Here's two more ads I've spotted in subway stations for the 2003 Jays, reincorporating the Baseball North theme:

- A baseball glove whose inside has been padded with wool

- Vernon Wells's uniform, with his batting gloves attached to his sweater as if they were children's mittens

I thought they were kind of cool, so I figured they were worth wasting a weblog entry on. :-)

Anybody got any other ideas? Here's some of mine:

- An igloo shaped like the SkyDome
- A catcher's mask with a ski mask on top of it
- Carlos Delgado batting while wearing a toque
- The entire Jays dugout chowing down on Timbits
- Orlando Hudson enjoying a large container of poutine

Which reminds me: I guess Wells, Woodward, Hinske, Phelps, Delgado and Lidle probably are entitled to think that their jobs are secure, since they've been featured in ads. Anybody seen Stewart or Escobar in any printed or televised ad copy?

Dave, you should be in the Jays' marketing department. I almost spit out my cheese curds laughing at your last two suggestions, and Tim Horton's should be calling Paul Allamby any minute.

The whole campaign is a winner, and there are also good radio spots. Even on the Official Site, the new slogan is on the banner. The baseball planets are aligning very nicely in Toronto this year, not just at the Dome. A lot of us seem to be having fun at this site, as we had another record number of visits this week -- remember when we got all excited about #10,000? That was just two weeks ago, and we'll spin past 15 K shortly.

On a personal note, of little interest to most of you (but a high school coach's dream come true), a "new kid" who transferred to UFA happens to be an Ontario Blue Jay. It's shaping up to be a great season; I can't wait to play Harbord.

Think being in an ad buys job security? How about the Blue Jays 2003 calendar? Check it out.

Jan: Kelvim Escobar
Feb: Chris Carpenter
March: Tom Wilson
April: Esteban Loaiza
May: Jose Cruz
June: Carlos Delgado
July: Darrin Fletcher
August: Shannon Stewart
September: Vernon Wells
October: Dave Berg
November: Eric Hinske
December: Felipe Lopez

That's right, the 2003 calendar.

The sad subtext to all of this "Baseball North" stuff is that MLB must be pretty confident the Expos aren't sticking around in Canada for much longer.

I like to hold out hope....

They are great ads, though.

And your suggestions are great. Man, why can't we get TimBits are Skydome? That would rock.

Eddie, that's hilarious. What I can't get over is the October poster boy: Dave Berg? Dave Berg? What possessed them to think a veteran utility guy in his first season with the team would be a valuable promotional asset?

And frankly, Tom Wilson's not much better. Was there a Slow White Guy clause in the contract with the calendar company? Oy gevalt. I'm just happy it wasn't 12 months of Paul Godfrey and his friggin' parades....

How far in advance do they produce the 2003 calendar? It must have been a long time ago, if Darrin Fletcher was included in it...

There must be communications problems between the marketing folks and the baseball people if Loaiza was included in the calendar. Anybody with any clue at all as to what was happening on the field knew that Loaiza was going for the long drop after the 2002 season, if not before.

Any guesses as to who will be on the front of the 2003 media guide. My guess is Hinske, since he won the ROY.

Dave, if the calendar people do the media guide, I'll go with Homer Bush.

Escobar seems a good bet to at least start the year with the team since the Jays have signed him to $3.9 million. That's virtuatlly as much as Ugeth Urbina makes and more than Halladay makes. If the Jays had left him in the minors for a couple of more years they wouldn't have been in this fix and would have had his better major league years locked up.

Anyway, it's nice to see the team finally get some competent marketing.
Dave Till - Friday, January 31 2003 @ 05:00 PM EST (#97577) #
Good to hear that Escobar is locked up; now, there's only Stewart to go.

Not sure whether keeping Escobar in the minors would have helped his development. Had he been kept down an extra year or two, he would have undoubtedly pounded AAA hitters into mulch, but still would have had to adjust to facing major-league hitters.

Justin Miller is currently in the same boat; his ERA in Syracuse this year was 1.61. Both Miller and Escobar have great stuff, but don't have great command of it. They may both have confidence problems too.

Thanks for the scoop, R Billie. Avoiding a hearing is good news, and while the number is more than he's "worth" compared to the current free agent market, it's reasonable. Maybe I'm just being optimistic here, but the fact that Kelvim settled amicably might make him more attractive to a save-desperate contender at the deadline. Note to 2004 calendar printers: use Cliff Politte.

Hey which calendar exactly are you guys talking about? Is it the Shopper's Drug Mart one, or am I living in the past?
_Steve Z - Saturday, February 01 2003 @ 02:59 PM EST (#97580) #
David Perkins, Toronto Star, is critical of the Jays new marketing plan, for the most part, even though he's fairly optimistic about the on-field product.

I have the 2003 calendar that was sent to season ticket holders and group sales folks. Here is the lineup:

January: Delgado
February: Roy Boy
March: Hinsk'
April: Wells
May: Phelpsy
June: Stewart
July: Woodward
August: Esco
September: Tosca
October: Politte
November: Werth
December: Wilson

Seems a little more realistic.
