The affiliates picked up two wins in five tries on Tuesday. Two of the losses were the result of a doubleheader sweep. The Lansing Lugnuts had a chance to put up their feet and relax.

Scranton-Wilkes/Barre 2 Buffalo 1 (Game 1 - 9 Innings)

Buffalo, NY — In the continuation of a game that was suspended due to fog Monday, the Bisons had five at-bats to work with to overcome a one-run deficit. Jonathan Diaz and Luke Scott drew walks to lead off the fifth and sixth and Diaz got a one-out double in the seventh but he was stranded at third base. Diaz was the last man to reach base as the Herd went down in order in the final two frames. Sean Ochinko got the Bisons on the board with an RBI double but he was denied a second run batted in when Daric Barton was thrown out at the plate to end the fourth inning. Ochinko and Barton had two-hit games while Scott drew two walks. Ramon Santiago had a base hit and Andy Burns had a base on balls. Matt Hague, Brad Glenn and Alex Hassan all went 0-for-4 and struck out twice. Buffalo was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base.

Daniel Norris (1-5, 3.38) was nicked for a couple of runs in the first two innings by the Yankees affiliate. Despite five hits and three walks, he kept this game from going off the rails by limiting Scranton to a couple of runs over five frames. He picked off a runner at first and struck out three for a Game Score of 51. Norris set down six in a row at one point. Phil Coke got away with a hit and two walks to put up two scoreless frames that included two punchouts. Fellow lefty reliever Colt Hynes put up a pair of zeros despite a couple of hits and struck out three. Both Coke and Hynes hit a batter.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5 Buffalo 1 (Game 2 - 7 Innings)

The Bisons find themselves at 28-31 after being swept in this doubleheader. Chad Jenkins held the Scranton offence to a single run on six hits over four innings. He struck out one, walked nobody and got six ground ball outs to post a Game Score of 47. Todd Redmond (1-2) did not have it relief as he was rocked for four runs on three hits and three walks in 1/1-3 innings. Rob Rasmussen stranded a runner and offset two walks with three K's in 1-2/3 innings.

The Bisons got on the board first with a first-inning run when Andy Burns had an RBI single with the bases loaded. However, that was all the Herd would get as Daric Barton would ground into an inning-ending double play. Burns and Caleb Gindl had the two-hit games for Buffalo with Gindl getting a double. Luke Scott singled, walked and was hit by a pitch. He was replaced by Chris Dickerson, who also had a base hit. Josh Thole also put a notch in the hit column. Matt Hague reached twice on a walk and a plunk. Barton drew a base on balls. Ramon Santiago was 0-for-4 while Alex Hassan and Jonathan Diaz were both 0-for-3. Stop me if you heard this before but Buffalo was 1-for-7 with runners 180 feet away or less. This time, a total of 10 men were stranded.

New Hampshire 9 Akron 1

Akron, OH
— The Fisher Cats used 14 hits to hammer the Indians affiliate in this series opener. Ronald Torreyes opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third inning, drove in another with a double in the seventh and singled home two more in the ninth. However, the big swings belonged to K.C. Hobson as he homered twice to drive in three runs in the fourth and sixth. Dalton Pompey drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth and another run came home on a wild pitch. Jack Murphy joined Torreyes in the three-hit club with both of them collecting a double. Torreyes also stole a base. Pompey was aboard four times with two hits and two walks and swiped a bag. Jorge Flores was 2-for-3 with a walk while Melky Mesa and Kevin Nolan were both 1-for-5. Cole Garner and Dwight Smith Jr. were 0-for-4 but Garner was hit by a pitch while Smith contributed a run scored.

Matt Boyd (6-1, 1.10) allowed just four baserunners over seven innings on two hits and two walks. The only run came on a home run but Boyd struck out four for a Game Score of 71. Seven of his 10 outs in play were made in the outfield. Jimmy Cordero walked a couple but struck out a batter over two scoreless frames.

Charlotte 11 Dunedin 5

Dunedin, FL
— It was just 1-0 for Charlotte after three innings but things got out of hand after that. Luis Santos (3-5, 5.22) was lambasted by the Rays affiliate for six runs on six hits and two walks over 3-1/3 innings. He struck out four but only received a Game Score of 26. Matt Dermody allowed his two inherited runners to score but pitched 2-2/3 innings of scoreless ball on three hits and a walk while whiffing one. Brady Dragmire was burned for three runs on five hits and two walks but struck out three over two innings. Phil Kish gave up a two-run homer among his two hits in the ninth.

