Gunter glieben glauten globen! Two games were scheduled and one was rained out in Tampa where the GCL Blue Jays were to visit the Yankees. The lone game was in the Dominican and the boys definitely pulled one out of the fire in Boca Chica.

DSL Blue Jays 3 DSL Diamondbacks 2

Boca Chica, DR
- The Jays got on the board first and last and it was just enough to get by the D-Backs. Kevin Vicuna started the bottom of the first with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an Norberto Obeso ground out. Staring at a one-run deficit in the eighth, the Jays tied the game with an RBI single by Antony Fuentes to score an Obeso base hit. Enmanuel Moreta, who reached first on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt to advance Obeso, would come home with the winning run on a passed ball. Jesus Navarro had a single and two walks to lead the way offensively while Obeso had a hit and a walk. Sterling Guzman also reached twice with two bases on balls. Manuel Herazo had a hit and a stolen base. Andres Guerra had the other base knock. It was not a good day for the Rodriguez boys as Yorman was 0-for-2 while Francisco went 0-for-4. Sam Buelens was also hitless in three at-bats.

Jairo Rosario was not too rattled by the Snakes, holding them to two runs on three hits and a hit by pitch over six innings. His K/BB and GO/FO totals were 4-0 and 7-3 to give him a Game Score of 62. Alvaro Galindo (2-0) worked around two hits and a walk to put up three scoreless frames for the victory. He also recorded four groundball outs.

I guess it's been raining a fair bit in Florida lately.

The Jays cleared out a lot of pitching prospects over the month of July, from pitchers traded for international cap space to ones traded at the deadline last week.

But not only have our pitchers been thinned, the catching prospects have had a bad year. There were three catchers in the Jays top 30 prospect list last winter. Between them they have 223 at-bats this year.

Max Pentecost has not played, AJ Jimenez had just over 100 at-bats before injury and the same for Dan Jansen. Even Derrick Chung, who had played well in 2013 and 2014, was sidelined with an injury.

Unless Pentecost can come back in August and show he is back to form, his prospect status is questionable. AJ Jimenez has not been able to stay free of injury for many years now and likewise Jansen has been injured in two straight years. Its a tough position and the Jays are struggling to keep their top catchers healthy.

Griffin Murphy is starting for the GCL Jays today. Murphy was on the Dunedin roster at the end of last year. He hasn't pitched this year.

what is the Jiminez injury this time around?

Don't forget to check on Bergen?

Amidst some of this apparent gloom, would it be fair to say that the DSL team is stronger than ever with perhaps a few legitimate prospects readying to come to NA. I am also intrigued by a couple of lesser known prospects at Bluefield.....OF Rodrigo Orozco and P Juliandry Higuera.

Shane Dawson has been promoted to Dunedin. I was hoping that he would get a promotion.
If we do not sign D Price then S Dawson is also a lefty. Well you have to read between the lines rather than believe everything. D Price's future changes nothing regarding Dawson continuing to be a lefty.

Only 2 of our lefties this year have been good Price & Buehrle. Both may leave next year which makes Dawson our best performing lefty.

Orozco has had a great start with the bat in North America. This is the only story I could find on him. Seems to be pretty raw in the field. Bluefield's Colabello?

Roemen Fields, who has been hitting well in New Hampshire, is now a Buffalo Bison.

Jays have reaquired Gustavo Pierre from the Phillies according to reports on Twitter. I guess the Jays need more errors in the system.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fields is a September callup - the jays version of Jarrod Dyson - I hope his defense has improved with professional help as poster Nigel reported it was poor in Vancouver - this is the type of guy you root for - undrafted, out of baseball and takes advantage of a tryout.

Wonder if Pompey's up soon.

I love what KC did last year with Gore and would love for the Jays to do the same, but Gore's SB:CS ratio is 201/19 whereas Fields' is 76/21.

Pierre was reacquired with a view to converting him to pitching.

