I somehow got the dates mixed up, and thought that the voting was to start on the 15th of February. It turns out it was supposed to end on the 15th of February. Mea culpa. I don't think I've missed any of the propositions, but if I have please let me know, and I'll add them

Coach seconded my proposal that the draft be held the evening of Thursday, April 1 (Yahoo! permitting, of course). I seconded Jurgen's proposal owners be relegated out of the Barfield division as well, being replaced by waiting list people or Carter division people, if such a division comes into existence.

Will voting be done by e-mail, or by posting in this thread?

Careful not to get too close to that edge, the 20 other people on that list might give you the nudge that pushes you over ;-)

Commissar Moffat,

I assume 205(d) is in order of finish (ie the best Barfield team gets to pick first)?

When is the trading window and can you please send out a list of email addresses for each team

Just a reminder that an evening weekday draft is fine but not too early for us in Pacific time (5:30 Pacific would work for me).

Also, as I am new to keeper leagues, I'd like some discussion about why the date to announce keepers should or shouldn't be near draft day (maybe 48 hours prior). Thanks!

As soon as someone notices that Yahoo is open for business, please let Mike know ASAP -- the good draft times are scooped up very quickly.

Brad, declaring keepers early lets everyone else "exclude" them on their Yahoo pre-rankings and gives you a week to rank the remaining free agents. If somebody's keeper gets hurt between the deadline and the draft, that's rotten luck, and they will probably be proposing a future rule change. I'm in another league that does allow last-minute changes, but only in the event of injury.

If anyone is interested in Mike Lowell, Orlando Cabrera, Milton Bradley, Torii Hunter, Francisco Rodriguez, Mark Loretta, Paul LoDuca, David Wells or Carl Pavano as possible keepers, you could acquire any three of them, or even four if you wish, for one player. I am looking for a second-round type in return, preferably a hitter.
_Brad - Friday, February 13 2004 @ 10:51 PM EST (#78525) #
Thanks for the insight, Coach. Makes a lot of sense, though the tentative BBFL schedule has keepers announced a month before draft date which may be too much time???
Next question: How would the $7 be paid if we vote for a Premium league (can each owner send in his own payment or will someone have to pay for the whole league and get reimbursed by each owner?
Coach - Friday, February 13 2004 @ 11:45 PM EST (#78526) #
Article VI of the BBFL constitution says:

All owners must list their keepers on the league message board at least one week prior to the draft. No changes will be permitted after that deadline.

I think Mike's proposed date to declare keepers right after the trading window closes is intended as a courtesy to other owners, and I completely agree with that, but if Jason Schmidt has elbow surgery two weeks before the draft, I'll be making a change. :)

As to the premium service, somebody would have to pay Yahoo and collect from everybody else. Any owner can order Stat Tracker individually, but this is a league deal only, which includes quite a bit more, like the prize.
_Rob - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 12:20 AM EST (#78527) #
I've heard that the BBFL is not for beginners, and I have little experience with fantasy baseball. Would it be in my best interests to wait to join the BBFL until I know more about this type of league? Or is this a "trial-by-fire" situation where I learn a lot even though I will probably finish in last? Again, thanks.
Lucas - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 12:25 AM EST (#78528) #

Seconded, to the extent that you can second a comment.

If the draft takes place 1 April, declared keepers would be locked as of 25 March. Seems reasonable to me. Should anyone want to mention additional or changed keepers in this thread, I'll update the website. (Or I will when I reinstall Dreamweaver, as my motherboard self-immolated last week and I decided to start with a clean drive.)

Keepers are listed here

Rob,

The BBFL owners seem to be a pretty experienced group, but it's not so much the competition as the adjustment to the size of the league.

Most fantasy owners join leagues with 8-12 teams. In those, you can generally ignore middle relievers and mediocre starters, and halfway decent players are almost always available on the waiver wire. In a 20-team league with over 450 players drafted, you have to know about practically everyone. Can Lyle Overbay outperform Carlos Pena? Is Laynce Nix for real? Is Aaron Miles? These are the decisions we'll be making on draft day.

In the BBFL and similarly sized leagues, the waiver wire is a graveyard. There is quality if you're very lucky (I picked up Scott Podsednik) but mostly it's backup catchers, the wrong ends of platoons, and Cesar Izturis. So you can't compensate for mistakes in your draft by picking up a mediocre placeholder like Tino Martinez or Wes Helms. More likely you're looking at Julio Franco.
_R Billie - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 01:56 AM EST (#78531) #
Hey, I gave serious consideration to picking up Cesar at one point. Of course this was after I gave away Giles and Berroa. In my defence I thought I was dropping Geronimo.
_sweat - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 05:22 AM EST (#78532) #
was there a decision as to a second league being formed?
_sweat - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 05:25 AM EST (#78533) #
Sorry, 3 hours sleep(just drove my mom to the airport) does not a smart sweat make. An april 1st draft means that the march 30-31 games tokyo wont be included in the season. any reasoning behind that?
_Spicol - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 10:33 AM EST (#78534) #
Yahoo will include the stats retroactively if we wish.

