After erasing old whatsisname from one more line of the club record book with his ninth straight win, Harry Leroy Halladay should extend his streak tonight against a team he absolutely owns. How does 4-0 with an ERA of 0.93 sound? That's what Doc did to the Orioles last year, winning twice at Camden Yards and allowing just one earned run there in 14 IP. Batista has a lifetime .125 OBP against him, Conine .200, Gibbons .250, and so on. Some hot hitters may be about to cool off in Maryland.

There's no Shannon Stewart sighting yet, but "Ty" Johnson should be leading off anyway, after his magnificent Sunday, becoming the fourth hitter in 110 years to hit a leadoff HR and a walkoff in the same game. Dave Berg may also be less than 100% healthy, or his "occasional starter" status has been downgraded; Bordick's at 3B again and the O-Dog never rests. The Jays hitters, who held their own against Cubs starters Carlos Tosca called "animals," should enjoy the southpaw stylings of Omar Daal (opponents' AVG .323) for as long as he lasts, then get into a Baltimore bullpen that has a 7.23 ERA over its last 10 games, and has walked 53 batters in its last 121 innings. This could be fun.

Did his parents really name him Harry Halladay? And their fallback position was Leroy? Urgh. Yet another obstacle overcome in his career.

Rain, rain, go away...
_Donkit R.K. - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 07:57 PM EDT (#60041) #
Relatives from away (...Ontario, not away for some of you out there in Da Box) in to watch a game, and, BOOM it rains. What a kick in the teeth that is!
Coach - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 07:58 PM EDT (#60042) #
I turn on the TV to watch Doc operate, and there's (shudder) Boomer. What's up with that? I suppose it's better to have the rain delay at the start than after an inning or two. What's the forecast? Halladay's a good mudder, anyway.

I'm pretty sure Roy and I share a naming convention, where your first name is the same as your father's, but you're not a "junior" -- everyone just uses your middle name. It's good for screening unwanted phone calls; if someone is looking for "Philip," I just tell them it's a wrong number.

Gitz - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 08:08 PM EDT (#60043) #
Fortunately, I have a better way of screening calls: my last name has been pronounced correctly by exactly one person, a college professor in a statistics course who was calling out the role. I was so stunned that he nailed the pronunciation that I didn't even raise a hand or grunt "here" until a friend poked me in the ribs, "Isn't that you?" So, whenever I get a call asking for John (insert butchering of your choice here), I inform them he (me) is not at home.

Three dollars to any member of the ZLC gets it right ...

I'll say GEET-zee.
Craig B - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 08:18 PM EDT (#60045) #
I assume you're Sicilian, so the pronunciation is "Jitzy".

Send my $3 to the nearest food bank, Gitz.

Since it's a rain delay, go check out this site. The advertisement therein is simply stunning, and involves absolutely no CGI.

How about "Geets-tsee"?

Game is postponed. Rescheduled July 3rd.

Sorry guys, I beat you all...Adam Chaleff-Freudenthaler has been distorted in so many ways (spelling and pronounciation), the worst part is that it's all phonetics, no hidden tricks. There are no more than 5 people in the world (outside my family) who can correctly pronounce AND spell my name without holding their hand. Coach still, after four years, won't even attempt my whole name on a scorecard (though that could also be a result of too little space).

On more relavent news, it's come across that the Jays game done for this evening and will be made up on July 3rd as a day-night doubleheader.
_A - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 08:36 PM EDT (#60050) #
My mistake, July 3rd was on off day. So the Jays' next series at Baltimore will be a four game Friday to Monday set. The other consequence of this is that, according to Mike Wilner at the Fan, the good guys are going to have 20 games in a row. Their next day off comes July 7. Try a 4-man rotation on that! =p
_Jordan - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 08:40 PM EDT (#60051) #
Am I correct in thinking this is Toronto's first rainout of the season?
Coach - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 08:44 PM EDT (#60052) #
Since a winner hasn't been declared yet in the "John's name" sweepstakes, I'll go with Gitz-y.

Adam's signature does take up a lot of room on that autographed bat the boys gave me...

BTW, interesting link there Jordan. As a mechanical engineer it brought back memories of the sadistic projects our profs would think up for us. Turns out it's actually not very difficult to transport 5 kg of weights more than 3 m using only the energy you can produce from 2 ordinary mouse trap springs.

Since Gitz is out here on the leftcoast just below lotus land I figure that he'll take his sweet time answering so you easterners will have to stay up late in suspense.

Anyway I'm going with gizzeee

Sorry guys, I beat you all...Adam Chaleff-Freudenthaler has been distorted in so many ways

You need to play professional baseball or hockey, just so I can buy a jersey that says Chaleff-Freudenthaler on it. It'd go great with my Vanbiesbrouck Florida Panthers jersey.

RE: Pronounciation of Gizzi. I have no clue. I'm just going to call you "Kevin Phillips-Bong".

If it were a Turkish name, I'd have no problem with it. I've become an expert at Turkish names and can now pronounce names like Gõkçe and Cagatay.

For those with Rogers Digital Cable, the Anaheim/Seattle game is on Sportsnet Pacific (for some reason it is not blacked out, as previous games were).