Fields is totally the kind of guy I pull for, great story, but no chance he gets the call up this year. It'll be players on the 40 man and guys who are 'part of the team'. Pompey first, then carrera in the of, plus Saunders. Several relievers and middle IF guys will also get the call - tepera, tolleson (anyone know why he's inactive?), delebar, mune, a lefty (Francis)? This won't be an audition type September.

Tolleson is still injured.
PeterG - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 09:42 AM EDT (#307719) #
Actually Fields is expected to be added to 40 and called up because he is a dynamic base stealer off the bench. He will likely be restricted to only pinch running appearances.

"Tolleson is still injured."

James, where did you get this? Injured players go on the DL. Tolleson is on the "Temporary Inactive List". That's supposed to be for players dealing with personal matters.
James W - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 11:35 AM EDT (#307741) #
I recall hearing something on radio or television, when they were speculating who would replace Devon Travis if he were to end up on the DL. They said Tolleson would have been perfect to platoon with Goins, but he was still out. I assumed that meant injured, but from some research, he was activated off the DL on July 1 and designated for assignment, which indicates he's not injured.
John Northey - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#307742) #
One wonders about Tolleson... did he break some rules that the Jays don't want known? If it was drugs I figure the league would've sent out a press release, if he broke the law he'd have been charged thus again public knowledge.  Did he hit on someone's daughter or break some clubhouse 'unwritten rules'?  Just seems odd.  Often being made inactive will be due to a guy being ready to retire but the club wants to retain rights to him but that would be odd given he has under 2 full seasons in the majors and is close to making decent money now.  Hrm... hard to figure this one out.
John Northey - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 11:50 AM EDT (#307743) #
Last thing I found on him was this from MLBTradeRumors....
The Blue Jays announced yesterday that the recently designated Steven Tolleson has cleared outright waivers and been outrighted to Buffalo. The 31-year-old utility man was designated on July 1 after his rehab assignment ended in the minors and Toronto had to make a call on his roster status. He’s been outrighted in the past and will therefore have the option to refuse the assignment in favor of free agency.

So I suspect Tolleson didn't want to report to Buffalo so the Jays put him on the TIL for the season and plan to release him after the year is over so he makes $0 and a message is sent to all players that you go down if you are sent down.  Or else.
hypobole - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 12:20 PM EDT (#307747) #
I think it's something much simpler, and more private with Tolleson. If he didn't want to report to Buffalo, he would have elected free agency.
John Northey - Wednesday, August 05 2015 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#307748) #
You are probably right hypobole.  That is the problem when there is no information one can expand drastically on it.

".....Fields is totally the kind of guy I pull for, great story, but no chance he gets the call up this year. It'll be players on the 40 man...."

If the Jays decide that Fields would be useful in September as a pinch-runner and back-up defensive outfielder, the 40-man roster isn't really a problem.  The 40-man roster currently includes several players who could be cut without much problem: Colt Hynes, Matt Hague, Scott Copeland, Ben Rowen and Ty Kelly.  All of them have a bit of potential value, but none are essential.  In fact most of them are either in the category of "tried and failed" (Hynes, Copeland) or have already been passed over when they could have been promoted for infield vacancies (Hague, Kelly).  Rowen is interesting but seems far down the depth chart for the bullpen, behind Tepera, Delabar, Jenkins and the 8 pitchers who are currently in the Toronto bullpen.  So there's plenty of room for dropping a player or two, if the Jays want to promote Fields or anyone else who is not currently on the 40-man roster.

Justin Maese with another solid outing in the GCL today. His season line now sits at:

1W 0L 0.92ERA 19.2IP 18H 2ER 3BB 12SO, and he has a 2.4 GO/FO ratio to boot. Solid start.

That, to go along with Espada's line:

0W 1L 2.37ERA 19.0IP 10H 5ER 3BB 22SO.

Solid start for a couple 18 year olds