All of Dunedin's five runs came in the eighth inning. Jorge Saez singled home a Dickie Joe Thon triple to get Dunedin on the board. L.B. Dantzler drew a bases-loaded walk, Matt Dean singled home a pair and Thon drove in the last run with a base hit. Saez, Thon, J.D. Davis and Christian Lopes all had two hits apiece with Davis adding a double. Dantzler and Lopes both reached three times by working the count to ball four. Roemon Fields and Boomer Collins also had singles. Mitch Nay was 0-for-4.

DSL Blue Jays 5 DSL Orioles1 4

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
— Despite a converted touchdown's worth of errors, the boys in the Dominican joined the parent club in the walk-off winners circle by also turning a one-run deficit into a one-run victory. Norberto Obeso singled home the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning before Kevin Vicuna, who got aboard with a walk, scored the winner on a wild pitch. The losing pitcher was Erick Encarnacion. Sterling Guzman gave the Jays their first run with a double to cash in a Cristian Peguero walk in the second. The Jays pulled ahead 3-2 in the fourth on a Jesus Navarro RBI single and an error. Guzman and Peguero had the two-hit games with Guzman getting two doubles and Peguero getting hit by a pitch. Obeso and Navarro also took one for the team. Antonio Concepion singled and walked while Francisco Rodriguez had a base hit in four official at-bats.

Juan Nunez got the start but only got two outs as he walked the bases loaded. He would be charged with two unearned runs as Yensy Diaz allowed both of his inherited runners to score but had no runs charged to him over 4-1/3 innings on three hits and a hit by pitch while whiffing four. Jairo Rosario had an unearned run on his ledger as he surrendered two hits, three walks and a plunk over 2-2/3 innings. Pedro Diaz could stranded just one of three inherited runners and gave up an earned run on three walks over two-thrids of an inning. Wilmin Lara (1-0) could only strand one of two runners as he allowed a hit over two-thirds of a frame.

Random thoughts.

Andy Burns seems to have rediscovered his batting stroke, even if it's a bit BABIP driven, plus he hasn't been quite as much of an error machine in the field as he has in the past. Unfortunately, the power/speed combo he flashed in Dunedin seems to have diminished as well.

Has Ochinko passed Jimenez on the catcher depth chart? AJ can't stay healthy and hasn't hit since his Dunedin days. Speaking of catcher health, or lack thereof, still waiting on Pentacost and Danny Jansen who finished last year on the DL is on the DL again.

Nice to see 2015 Pompey have a 2014 Pompey game. Single, triple, 2 walks and a stolen base. Hoping he can string at least a few good games together.

On the downside Smith jr is really scuffling. .839 OPS April, .677 May, .290 June.

Although he hasn't allowed a run, three walks and a hit batter isn't what you'd like to see in four innings for Buffalo so far from Coke.

I know Ochinkko isn't regarded as a strong defender, but does anyone have a scouting report in any more detail?

jimenez has slowly but surely been heating up this year, actually. had an awful april at both levels but has been prett good in may and june, especially for a defensive catcher. he still might be on track for a career on the bench.

nice to see pompey destroy AA in his first 3gms back (211wrc+)....remember at age 22, AA is his age appropriate level, so this would indicate he's still an advanced bat. no need to rush him bsck up but hopefully a couple of weeks there is the confidence boost he needs to get back on track.

Jimenez has been better but now he is back on the DL. He seems to be injury prone.

Random thoughts.

If Andy Burns' power/speed combo he flashed in Dunedin seems to have diminished, would starting him - more playing time at defense - at shortstop and second base help condition his body so that he retain the combo characteristic against erosion of time ?

Do have a teammate whose specific skill(s) are better than those of a Jays prospect help develop those skills ? Because of the Marlins roster consists of young players, a veteran who still is playing in his performance prime help the Marlins. If Navarro is traded, the Marlins shall take Chris Dickerson too and trade Ichiro to the Jays. Goins is known to hit weakly, can he improve with Ichiro as teammate ? Ichiro himself certain adds one more outfielder to an infielders roster. Dickerson shall have his PAs as a Marlins. Ezequiel Carrera back to Buffalo may be the unfortunate loser out of these transactions .

