Colby Cosh, Canadian UberBlogger, National Post columnist and Sabermetric devotee, takes up the cause of the Expos. The blocking of Montreal calling up the likes of Terrmel Sludge for the stretch run Cosh calls "the overt, collusive, unapologetic manipulation of a pennant race". Right on! the Expos have been kicked around too much, why not kick back a bit. Cosh suggests a class action suit against Major League Baseball whose plaintiffs would include anyone who bought a ticket to an Expos game, home or away, this year.

I'd join it like a shot. What do the ZLC's legal experts think of the idea ?

Colby Cosh has lots of moxie (it would be uncharitable of me to say he has more moxie than brains... though it's technically true and no slight on his intelligence) but here he goes ridiculously far... right off the rails.

Exactly what does he propose to due them for? You can't matrch into court ans sue someone because you think they're being mean.

MLB delivered exactly what they said they would - a baseball contest - to the holders of every ticket.

It's a shame that MLB won't extend the Expos budget to cover September callups, but they certainly have no obligation to extend Minaya's budget, which they foot the bill for. This one is Omar Minaya's fault, not MLB's... if he had left room in the budget for this, they could have their September callups, and if he wanted Terrmel Sledge he could have had him in April or May instead of Ron Calloway and been better off to boot. If he had traded Fernando Tatis for a bucket of warm spit and paid all but $3-400,000 of his salary, they could have had as many September callups as they could shake a stick at.

Sorry for the typos... that's what happens when you type with a baby in one hand I guess!

I'm not quite sure what the class action suit would claim. I suppose that when a spectator give the Expos money for a ticket, they receive in return a committment from the Expos to try and win. That's probably a bit iffy, though: Every time a team tried to rebuild, they'd be sued by their fans. (Now that I think of it, though, I'm going to get my lawyer to call Gord Ash about Raul Mondesi...) I think the only way you could get any sort of class action suit certified would be if the Expos were purposefully throwing games.

Assuming a really good lawyer could actually make that case, I'd love to see a trial that hinged on the analysis of exactly what Termel Sledge would contribute to the Expos' playoff chances.

Well, the best name in MLB, at the very least.

Maybe the best in the NL; I don't think he beats out Coco Crisp or Rocco Baldelli. I've got quite the fondness for Xavier Nady & Quinton McCracken, too, though that may be just my fetish for unusual letters.
