Corey Thurman comes off the DL, New Haven plays to a fleet of empty seats, Dunedin's bats finally come around, and the Alley-Cats get more good pitching.

- Corey Thurman returned from the disabled list with a short but fine outing in the second game of a doubleheader against Richmond. Thurman threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs, one hit and one walk, striking out four. But the Chiefs were swept in the twinbill, 4-1 and 1-0. (Games of May 20, BTW -- there were no International League games last night)

- The Ravens fell 4-1 to Altoona, as Pete Walker got knocked around in another rehab inning. Rich Thompson was the star with three hits and a tumbling, over-the-fence catch in right field. But only 100 fans showed up to see the lame-duck Ravens at Yale Field.

- Dunedin's bats finally woke up in the second half of their own doubleheader. After losing the opener 1-0 to Palm Beach, the D-Jays delivered a 12-3 thrashing in the nightcap, as Mike Snyder doubled twice and homered. The pitching news was all good, however: Dustin McGowan lost the opener but pitched a gem: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 9 K. David Bush followed up with 6 innings of 5-hit, no-run ball, walking nobody and striking out 6. Dustin and David have K'ed 22% and 20%, respectively, of the batters they've faced.

- Charleston lost in 10 innings, 2-1 to Hagerstown. Israel Ramirez threw 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks, but struck out nobody. Miguel Negron's two hits pushed his average to .333, but he still has just that 1 walk in 87 AB.

It's nice to see the minor-league updates coming, Jordan...

Two minor (pardon the pun) notes:

1. According to BA, Dunedin swept that doubleheader. McGowan pitched a shutout and won the first game 1-0, as opposed to losing it by the same score.

2. Also according to BA, it's Ismael Ramirez, not Israel Ramirez. I don't mean to quibble, but these are two names with which one should perhaps be quite careful!

Does anyone know what the average % for K to batters faced is for each league? Just wondering how these guys fared compared to the average.

If I remember well, FSL is around 19%, R Dudek published a well documented article on the subject not long ago.

2002 K per (PA-IW):

American League = 16.42%; National League = 17.43%

International League = 16.65%; Pacific Coast League = 17.91%

Eastern League = 17.43%; Southern League = 18.00%; Texas League 17.33%

California League = 21.01%; Carolina League = 17.79%; Florida State League = 17.75%

I'll be calculating the league averages for the other leagues shortly.

Ah, you see, I cleverly place these errors into my minor-league updates to see if people are paying attention. Yeah. That's the ticket....

Here's a minor league update of a different kind.
Check out this former Jays catcher - Matt Stark. He's now a coach. Although only 37 years old, he looks well past his playing days. At least they're feeding him well.

Stark is a member of International Performance Baseball, the fastest growing athlete development comapny in the United States.

That explains it...

Matt Stark's nickname as a player was "Big Guy" (apparently because that's what he used to call everybody). This seems singularly appropriate now.

Does anyone know why Justin Maureau was bumped from Dunedin's rotation into the pen? Is he recovering from an injury?
