A reminder to all Batter's Box readers: our chat with Alan Schwarz, author of The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination with Statistics, is tonight, June 9, at 7:30 PM Eastern. You can continue to post questions to at the Alan Schwarz chat thread through 8:15 Eastern as the chat is scheduled to end around 8:30.

The easiest way to get to the live chat is to use Batter's Box's own Java applet. It will automatically use your Batter's Box account name -- if you have one and you're logged in, but a Batter's Box account isn't required to chat. Tonight's chat is in a slightly different format than the usual game chat in that it will be moderated by our own Joe Drew. Read on for details.

Tonight's chat will be moderated so Alan will not be overwhelmed with questions; only Alan and the moderator (Joe) will be able to type into the chat. Joe will take your questions, post them to the chat, and Alan will answer inline. More than a dozen fairly detailed questions have already been forwarded to Alan to start us off.

If you have any questions during the chat, there are several ways to get Joe's attention. First, you can e-mail jim with your question. If you're a little more chat-savvy, you can also send Joe a private message: do so by typing /msg Joe, followed by your question, then pressing enter. Finally, if all else fails, as mentioned, you can post your questions to the Alan Schwarz chat thread; Joe will monitor it during the chat.

Remember: Join our Live Chat at 7:30 PM tonight!

In reading the book (I'm not that far into it, but I'm enjoying it), I've noticed two things so far:

1) seems like at least some of the stats we rely on today are popular not because of their worthiness but because of the forcefulness of the personality or personalities behind them;

2) when people say "What are you reading" and you answer "A book about the history of statistics in baseball", they tend to look at you funny and move away. I think I'm going to start saying that it's a murder mystery.

Unfortunately I'll be on the road tonight during the chat so I won't get a chance to participate.

Good luck, and I look forward to reading the transcript afterwards.
