Baseball's off-field life can sometimes be fairly likened to a circus, and this week is no exception. The Mets did the right thing and fired Bill Singer for acting like an idiot and embarrassing the organization. The Brewers are in far deeper trouble, trying to fire their team president, a highly respected Milwaukee businessman who protested the team's plans to chop payroll to $30M -- a decision that itself has stirred the anger of the local press and politicans. And finally, an alleged rift between Alex Rodriguez and Buck Showalter in Texas has supposedly been exacerbated by the firing of a clubhouse assistant who doubled as A-Rod's valet and personal assistant. Why can't I have a gofer? Here I am doing all my own errands like a chump. (Thanks to Jeff for the A-Rod tip.)

That's a good idea. Gleeman needs a summer job or else he sits around wearing some godawful football jersey, writing 10,000 word opuses on the transcendent beauty of Johan Santana's slider. You should hire him and see how he likes Ottawa. :)

Let me know what you decide to do... if you don't hire him, maybe I'll bring him on as my valet - or "gentleman's personal gentleman" as Jeeves and Wooster called it.

As for A-Rod, boo hoo. A-Rod has two hundred and fifty-two million dollars, I am sure he has room in his household budget for a personal assistant.

After winters in Minnesota, I think Aaaron would find Ottawa positively balmy.

In other off field news, you can purchase the embarrassing...I mean new official (Blue) Jay caps from the team website. This is the first look at the official versions that I've seen, and I don't like them any better. Oh well that what you get when your team doesn't cater to real fans of the game!

Could someone buy me a new, oversized monitor, please?

(Failing that, I guess someone fixing B Luther's link would do.) ;)

Done and done.

Folks, if you want to post a lengthy URL, try inserting it into HTML brackets. Check out Webmonkey's HTML cheat sheets for instructions and codes. And wherever possible, use the "Preview Your Comment" function before posting -- it catches a lot of problems.

A-Rod can hire Mr. French to be his "Gentlemans Gentleman".

Can you see Mr. French cleaning tobacco hork from A-Rod's shoes?

Maybe French could trow him some BP, with some Red Man dripping into his hairy old beard--"Very Good Sir".

Sorry about the link, dudes.

As for the caps, don't they radiate with the spirit, the traditions, and the history of this fine past time?

They're better than the old logo, which reeked of carrots and throwup.

The Jays have never had a tradional logo. Why would they start now?

I actually dig the caps...but I can't, for the life of me, tell the difference between the "home" and "away" versions.
Mike D - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:02 PM EST (#85701) #
And I agree with Moffatt. The Jays have always gone for a pseudo-"futuristic" look. They're not a calligraphy-n-pinstripe team; I think that kind of look would seem ridiculous on the SkyDome carpet. When the new park is built in 2018, then they can go "traditional."
_Spicol - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:05 PM EST (#85702) #
Isn't the home cap blue and the road cap black?
Mike D - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:08 PM EST (#85703) #
You may be right, Spicol. Maybe the contrast on my work computer isn't set properly.

It looks kind of dark grey on mine, so I think it's the picture.
_B Luther - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:09 PM EST (#85705) #
well....the Expos went retro and that seemed to work, and if the Astros used their two normal looking jerseys (instead of also using their 10 other horrible ones) it would work too. The Orioles did it right when they developed the stick bird. So did the M's. The Jays could have at least gone retro 70's!

You have to admit, there is something horribly wrong about the giant sized logo on the hat, and the use of pewter...yes, pewter for the home caps.
_Spicol - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:16 PM EST (#85706) #
Oh, it's pewter...that is a bad picture then.

Won't pewter caps get heavy?

I guess Godfrey Jr. didn't think of that one I guess! By the way, how did he get annointed anyhow??
_coliver - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 01:33 PM EST (#85708) #
I am looking forward to seeing what the Batting Practice caps look like. That is all I buy.
_Cristian - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 02:11 PM EST (#85709) #
I'd prefer if the caps used either the J or the bird. B Luther is right. The logo looks giant-sized on the hat. Oh well, at least the Jays aren't using the god awful Vancouver Canucks jerseys that were dusted off for yesterday's game.

Might be time for a new Hijack thread, the old one's long and getting pushed down the homepage.

So for convenience sake, here's the latest signing: The Seattle Mariners have signed free-agent outfielder Raul Ibanez to a three-year contract, ESPN reports. There are no details on the contract, they will likely come out at a 4pm (Eastern) news conference.
_A - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 02:29 PM EST (#85711) #
Also interesting at ESPN.com is their list of the Top 50 Free Agents. Among their interesting predictions are Worrell to the Jays, I-Rod and Urbina to the Cubs (I love irony), Millwood to the BoSox, K Matusi to the Angels, Mike Cameron to the Mets (I thought they were trying to cut payroll), Escobar to the Rangers (Are they willing to afford another pricy arm?), Juan Gonzalez will apparently sign with the Expos (why now and not before the deadline when he declined the trade?) and Jose Mesa is expected to go back to Houston. Those are some bold and possibly misguided predictions but only time will tell.

Wow, I'm really in the minority today, as I absolutely *love* those 'nucks unis.

I'll admit, though, that I'm a sucker for 70's hockey jerseys.

Too bad the Cincinnati Stingers aren't still around.

_A - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 03:28 PM EST (#85713) #
Don't worry, the Concordia Stingers are.
_Johnny Mack - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 05:25 PM EST (#85714) #
Done and done.

Thanks, Jordan. That's much better. (Do the two 'dones' mean there's a new monitor coming my way?)

Are you nuts? Those jerseys are, without question, the best jerseys the Canucks have ever had.
_Cristian - Wednesday, November 19 2003 @ 07:59 PM EST (#85716) #
That's not saying much.
_Shrike - Thursday, November 20 2003 @ 05:48 PM EST (#85717) #
Heya guys,

Quit dissing my team! ;) Our unis may be of dubious quality, but we're a fantastic team on the ice, thank you very much. So what if we're fashion victims? The Canucks are still going to go far in the playoffs, and look good doing it. None of that trap garbage out here!
