Congratulations to Billie's Bashers and Nation Builders, who will meet in the two-week championship final. In last week's report, I said, "Our big July deal (he got Giambi and Morris; I got Lowell and Schilling) might come back to haunt me, but I have no regrets."

R Billie won the match 7-4 because he won the trade: compare 4-4-0-.375-.516-.667 from Giambi and 7.0-0-0-2.57-0.71-5.00 from Morris to Lowell being on the DL and Schilling unable to start. A complete game win by Curt would have made the difference for the Walrus, but it wasn't meant to be.

In the other semi-final, the Gashouse Gorillas, who led most of the way in the regular season, were eliminated. The 7-5 margin was extremely close -- Scott took ERA 4.09 to 4.15; considering that's the primary tiebreaking category, Snellville lost the match by .06, or less than a run.

In the consolation bracket, Red Mosquitos defeated the Thunderbirds 9-3, while the Eastern Shore Birds edged Jicks Rays 6-4. Spicol and Greg will battle for two weeks to decide that title. There are also "bronze medal" matches in both tournaments, and I'm even in one of them, but who cares? It's the T-shirt tussle that matters. Best of luck to R Billie and Scott.

This report wasn't late because I was so distraught at being eliminated. Yesterday, something happened that puts fantasy baseball into perspective. The love of my life was in a car accident.

Mrs. Coach, a capable and careful driver, was on Dupont Street, two blocks from home, waiting (with her signal on) to make a left turn, when some distracted idiot ran into her from behind at 50 kph. She's suffering from whiplash-type injuries, but it could have been worse. There were a lot of heavy objects in the back of the station wagon that might have struck her, or her vehicle could have bounced into the oncoming traffic instead of toward the curb. Frequently, on short trips around the neighbourhood, we take our dog, who doesn't wear a seat belt.

So in between eight hours in emergency last night, more trips to the doctor today and calls to insurance companies, we are counting our blessings. My sweetie will need some physiotherapy, but should be fine in a few weeks. The car, which belongs to her understanding employer, can be fixed. By the way, speaking of "could have been worse," the paramedics, tow truck drivers and police all commented that the Subaru Outback is a very sturdy and safe machine. The front end of the other guy's Hyundai was completely crushed.

The Gizzi family -- dogs and all -- echo Spicol's sentiments!

Best wishes Mrs. Coach! Neck injuries are not fun but I'm glad to hear she will be alright.

Well...perhaps I won the trade for one fateful week, but that was more more dumb luck from the injuries to Curt and Mike than anything done right by myself. In fact it's probably the first week where Jason turned in an above average offensive performance for me.

This part of the season is a roll of the dice. Like Billy Beane you can only help your team get there...you can't control how they perform in an arbitrary week.

Pass on my best wishes Coach. Of course, if you are in need of legal advice it appears that half of the Batter's Box is qualified to help you.

Obviously, best wishes.

Baird Brain extracted some meaningless revenge on Mebion, as our hitters finally decided to show up a week late. Wow, fifth place! (I guess the internal memo about losing our bye the last week of the regular season didn't make it to all our players. Matsui, Berkman, Helton and even Tony Batista were apparently all very rested for this week's bashing.)

I hope all's well that ends well for your better half, Coach. Very glad that a worse outcome was avoided.

Get well, Mrs Coach from myself and my family (including our doggie Koufax!) way out here in SoCal. Hopefully all is as well as Kent makes it sound (all things considered) and this unfortunate situation can be a reminder to all of us to cherish our loved ones and every moment.

Sorry to hear that, Coach. I'm thankful everything is close to being all right. Car accidents are so prevalent, yet they don't really enter your consciousness until it happens to you or a loved one. My thoughts go out to you and your wife.

This does not mean, however, that I will take it easy on you in the "Battle for Third Place". :)

Mmmmmmm. Sandwich.

There are "get well" flowers winging their way to Mrs. Coach "from the entire Batter's Box crew" this afternoon by the way.

Yikes. My best wishes to Mrs. Coach and the Coach family.

