the final two weeks of the regular season. That the Jays preferred to release him rather than pay the roughly $70K to keep him on the IL is a testament to how far his stock has fallen. There’s a good chance they intended to run him through outright waivers at the beginning of the offseason.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/09/blue-jays-release-orelvis-martinez.html

So according to MLBTR, the Jays knew DFAing Orelvis would lead to his outright release because he couldn't be waived to be outrighted to AAA because of his minor league injury last week.

Martinez' stock is so low they opted to release him rather than calling him up to add to the 60-man like Robinson Pina & paying him an extra 70k.

Long time Blue Jay minor leaguer Rafael Lantigua is being called up by the Phillies. It's nice to see the 27 year old finally make it to the bigs.

Between Trey Yesavage’s stellar season and the breakouts of Johnny King and Gage Stanifer–not to mention dealing multiple other strong performers for help at the deadline–few pitching development programs had a better year than Toronto’s. There are some lows: Ricky Tiedemann’s latest return has slowed, designating Orelvis Martinez for assignment stings and Arjun Nimmala’s bumpy second half took some of the air out of his early surge in Vancouver. Altogether, though, this is a system on the upswing.
