Buffalo starts the minor league season tomorrow, Friday. They start at home in what you would not call baseball weather. New Hampshire and Vancouver start a week later. Dunedin starts a day before NH and Vancouver as they do not play on Easter Sunday. The complex league starts in May.

The Buffalo roster seems to be set. Grant Rogers will start game one. It is not clear who the other starters will be. CJ Van Eyk, Lazaro Estrada and Adam Macko have both started and relieved. Ricky Tiedemann is on the roster and his role too is not clear. Chad Dallas, back from TJ, should be one of the starters. In general the roster has a lot of older players. There are just four active pitchers with a birthyear in the 2000's. Tiedemann was born in 2002 while Macko, Dallas and Hayden Juenger are all 2000 babies. That means that all the other pitchers are 26 or above. The hitters are not quite as old. Rule 5 pick Hedbert Perez is the youngest at 22. Jon Clase, Yohendrick Pinango, RJ Schreck, Josh Kasevich, Josh Rivera and Brandon Valenzuela are born in the 2000's. All of those hitters mentioned have questions hanging over their ability to become major leaguers, 2026 will be a big year for all of them. We don't know when the Jays will announce the other rosters. Usually they wait until a day or two before opening day. Here's hoping for a successful year.

Connor Cooke has been released. I assume Cooke is one of the unsuccessful Tommy John surgeries.

That's not the official roster yet. Perez won't be in AAA. McAdoo is also on the AAA team.

Looking forward to the season in Vancouver. Hoping the roster is stacked.

Just guessing but it seems to me that - maybe not from opening week because Ricky probably needs a few turns in Dunedin as he builds up - you'll have a fairly ideal setup for tandems. For example, Dallas/Macko. Cheese likely needs to control the buildup a bit and they want Macko to be able to go once through the order (presumably)

Maybe Tiedemann and Van Eck at some point and probably Estrada gets a regular turn to start. The other turn (or two) would probably be veterans like Plassmeyer or Andrews.

My minor league prediction - by seasons end, Arjun Nimmala will be a top 10 prospect on multiple sites.
Marc Hulet - Thursday, March 26 2026 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#476000) #
Vancouver looks like the hitting side will be very weak - Duran, Nimmala and Casey (who has been overhyped) are about it. A few interesting starting pitchers that showed flashes of potential in Dunedin last year.

My minor league prediction is that both Juan Sanchez and Nimmala are top 25 prospects, JoJo Parker is top 50 and Jimmy King and Gage Stanifer are both top 100

off-topic but:

How much of the pre-game pomp tomorrow night will be included in the broadcast stream and does hat start well before the posted game time, or does it start at 7:07 or whatever the listed game time is?

I'm excited for this year, but mostly at the lower levels.

Juan Sanchez and Eleineker Coronado lead the way among hitters coming stateside for the first time. Franklin Rojas and Rafael Flores look good; Rojas is probably our most interesting C prospect outside of Duran. Pieternella is a bit of a sleeper pick, but I'm not sure if he's coming over yet.

Parker, Cook, Piasentin, and Bullard all making their debuts.

We definitely lost quite a few prospects on the pitching side, so it's hard to get as excited. I think Cates is a big sleeper with his development last year.

The Cubs have signed another player to a six-year deal, Nico Hoerner this time.

Charles McAdoo, Ryan McCarty and catcher William Simoneit have been added to the Buffalo roster. Hedbert Perez has been bumped down to NH.

40 man guys (thus first to be called up not counting the injured like Bloss & Tiedemann): Lazaro Estrada (RHP), Chase Lee (RHP), Adam Macko (LHP), Valenzuela (C), Clase (OF)

As an FYI: Bowden Francis is out for 2026 (Tommy John) in case anyone forgot.

As always it will be fun seeing who is called up from Buffalo - last year the Jays used 38 pitchers (inc IKF, Stefanic, Sanchez, and Heineman for 6 games total, Heineman was on the mound more than 'real' pitchers Lawrence, Burr, Lovelady, and Pina) so 34 real ones. plus 24 hitters (3 pitchers were in the lineup as well, but never hit). So 21 pitchers and 11 hitters were used who weren't there opening day. That is more pitchers than Buffalo has and almost as many hitters as they have. So it is safe to say opportunity exists.

I thought I saw an announcement during the offseason the Jays had signed Riley Thompson from the KBO. Did that not happen? I assumed he would be in Buffalo.

Bit disappointed to hear of Connor Cooke being released. When he was piling up ridiculous K numbers a couple of seasons ago I thought the Jays might have finally found a high leverage reliever internally. Anyone know if he was one of the guys who got the brace surgery instead of traditional TJ? I haven't liked the early results from the brace surgery.

Wait did we actually lose Leo or is there still a chance he kicks mccarty off that roster?

For call ups, I wouldn't mind if they gave a cup of coffee to an org guy like Tirotta or Lantigua. You never know.

Lower minors are way more interesting this year. Lots of guys to track. High hopes for Parker, Nimmala, and Sanchez and very interested in how the high-skill guys like Cook, Piasentin, and Bullard look
Marc Hulet - Friday, March 27 2026 @ 09:13 AM EDT (#476023) #
Pitching depth is really a weakness. Other than Tiedemann, there are zero healthy impact arms at AAA. Dallas is probably the next best arm depending on how he holds up after surgery. Macko and Estrada could soak up low-leverage innings. Rogers be ok for a couple starts as long as they're against bottom-10 teams.

Double-A is still a bit up in the air on who makes the tram but currently looks like only 2-3 truly interesting arms.

Yariel Rodriguez must be hanging back in extended spring training.

Lots of hitting depth, intriguing potential platoon or part-time pieces at AAA. Valenzuela and Kasevich probably have the brightest futures ahead.

Very excited about seeing Parker, Nimmala, and Sanchez this season. As others have said the pitching depth in the minors has taken a hit with last season's trade deadline, so hopefully we see some surprise development there.

Other than Tiedemann, there are zero healthy impact arms at AAA.

I don't think you can even count Tiedemann as a healthy arm at this point, given he hasn't stepped on a mound yet this spring. I know he's technically on the Bisons' roster, but I expect his rehab will keep him in Florida until things warm up in May.

Lukes in the opening day lineup. Batting 2nd.

They like Lukes in the 2 hole which is fine as long as they don't start Sanchez tomorrow against a lefty.

At think Sanchez is 2 for 14 against Severino.