Good work, Craig. For clarification, when I spell it out I use

JITSEE

Some get the soft "G," some figure out the double "Z" is like pizza, some get the "y" sound at the end, but Craig and my statistics professor have been the only two to get it. The worst I got was "Bizzle." Still not sure how that happened.

Coach, take the $3 out of my salary, please.
Pistol - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 10:52 PM EDT (#60059) #
One of the bad parts of Extra Innings, besides every game not being on, is that when there's a rain delay they just put up a 'Rain Delay' screen so you have no idea when or if the game will start up again. I assumed the game would start up at any time since the Phillies game was going on and that's about 100 miles away.

Wow.. I wouldn't have guessed that, but now that you explain it, it makes sense.

I'm shocked how often people pronounce my name wrong. I think everyone who isn't Scots/Irish gets it wrong. This weekend somebody called me "Mr. Mofert". Not sure how they got that.

The correct way is the way you'd pronounce former Jay Randy Moffitt's name.

_Craig Burley - Tuesday, June 17 2003 @ 10:59 PM EDT (#60061) #
You'd be shocked at how many people pronounce my last name right... I can't remember the last person to get it wrong. :)

Of course, about 20-25% of people call me "Chris" for no apparent reason, so I have my own nomenclature problems.
_Mick - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 12:42 AM EDT (#60062) #
I'm thinking the "Chris" is an homage to Chris Farley, the eleventh-greatest male cast member to ever appear on "Saturday Night Live."

Sorry I missed out on the Gizzi sweepstakes. I was going to guess it was pronounced "VanLandingham."

I once knew a man -- no joke -- named Harry Bare. Worse yet, he was Harry Bare III and had already named his son Harold IV. Everyone mispronounced his name, too. It usually came out "Harry Ba-you're-kidding-right?")

Most people pronounce my last name, Doherty, as "Dottery." Never could figure that out. It's worse for my mother, Dorothy.
_Cristian - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 01:07 AM EDT (#60063) #
Whenever I see Craig Burley's name I remember the lumberjack named Burley on the Burley brand paper towels as seen on an episode of the Simpsons. That lumberjack was played by an actor named Chad Sexington. Now there's a name!

Speaking of names, I was born Cristian Hernan Rodriguez Villarroel. How's that for a baseball name? I could have probably gotten a baseball contract for the name alone. Somehow I ended up with Cristian Couchot. So my baseball dreams probably ended when my name was changed although I didn't realize it at the time. My complete lack of baseball talent probably hurt my chances too.

Big problems for the Jays and Roy Halladay.

It looks like the entire Orioles-Jays series might be washed out. It would mean 4 days without a game and Doc would, in effect, have one of his turns in the rotation wiped out.
_Brent - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 09:19 AM EDT (#60065) #
Hopefully not Robert. The hourly weather forecast on Weather.com suggests that it might be pretty good baseball weather. Although tomorrow doesn't look too good as they are expecting thundershowers. Hopefuly Halladay can get a start in tonight, and the Jays can get the rotation back in order in Montreal.
Coach - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 09:20 AM EDT (#60066) #
Robert, that is bad news indeed. Doc and Kelvim going on one extra day of rest doesn't bother me, but if it's three or four extra days, their command may not be precise. Halladay's already been idle for a week because of the off day on Monday and the rainout. Cory Lidle's troubles when his routine is altered have been discussed at length. I presume Hendrickson's bumped, at least to the second game of the Montreal series, even if they do play this evening, and Davis will be in the pen until needed.

If tonight's game is postponed, you can almost count on a doubleheader July 6, and if they lose tomorrow's too, the July 7 off-day could make it a six-game series in five days, which would raise some different pitching issues for both clubs.
_Matthew Elmslie - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 11:00 AM EDT (#60067) #
You wouldn't believe how rare it is for people to spell my name right. There's not much variation in how they get 'Matthew' wrong - generally they want to leave out one of the 't's, although I've run into some who want to leave the 'h' out - but there are apparently an infinite number of ways to misspell 'Elmslie'. And they can't pronounce it either; they want to put an H on the front of it and they want to leave out any one (or more) of that knot of consonants in the middle.
_Brent - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 11:55 AM EDT (#60068) #
I guess I'm the minority on this site. You have to have some special talent to screw up a name like Brent Smith.
_Jordan - Wednesday, June 18 2003 @ 01:05 PM EDT (#60069) #
I've been addressed as Gordon, Jordon, Jardan, George and Jordie, but only one group has ever completely screwed up my name. That group, interestingly enough, is the Toronto Blue Jays. When I was at Queen's, I called down to Toronto to book some tickets for an April game at Skydome. The order was filled and the credit card was charged, but the tickets didn't show up. So eventually I called them back to find out what was going on. I gave them my name, but they couldn't find my file. So I gave them my address, and they finally located my order. "Ah, yes, here it is," they said. "Maurice Furlong." To this day, I have no idea how they managed that.

Just call me the Space Cowboy....

The proper pronounciation of Adam's name is;
a) soft "CH" as in Chicago
b) long "A" as in "Cable"
c) accent on the first syllable

This name is derived from the Hebrew word for the knife used in the slaughtering of food animals in the "Kosher" tradition.