And I think we do, right?
Coach - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 11:38 AM EST (#78535) #
Yahoo will include the stats retroactively if we wish.

Sure, we'll know how many bases Carl Crawford has stolen after two games, but that shouldn't have a major impact on anyone's draft strategy. I'm in a league that drafts on the first Saturday after Opening Day every year, and it's actually good to know who made the final 25-man rosters.

the waiver wire is a graveyard.

One GM (who shall remain nameless because he's such an idiot) picked up Dontrelle Willis off waivers last year. After his third start, when the D-Train was derailed in three innings, and his ERA was a soaring 7.07, this Branch Rickey-wannabe cut him. The rookie proceeded to throw shutouts in two of his next three starts and was "replaced" by a revolving door of stiffs including Kevin Jarvis.

Since I don't see my name on the waiting list and haven't heard any response from yesterday's e-mail, I must be one of those being 'rejected' by Moffatt's spamware. I'm sure it's just he's scared but I'll throw my name in the hat on a public forum so he can't ignore me anymore!

Mike, COMN if you haven't received my e-mails so I can try and figure out why.
_Rob - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 01:55 PM EST (#78537) #
Thanks for the info, Scott. Despite what I've heard and how much time I will have to devote to the league, I am looking forward to particpating anyway. It should be fun.

That is, if I can get on the waiting list. I'm not listed nor did I receive a reply. I'm going to use NDG's strategy and add myself to the list here, in hopes that I can join the Barfield division.

COMN as well, Mike. I just want to be sure you know I want to be on the list.
_Geoff North - Saturday, February 14 2004 @ 03:47 PM EST (#78538) #
As the big loser in the inaugeral year of the BBFL, I think I can safely say that yeah, this league is tough. I was pretty much a rookie, and felt that way, being clearly outclassed almost the entire season. I do feel that I've learned a lot though, and have hopes of at least not finishing last this year. :P Rookie mistakes I hope to not repeat again? Punting TWO categories entirely... saves and steals. Didn't really mean to, but I did. Ending up with too many 1b/DH types. Blowing my waiver spot early on, on fungible talent. Being too attached to my players to pull the trigger on good trades, and being a lameass and not responding to trade requests in a timely fashion.

That said, I don't think a regular public yahoo league is really good preparation for a league like this. I played in a few of those and did ok, but they are such different experiences as pointed out already in this thread, that they don't develop the skills that are needed in a league this deep. That's also where my bad trade habits developed (though the first few weeks of the BBFL all the trade offers I received were jokes).

One of the main things about this level of difficulty is that it excacerbates the luck you're having - and mine was bad. Mulder went down with a season ending injury, Olerud and Palmeiro had big drop offs in their productivity, Wade Miller was mediocre, and none of my gambles worked out - Giambi was terrible, Contreras took half the season to get the kinks worked out and Ainsworth had a season ending injury. Couple that with rookie mistakes overall and in the draft, and well, it's not too surprising that the season ended as it did.

I have so many questions about this league, I'll just post some of them at once and let the more knowledgable answer them.

What, exactly, is the $7 Premium Service for, and how do we pay it? (All I have is cash, as I'm only 16)

If Alomar last place teams are relegated, what happens to those in the Barfield basement? Replaced by waitlist people?

How long does a draft usually take?

Does anyone really believe Mike has something to do on Valentine's Day? ;)

And, if none of the incoming owners have keepers, do they just draft whoever is left after the original 20 have automatically selected their keepers?

For the third or fourth time, thanks in advance.

I had four people e-mail me telling me that they had mailed me some time ago, and never got a reply. There are 26 (27?) people on the waiting list.

This is enough to give us two more leagues if we really want. I'm suer we can get a league of 20 up and running within a week if we wish.

So, ladies and gentlemen, I propose

BBFL2!

Mike, could you please send the addresses, etc., to me at my work e-mail? I will try to get BBFL2 up and running shortly. Those who do NOT want to be BBFL2 members, and would rather remain on the BBFL waiting list, should be free to do so.

If not too many BBFL waiting listers wish to switch over to BBFL2, we may do an AL-only league with 10 owners. But I think copying the BBFL in every detail is the way to go at first!

Proposition 209 seems a little hasty to me. Let's see how a Barfield division works before contemplating adding a Carter.

We're not going to add a Carter this year, and if the Barfield division is a flop, I doubt we'd even consider doing it. The proposal just gives us a frame of reference if we discuss adding Carter next year.

Mind you, I won't be terribly disappointed if we vote NO on 209. It's a pretty innocuous proposal.