Is Matt Hague an asset for trade ? Donaldson is the obvious Hague's promotion block.

Is Matt Hague an asset for trade ?

I give you points for stubbornness, that's for sure. Hague is a soon-to-be 30-year old career minor leaguer. How much trade value do you think he has? Think Kevin Costner in Bull Durham.

Donaldson is the obvious Hague's promotion block.

Yeah, that's what's holding Hague back.

MatO - Wednesday, June 10 2015 @ 03:45 PM EDT (#302345) #
Just think, we could have kept Lawrie and the prospects that were traded with him, moved Lawrie to 2nd, kept Gose and installed Hague at 3rd.
China fan - Wednesday, June 10 2015 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#302348) #
While of course Hague has zero trade value, it would be a little unfair to suggest that he has no value to the Jays.  After all, they've kept him on the 40-man roster for the past 10 months, while many other players have been dumped or unprotected. That suggests, at a minimum, that the Jays find him a potentially useful depth piece. His OPS has consistently been over .800 at nearly every level of competition he has encountered.  If the Jays have kept him around this long, when they could have easily dumped him to make room for others on the 40-man roster, their scouts must be telling them something good about his performance.

Matt Boyd is a nice trade chip when we acquire Johnny Cueto or Jeff Samardzija

The Shark isn't earning the WSox much in the way of chips. He's got a 4.93 era, a 77 era+, and leads the league in hits allowed. And as highly as I regard Johnny Cueto, I would hope that Anthopolous would value 6 years of Boyd more highly than a dozen or so Cueto starts.

The key to preserving the expensive Jays lineup is to load up on cheap arms.

At this point I'd prefer an ace starter as Sanchez will eventually run out of innings. I'm not counting on Stroman to pitch in September.

JB21 - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 12:30 AM EDT (#302370) #
I would certainly hope AA would give up 6 years of Boyd vs. 12+ starts for Cueto. Especially if it meant a taste of games that actually matter.
John Northey - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 08:55 AM EDT (#302377) #
Cueto will cost at least 2 top prospects even as a free agent.  He has a 2.64 ERA in 11 starts 3.23 lifetime.  This is a legit ace thus always expensive.
A better target might be Aroldis Chapman who is arbitration this winter then free agent post 2016 - a closer who could be a starter potentially who AA regrets not chasing down years ago.

If we really wanted to solve both the rotation and bullpen holes in one fell swoop, go for both Cueto and Chapman.  Something similar to the Lester/Hammel deal last year.
Mike Green - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 12:20 PM EDT (#302388) #
At this point, it is highly speculative whether the Reds will be sellers at the deadline in any event.  If the A's are sellers, which looks more likely at this point, Kazmir could probably be obtained for a relatively modest price in prospects with some salary relief coming.

No trades are sometimes negotiating tools, sometimes not. Off the top of my head are Uehara nixing us and Upton nixing Seattle. I'm sure there are plenty of others, plus those we never hear about.
On the other hand it does seems Paps is willing to forego his Jays no-trade.

Nothing cheap about it indeed. I am really excited about Urena. His rate this season not withstanding, he has walked in the past and the power development is extremely encouraging, as he seems to be trading a few strikeouts for homeruns. Considering he is a young 19 with a legitimate chance to stick at shortstop there is a lot to like there.

Where did you hear that? if that's the case it seems no trades to Toronto are the most common 'negotiating tool' there is. Also seems it's not working very well. When Toronto tried to trade with Texas for Uehara, it was blocked by his no trade. How was that a tool for negotiation? Seemed like a no trade clause to me.

I don't think poor trades are improved any by labelling them "the cost of doing business". I suspect it was pretty easy for Orioles fans to give up Eduardo Rodriguez when he was in the minors and Andrew Miller was going to be in their bullpen for two months. I don't think they'l be thinking it was all that smart a move though, for the next six years while Rodriguez is shutting them down and Miller is pitching for the Yankees.

While I would agree with you in 29/30 situations in baseball, the Jays may be the one team that their fans would rather give up a Norris/Eduardo Rodriguez for a rental player if that meant playoff baseball.

