Not the 1930's Cardinals, the 2003 Gorillas. Snellville's club is cruising atop the standings with a 9 1/2 game lead after Week 8 in the Batter's Box Fantasy League. My own Toronto Walrus is back in second (by percentage points) after taking advantage of a meltdown by the Springfield Isotopes. Mike Hansen's team picked a fine week to give up hitting and pitching, while Carlos Delgado and Matt Morris led my motley crew to an 11-1 victory.

There's a possible playoff preview atop the standings this week. Third-place Billie's Bashers are loading up the tranquilizer darts for the Gorillas, and fourth-place Baird Brain is on a Walrus hunt. I notice, looking a bit further over my shoulder, that the Sub-Urban Shockers are in the passing lane, and a 10-2 week for the Chatsworth Halos has moved them above the .500 mark, which in this league, means into contention.

Eight weeks down, 14 to go in the regular season:

In one of my more embarrassing managerial decisions, I dropped Dontrelle Willis after one terrible start (ERA 15.00, WHIP 3.33) and opted for the relative safety of another middle reliever. The 21-year-old lefty proceeded to pitch like Sandy Koufax yesterday, striking out nine in eight shutout innings. If you are wondering, Yahoo won't let you put in a claim on a guy you waived, until he clears, which he did not; Willis is now an Eastern Shore Bird. I'm also concerned that my GM got Sirotka-ed in the Bernie Williams deal. Heads are gonna roll.

The Eastern Shore Birds also capitalized on a big mistake of mine, picking up Bill Mueller after I decided he would never get enough playing time. Thanks, Grady! Luckily I was able to pick up Javy Lopez as a free agent before he went on his current smash the ball streak. Thanks, Javy!
I'm willing to listen to any trade offers, but I am leaning toward the "if it ain't broke" mode right now. Of course, that's with the hope that Billie's Bashers don't break me this week.

The Cannibals are tanking right now- Dave Roberts is on the DL, so my speed is shot, Craig Wilson doesn't hit when he plays, Choi and Overbay have been suffering from restricted PT b/c of injuries and poor play, and Brandon Phillips has been horrible. I've got 3 dl'd players I'd like to keep, expecting Roberts back soon, Burnett by mid-June and Branyan should've been back by now to provide some power. JD Drew should start playing full time soon; that's the one thing that could save me right now. My draft strategy was to grab guys with PT concerns on the cheap and snag some rookies- it obviously hasn't worked. Alex Cora, who I hastily dropped to keep Phillips, came back and bit me this week.

Estaban Loiza has been the anchor of my staff, but other than him, I've had guys sucking left and right. The Shockers killed me this week, but it shouldn't have been that lopsided. I'll listen to offers for anyone, but please make them reasonable.

If I had been more awake I should have picked up Javy Lopez for myself. Piazza's been on the DL all week but my attention has been lax. You can't let up in this league and that alone might cost me this week.

I'd like pitching help. Anyone want Mondesi?

...expecting Roberts back soon, Burnett by mid-June...

I hate to break it to Hannibal's Cannibals, but Burnett is out for this year and probably all of next year.

They're running Burnett back out there mid-June...I doubt he'll pitch consistently, but I haven't read that he's down for the year....

Where did you read that Burnett would pitch in June? This is the most recent information I've seen, and I would be surprised if ESPN didn't report on any further developments.

Thanks. If not for your generosity, my screw-ups earlier in the season would've ruined any chance for the Birds.