That is a good question. I'm sure we ended up deciding one way, but I can't seem to recall what our decision was. Does anyone remember?

For which teams go down, it won't matter since those teams won't make the playoffs. For the teams that go up, however, it will matter a great deal. At the end of the season this year we ranked the teams based on playoff performance, so I assume that's what we decided to do for next year as well.

Mind you, I won't be terribly disappointed if we vote NO on 209. It's a pretty innocuous proposal.

It was more nocuous as proposed, with relegation happening as long as there's a waiting list, not just if a Carter division is added. The key point of it, either way, is that it makes Barfield owners manage more like the Alomar owners - There's a motivation not to finish at or near the bottom.

At the end of the season this year we ranked the teams based on playoff performance, so I assume that's what we decided to do for next year as well.

I'll shut up if this was already discussed and generally agreed upon (I don't remember either), but I strongly disagree with ranking based on playoffs. The small sample sizes make fantasy playoffs even less true-to-talent than the real world playoffs.

This just occured to me...Don't we need two drafts, since we have 40 managers drafting 25 players? MLB only has 30 teams. Maybe this has already been talked about, but I'm confused.

Do the 20 guys in Alomar draft theirs, and then Barfield drafts its teams separately?

Yep. During the season, the two divisions run completely independently and Alomar teams never play Barfield teams. So I can have Derek Jeter on my Alomar division team, and you could have him on your Barfield division team.

The only time the two divisions interact is at the end of the season, when some teams move up to the A division, and some move down to the B division. That is assuming that there are two divisions, and there is a relegation scheme.

Hope that this clears things up.

On a side note: I've heard from 12 of 20 current owners. If you're one of the 8 owners who hasn't voted, could you please do so. :)

I now realize why the original closing date for voting of Feb 15 was well thought out. The Barfield division doesn't even yet exist to grab a draft slot... And who was the comissioner supposed to be for the B division? Does my memory serve correctly and it is Craig? Perhaps if early returns from the voting show overwhelming support for creating the Barfield division, the commisioner can move forward and get the league signed up.

It takes some navigation to get to the Yahoo fantasy baseball signups. I tried to reserve a draft time, but when I submitted the time it took me to a blank screen.

Not sure if anyone else has any luck with it.

Yahoo leagues are now open.

I'm on it! Thanks so much for the heads up.

I now realize why the original closing date for voting of Feb 15 was well thought out.

Actually, to the best of my knowledge, it's just a coincidence. :)

The Barfield division doesn't even yet exist to grab a draft slot...

We've signed it up the Barfield division, in case we need it. If we don't, we can always abandon it.

Does my memory serve correctly and it is Craig?

We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Perhaps if early returns from the voting show overwhelming support for creating the Barfield division, the commisioner can move forward and get the league signed up.

I'm mum on the results, but we were prepared for the event that Yahoo would open up before the voting was completed. Give me a little credit here. :)

Cheers,

Mike

Pistol: The form doesn't work with IE (with the Google toolbar installed at least). So I took Joe's advice, downloaded FireFox, and it works like a charm!

I love the new interface Yahoo has designed, which seems to be much more robust and functional. They've added a window for split stats, including L/R, Day/Night, Home/Away, Grass/Turf - talk about sweet. They've also added a Can't Cut list, which should "cut" down on some of the problems in public leagues, and at the very least protect against accidental dropping of star players. Another neat feature is the "watch list", which you can select players to keep an eye on.

I also was having problems in IE when selecting a draft time for my own private leagues, but Mozilla worked like a charm. The draft day/time selection applet seems to have some bugs even using Mozilla, but once you've registered a league, changing the day/time works perfectly.

And Mike, the reason I asked about who the Barfield commisioner was, is that I assumed (evidently incorrectly) that it would be the commisioner that needed to register the league. I guess both leagues will be registered with you as commish, but you can carry out the wishes of whoever is chosen as Barfield comissioner (since all those Commisioners tools are only available to you who signed the league up).

Anyhow, I'm pumped - bring on the BBFL (even if I'm the first on the waiting list...)

Actually, you assume correctly.

I'm clever, though, and I found a workaround. For the Barfield division, I created a new Yahoo account, and registered the Barfield account under this new account. If/when Barfield gets a commish, they can have that Yahoo account for themselves.

I told ya, I'm smarter than the average bear. :)

Cheers,

Mike

For an idea of who Yahoo deems "too good to cut", here's their current Can't Cut list, which will be updated throughout they year as need be. Poor Jays get no love... not even Doc on there.

I'll be starting a new thread with all the need-to-know info once I get all the votes in.

VOTING ENDS TONIGHT

There are six of you who still owe me ballots, so try to get them in as soon as possible!

Cheers,

Mike

I believe that draft times for Yahoo fantasy baseball are now available on a first come first serve basis.

Yep. Thanks to David Goodwin, the BBFL got pretty much the first choice of slots. :)
