The Jays roll into the windy city off the back of a sweep in Boston. Vlad hit a home run! His first in a month. Can he hit another before June is out? The Jays will roll out Gausman, Corbin and Cease, if the bats come through the wins should keep coming.

SCHEDULE

Friday: Gausman vs Brown

Saturday: Corbin vs Rea

Sunday: Cease vs Imanaga

The Cubs are 39-36, and are 5-5 in their last ten games. Pete Crow Armstrong and Ian Happ provide the thump in the Cubbies lineup.

Brendon Little is with the Jays in Chicago. No move has been announced yet but Chad Dallas's services are probably not needed in Chicago.

Valenzuela not in the lineup today after being the hero last game. In 7 games since Kirk returned, Valenzuela has started 2 of them. It's a unique scenario where the team's leader in fWAR and wRC+ is getting backup catcher playing time now, I can't imagine that has happened often, but there doesn't appear to be any urgency from the team to be flexible with lineups. If Kirk is a 5 out of every 7 catcher like he was last year, then might as well have Valenzuela in AAA since you're risking throwing off his rhythm offensively. If it was closer to 4 out of every 7, with some DH mixed in, then it becomes more reasonable, but I doubt that's in their plans since Springer is their most respected veteran and will handle the DH spot for the rest of the season. It's just a strange scenario. Good problem to have obviously, a catcher developing out of thin air is never a bad thing, but they need to figure out how to play him more.

That rationale only makes sense if you're putting the player's development ahead of the team's performance goals and wins for this season. John Schneider has said that he expects to have Springer in the OF for some games, which I interpreted as Valenzuela getting some DH run.

Personally I would send Valenzuela down for the greater good (not just 2026 season) if I couldn't find him ABs.

Macko has been good. Little's ERA in Buffalo is 2.31, so hopefully he's been better lately.

I guess Dallas was the blow out guy.

You play Springer in the outfield to sit a left outfield bat and DH a right infield bat.
It doesn't have to be a catcher.

Brown is basically a right handed side thrower.
Right handed batters haven't done anything against him this year.
However, picking when to use the backup catcher might have more to to with the Jays pitcher than the opposition pitcher.

Is Ben Brown the worse baseball name?
Is there a John Smith somewhere?

I speculate that the plan had been to send down Dallas for Garcia but Yeni wasn't impressive last night. I would have expected Macko but either him or Little would presumptively be the one to go back when Bieber is activated. Barring an "injury" of course.

Still don't know how they fit both him and Garcia on the roster (Yemi has 8 days left on his clock) barring an injury or giving up on SWR

Based upon the reports that I've seen, I don't think Garcia getting recalled is a given. His stuff has not returned (as of yet).
