Here's a link and a shout-out to the absolute best source for statistical data about baseball on the Internet: Baseball Reference. In the best news November has to offer a baseball fan, the 2003 stats are up! A few interesting tidbits from the Blue Jays' point of view:

* Vernon Wells' most similar batter at age 24: Enos Slaughter.
* Carlos Delgado posted an OPS+ of more than 125 for the seventh straight year.
* Roy Halladay made $3.825 million last season. Did we know this? The salary increase he'll get with his long-term contract might be smaller than previously imagined.

Feel free to post your own most intriguing statistical observation about the 2003 Jays. And many thanks to BB-Ref guru Sean Forman for his outstanding contribution to baseball scholarship!

Here's hoping that Josh Phelps turns into something more than Rico Brogna, who is his most similar batter.

How cool is to consider you may be the first person ever to view Vinnie Chulk's Baseball-Reference page?

Aquilino Lopez had an ERA+ of 138 last year. I didn't realise he was quite that good compared to the league average.

Brian Bowles has a career ERA+ of 141.

How exactly do similarity scores work by age, as they compare Doc to Freddy Garcia. However, at age 26 Garcia's train began to derail and he turned into the league average pitcher he is know, and not the very good pitcher he had been since 1999. I thought they compared them to a similar player at that age, but that doesn't seem to be the case for Doc.

* Vernon Wells' most similar batter at age 24: Enos Slaughter.

That's nice that he is compared to a hall of famer. Plus, Slaughter only had 169 career homers, and I think if Vernon stays healthy he'll push his career Slugging way over .500 and hit a lot more than 169.

Rico Brogna? Josh Phelps must be rolling over in his grave.

Thomas: it's explained here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/about/similarity.shtml

Basically the age similarity scores are the same as the career calculation but just taken up to that particular age.
