Words from valued Bauxite mamboon in a recent thread:

Right on with the name "Callix Crabbe".  A name like that should automatically earn a 30% bonus on any future contract he gets in baseball.  Callix Crabbe should indeed go down as one of the great names in baseball.  What are some other names that rival ol' Callix?  Can't think of any.

Fabulous question, deserves its own Hall of Names discussion. A few suggestions, not to say rules, as you pursue your best contributions ...

  1. No nicknames. We love Boog Powell and all for which he (rotundly) stood, but let's stick to the art of the given name. Sorry to you, too, Yogi, Mookie, Dizzy, Tuffy, Chili and Boof. (Yes, yes, Bonser actually changed his legal name to "Boof." But that's not his given name originally, so no dice, Boofster.)
  2. No team theme is necessary -- though the two names mentioned in the aforementioned thread after mamboon's post both could've landed spots on our old X-rated team (Rusty Kuntz and Rusty Peters, match made in heav ... er, in hell), but don't limit your thinking that way. Besides, both are disqualified under Rule #1.
  3. We're just looking for names that sound cool ... Callix Crabbe. Laschelle Tarver. Yuniesky Betancourt. Vladimir Guerrero. Lastings Milledge. You get the idea!

Whatchagot, Bauxites?

Dax Jones. Middle name: Xenos.

Zoilo Versalles.

Quinton McCracken.

And for the farm system, Thaddaeus Steele. He sadly didn't make it beyond a single year of rookie ball, but I can only assume that it was because he felt his life was better spent fighting crime.

"Valued Bauxite mamboon"?  That's certainly a bit over the top, but thanks to Mick, we have the initial makings of a top ten list of all time great baseball names.  In my humble estimation, here's how I think the list stacks up...

1. Callix Crabbe  (still my fav, I guess the recentcy and the Blue Jays org. biases me)

2.  Van Lingo Mungo (he even had a song written about him) He left us in '85, known for his carreer with the Brooklyn Dodgers as a pitcher.

3.  Huck Flener  (this one is a broadcaster's nightmare)

4.  Rollie Fingers   (must be the mustache)

5.  Scipio Spinx  (kind of an ancient washed up boxing sound to it)

6.  Trystan Magnusson (sounds like a US Senator's name... another Blue Jays org. bias here)

Thanks to all for the contributions.  Keep 'em coming!  I will do some research and get a bio going for each of the top ten as it develops.  (Slow Wednesday evening for 'ol mamboon, I guess!)