Problem is, making trades at the deadline is still no guarantee. It may mean 1 game as Oakland found out last year, or not even making the playoffs as San Diego found out when they gave up Kluber at the trade deadline a few years ago.
Mike Green - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#302407) #
The topic of the history of prospect for veteran trades at the deadline has been studied quite a bit, and the record is mixed.  For every Bagwell-Anderson or McGriff-Murray trade, there is a Cliff Lee-Carlos Carrasco deal or at least a Cone-Kent deal. I think that Cueto-Boyd+ would be in the Cone-Kent category, with the understanding that Boyd is extremely unlikely to have a career as good as Kent did (much as I like Matt Boyd).
hypobole - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 04:58 PM EDT (#302409) #
We have people here clamouring for AA to give up prospects for a couple of months of a rental.

We also have people (still?) criticizing AA for giving up prospects for multiple years of the reigning NL Cy Young winner.

Don't know if there is overlap between these 2 groups, but the disparity is interesting, to say the least.
John Northey - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 05:10 PM EDT (#302410) #
I know the ultimate rental for the Jays was the Kent/Cone trade.  A near HOF career in exchange for a couple months of a high end arm.  Kent would've been useful in the 90's - would've been at 3B for 93/94/95 instead of Sprague 2+ WAR each year vs Sprague who was 1.4 or less all 3 years.  In 96 if both still here Sprague would've taken over 3B while Kent could've moved to 2B post Alomar (2.4 WAR vs Tomas Perez/Domingo Cedeno/other crap).  Of course in 1993 that means no Sprague in the playoffs 714 OPS in LCS and 1 for 15 in the WS hrm...don't know if it would've hurt not having Sprague then.  Of course, the Jays weren't anywhere near the playoffs in 94-96 at which point Kent would've been a free agent and given Ash's record would've walked or got a stupid big contract.  If resigned though we could've avoided the Homer Bush era at least.

The current rules don't reward trading for guys with less than one year left.

The Jays trading chip is Navarro. Maybe you need 3 teams to get it down. A contending team gives prospect(s) for Navarro. The Jays trade prospects for a pitcher under contract for 2016 from a team looking to dump salary.

Papelbon might be a possibility.

ComebyDeanChance - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 06:53 PM EDT (#302415) #
The current rules don't reward trading for guys with less than one year left.

That's true. When Kent was traded for Cone, the Blue jays got a comp pick for Cone n the draft when he left as a free agent at the end of the year. Jeff Kent turned into a near HOF'er, but at the time it was getting a late first round pick for a rookie. Under the current rules, a team that trades for Cueto can't extend a QO and gets nothing when he goes.
John Northey - Thursday, June 11 2015 @ 11:55 PM EDT (#302417) #
The Jays got Matt Farner & Tony Medrano for losing David Cone.  Neither reached the majors.  That same draft they got Chris Carpenter for losing Tom Henke.  That should've been an amazing draft with 7 extra picks, 4 first round, 2 second, 1 third.  But only Carpenter was any good.  I hate to imagine how a site like this would've reacted to the drafts in the 80's when the Jays did a horrid job generally.
Jevant - Friday, June 12 2015 @ 09:38 AM EDT (#302424) #
I don't think Norris for a surefire ace to get you into the playoffs and then start Game 1 once you get there is a poor trade at all.

The Orioles made the playoffs, almost made the World Series, and Miller was a big part of it.  Cueto's more valuable, in that he starts.  Not sure I'd give up Norris for a bullpen arm, so I agree that the Eduardo-Miller deal was a bit questionable, but for a surefire number 1 starter?  At the cost of a pitching prospect?  You have to make that deal every single time.

The classic deal of this type for me would be Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz in 1987.  Alexander went 9-0 for the Tigers down the stretch with an ERA of about one and a half, and we know how that season ended.  On the other hand, the Twins beat him about twice in the playoffs (he had an ERA of 10) on the way to a World Series win.  The Tigers were a mediocre team  through the 90s and early aughts while Smoltz was fashioning a Hall of Fame career and was a large part of the Braves juggernaut.

Was it worth it for the Tigers?  They were an older club, but the nucleus (Whitaker, Trammell, Gibson and Morris) were right around 30.  They had Milt Cuyler doing well in the low minors and had just made Travis Fryman their #1 pick.  Aside from Smoltz, there wasn't a whole lot of pitching around.  You can certainly make the case that if they had kept Smoltz and missed the playoffs in 1987, they might have retooled to aim for 1990 rather than cycling through veterans in 1988 and 1989.  It's tough to say.
