Hard to imagine big Dan Wright being at his best tonight, with just two starts under his belt since returning from a "sore elbow" and facing the best hitting team in the major leagues. Last September, presumably healthier and fitter, he lost his only previous start against the Jays. Cory Lidle looks for his sixth W in a row, and has had much more success against the White Sox, going 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA the last three years. Only Magglio Ordonez, with seven singles in 10 AB, has done much against the Jays' righty. One team's on a tremendous roll, the other just got swept by their main divisional rival. On paper, it's a bit of a mismatch, which always makes me nervous.

Sore wrist and all, Eric Hinske's back at 3B, but Mike Bordick gives Woody a night off at SS. Unfortunately, it's the only TV game of the series, and Sportsnet has really dropped the ball by not including Thursday's opener in New York on their schedule.

The Jays have the best offense in baseball. They have scored the most runs, have the highest slugging percentage, the highest OPS, and aare fourth in OBP.

It looks like the Jays are really teeing off. If it wasn't for that DP for Mike Bordick in the second...

Cat has a solo homer and a double (misplayed into three bases by Daubach), Stewart a solo shot, Delgado an RBI single, and Myers scored after a leadoff single. The Jays lead 4-1, and have put up at least one run every inning so far. It could have been worse for Wright, who picked off Delgado and fanned Myers to get out of the third, but he's thrown 66 pitches already.

Lidle isn't quite as sharp tonight, and was overthrowing a bit in the second, but escaped trouble with a timely double play ball off the strangely anemic bat of Konerko.

How about the Tigers' Carlos Pena tonight? Three HR, including a grand slam, 7 RBI so far. He's a three-run shot away from homering for the cycle.

Jerry Manuel gave Wright the hook in the middle of an at-bat; lefty reliever Dave Sanders finished walking Hinske, so it's charged to Wright. The main thing the league's worst manager accomplished was to alienate his entire pitching staff while insulting and confusing Wright. It's no wonder Manuel was able to mess up Keith Foulke's mind and ruin Billy Koch. He's probably not even talking to Buehrle.

Phelps scored on a Stewart sac fly; it's 5-1 after four. Lidle has battled, though he doesn't have great command tonight. Ordonez is now hitting (and slugging) .750 off Cory, with nine singles in 12 career AB, the latest a home-town scoring decision off Bordick's glove on a ball Mike should have caught.

7th inning and Bordick grounds out to 3rd and Hudson scores. Jerry Howarth says "Great job by Bordick to get the runner home from 3rd with less than 2 out"... the score was already 10-1 Jerry!

As far as I'm concerned the man gets far too much credit around here.

If you believe in all that comes with the church of OBP, this is a text book, beautiful game, I love it, and it's not just the 11-1 pounding that's got me happy drunk. Have the Jays swung at a 'ball' all night? As someone who's always been bumbed because Hinske's lefthandedness made made him ripe for a lower batting order slot, i've loved his AB's tonight. Just like '02, a total table-setter, three walks and a ding dong. I love it.

Jerry's become a little crankier in the last couple of years.

What the Jays have going for them right now is that there aren't any holes in the lineup. When one hitter is having an off-day, somebody else steps up.

And Hinske and Phelps still aren't hitting at their 2002 levels. Woah.

It's something common place in the NFL, and I believe when Clemens became a Blue Jay he gave Delgado a nice butt watch in return for Carlos's #21, but come the end of '03 when Lidle hits free-agency, he should take his new found multi-millions and give all the Blue Jays hitters some bling bling just like the runningbacks do for their offensive lineman in the NFL 'cause he's going to make some nice butt cash on a three/four year deal.

Eric!!! What a nice grab and throw. Garth Iorg, thanks for nothing.

I'll tear myself away from a terrific Spurs-Mavs game to say this...

I picked a good day to say that the Jays have the best offense in baseball!

Tonight was this team at its best, taking the offerings from some marginal major leaguers, taking the balls and dispatching the strikes with power to all fields.

Talk about getting carried away... earlier tonight I picked the Jays as my "World Series dark horse" on Primer. Now that is getting carried away with a hot streak.

I was at the game tonight (and I'll be at the game tomorrow night also... wish I could go on Wednesday), and I have to say it was the most fun I've had at a major league ballgame ever. The Jays hitters were FIERCE tonight - it seemed like nearly every count was being run to three balls, balls were being ripped to all fields, and it was surprising when they didn't score a run in an inning.

The game today was a half price game, so I got to sit in the right field box seats, just 20 rows from the field. Great seats! U.S. Corporate Greed Field, while short on character, does have nice sightlines.

My wife, just before Delgado was picked off "He sure seems surprised every time they throw over! Why isn't he paying more attention?" and then he gets picked off - I guess when you can hit like he does, those mental errors are forgiven.

What went on when Manuel was ejected? Sitting behind the Jays dugout, it was hard to make out the details of that play at 3rd. Was a call changed?

Load the bases three times against this team, and they are going to score some runs. In some ways, it's amazing that the Jays didn't score MORe than they did.

The third base ump couldn't decide whether the tag had been made or if the home plate ump had called it a foul. The two umpires conferred. The home plate ump decided that the ball was fair and one or both (though the 3rd base ump didn't have a clear view of the tag) decided that Hinske got Crede going into third.

Manuel wen't ballistic.

It's hard to tell: Crede's foot might have got in but the angle I saw wasn't conclusive.

From what I saw, I thought he was safe but the TV replays weren't great.
Coach - Tuesday, May 20 2003 @ 08:00 AM EDT (#102675) #
The worst thing you can say to an ump (apart from certain hyphenated words) is "you were out of position". Angel Hernandez was concentrating on the fair/foul call, which is the home plate ump's until it crosses the bag, so he was unable to see the tag, which I'm pretty sure was late. He made no call at all, and compounded the mistake with a gesture that meant "I don't know," though it looked a lot like "safe". From 90 feet away, Randy Marsh correctly ruled fair ball, but with the worst possible angle, guessed wrong on the out call when asked for help.

I understand Manuel's frustration; when your team is already a mess, then the breaks go against you, it's easy to snap. Of course, Jerry will be the last to realize he created most of the problems.

It figures Carlos Pena goes off as soon as I trade him in BBFL. He hit something like .190 in his brief sojourn as a Shocker. Grumble....

On a happier note, it's very nice to see the Jays' general resurgence; even though it's coincided with a run through some struggling teams, I still think it's legit. I sincerely doubt they're going to sweep the Yankees, but splitting in New York would mean a great deal after that whitewash of an Opening Week homestand. This offence really is looking scary.

...before 'we' even get to Yankee Stadium, i'm watching to see if lefties Davis and Hendrickson don't get pounded by the Sox's righty dominated lineup, while the hitters face Colon and a struggling lefty, Buehrle. For those who doubt Hendrickson's true effectiveness, of which i've been one, this should be another good indicator of how the heck this guys been getting it done thus far...