I can sympathize. About two years ago, I was stopped to make a left turn and was hit from behind by a woman travelling about 40mph (65kph). Lucky for me, she was driving a Ford Escort. My car (a Mazda MX6, paid off three months prior) was destroyed but I walked away from it.

Hey, did I mention the woman's eight-year-old son was riding shotgun, with no seatbelt? Miraculously, he wasn't too badly hurt.

Anyhoo, my Nation Builders won yet another nailbiter after I'd mentally written myself off. It was as close as described above. If the Gorillas had pitched just one more scoreless inning, or if I'd pitched one fewer, my opponent would have won.

Again, here's to a speedy recovery for Mrs. Coach.

You da man, Craig. A beautiful wildflower arrangement just arrived; Leslie was surprised and moved. She thanks everyone for their kind wishes.

This does not mean, however, that I will take it easy on you in the "Battle for Third Place". :)

Snellville, I scoff at your early 10-1 lead. It's no longer a short series, it's a long two weeks.

Since this is a keeper league, it should be alright to discuss this topic for the purposes of our other leagues: Last year, it was pretty standard to see Vlad, ARod and Soriano picked in some combination of 1-2-3. Who are the top 3 picks for 2004 drafts?

ARod? Pujols? Gagne? Helton? Prior? Bonds? Soriano? Someone else?
_Jonny German - Wednesday, September 17 2003 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#14034) #
The top three picks should be Oliver Perez, Nick Johnson, and Melvin Mora. In this league I could be convinced to trade 2 of these 3 players, the best 3 players in baseball, for a hometown favourite like Delgado or Halladay. Why am I making such a generous offer? I have a soft spot for Randy Wolf, Jose Vidro, and Odalis Perez, so I need to make a move to get down to 5 keepers. Contact me at the e-mail address above with any proposals.
Coach - Wednesday, September 17 2003 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#14035) #
Jonny, as Delgado's agent in the BBFL, I can tell you he likes Toronto and refuses to play in a burg like K-Town.

If I had to declare keepers today, they would be Delgado, Schilling, Schmidt, Wagner and Lowell. However, I would consider keeping Orlando Cabrera or Milton Bradley if any of the above aren't 100% healthy next spring. So I'm open to a 2-for-1, like Wagner or Lowell plus Cabrera or Bradley, for one player I like better than both of them. Otherwise, I'll be dumping some nice talent back into the FA pool.

We are working on a league Web page and formal offseason trading rules as I type this. Please stand by.
_AGF - Wednesday, September 17 2003 @ 06:23 PM EDT (#14036) #
Keeping Randy and Ichiro are given (but not untradeable)but the rest will have to come from a pool which includes C. Zambrano, M. Giles, Nevin, Griffey, Patterson, Moyer, and Rivera. That's 7 for 3 spots, not necesarrily because they are all keeper quality but they are pretty even. Let me know which you might be interested in, if any.
_R Billie - Thursday, September 18 2003 @ 12:43 AM EDT (#14037) #
I'm looking for middle infield help so if you'd consider trading me back Marcus Giles I'd be open to that. I might be able to give you back Fossum. What? What are you laughing at?

Seriously, I will consider an outfield for middle infield or third base trade. And I wouldn't mind a front line starter either...I would do a 2 for 1 for the right pitcher.
_Spicol - Thursday, September 25 2003 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#14038) #
This is going to be an anticlimactic finish, don't you think? Scott seems to be well on his way to the shirt.

Ooops, I hope I didn't just jinx you.
Coach - Thursday, September 25 2003 @ 10:45 PM EDT (#14039) #
Only in fantasy ball can a four HR game be "too little, too late," but the Toronto Walrus is still very proud of our first baseman.

The third-place matchup is pretty one-sided -- Snellville's hitting stats: 72-87-7-.328-.397-.595 so far. By comparison, Scott is at 55-46-6-.278-.336-.429, though the Nation Builders' pitching has been sensational.

I have to ask, Spicol. Is winning the Consolation bracket any consolation?

Let's put it this way...nobody bothered to print up any hats or shirts or anything and there won't be any plastic covering my furniture come Sunday, should I be so fortunate as to hang on to this 10-2 lead.
