By a 16-2 margin, current BBFL owners chose to double the size of the league and add a 2nd 20-team division that will start play this season. Eighteen of the twenty current owners voted on all 11 propositions, with one team abstaining, and one person simply not showing up. In a rather close vote, the league decided to have three teams relegated between divisions each season.

Now on to the important information!

What you need to know

  1. The Draft
We have obtained the following draft slots:
    • Alomar Division Thursday, April 1, 9:00PM EST

If you are on the waiting list and would like a team, you have until Monday, February 23, 11:59PM EST to tell me that you'd like a team. You can do that either via e-mail at economics.guide@about.com, or you can just leave a message in this thread. If we have more than 20 respondents, teams will be handed out based on the priority ordering of the waiting list.

...Maybe it's all the not sleeping but I am thoroughly confused by a couple of the proposals that were passed and how they effect the league. Is it possible to have these scribbled down in a less conditional tone?

I'll take a team (I believe I was #17 on the list). Thanks for all the work, Comish :-)

...Maybe it's all the not sleeping but I am thoroughly confused by a couple of the proposals that were passed and how they effect the league.

Here's the Coles notes (Cliff's notes for the Americans) version of the outcome:

  1. You can't change the rules halfway through a season
  2. We have a set timeline for when things happen
  3. We're expanding
  4. 3 teams relegated each year
  5. After relegation 18th Alomar and 1st Barfield owners trade places. So do 19th Alomar and 2nd Barfield, and 20th Alomar and 3rd Barfield
  6. It now costs $7 to play, but we get tons of useful features
  7. At the end of the year Barfield and Alomar owners get to decide what 5 players they'd like to keep for next season
  8. We're adopting the names Alomar and Barfield for the divisions
  9. The worst 3 teams in Barfield will be relegated to Carter division if we decide to create one next year. If we don't create Carter, they're not relegated.
  10. We're having the draft after 9pm.
  11. Relegation is based on regular season standings.

If there's any of those you'd like clarified, let me know. :)

Cheers,

Mike

I'm taking a team in the Barfield Division.

Incidentally, Mike has offered me the post of League President for the Barfield Division and I have accepted. We'll probably confirm that by a vote of owners once the league is filled up.

Mike, thanks for the great work coordinating all of this.

A clarification question: how does paying the $7 fee work? I've done my reading on the Yahoo site and it seems that the commish must fork out $124.95 and then provide us with the League ID and password and we reap the benefits of it being a Plus League. If there's no tax on that fee, that's $6.25 US$ each, which at the current rate of exchange is roughly $8.25. For those of us not able to see you in person, do you take cheques?? And for the Barfield division, will Craig B be administering the collection duties?

Reading the fine print:

If anyone is a resident of Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Vermont, Montana, Louisiana, New Jersey, Arkansas, or Tennessee, you are welcome to play in the Yahoo Plus League, but are ineligible to win a prize.

It doesn't say anything about Canada, and if I remember correctly, someone here in the Box mentioned they received a new Fighting Jays jersey as winner of one of these premium Yahoo leagues last year.

I'll be administering the fee for both divisions. So I'll be paying the fees for both and I'll have everyone mail me cash/cheque/Mattingly rookie cards. If you don't pay in time, I'll send my enforcer after you. :)

Once I've paid the fees, I'll know the exact amount I need to get from each team. It should be a bit less than $7US/$9Cdn.

Sure... he's driving me nuts! He's the most active cat I've ever seen. He loves to run around everywhere and explore and attack everything. Unfortunately he hates the cold, so for the last 2 months he's been doing all of this indoors.

Fortunately my dogs are narcoleptic, so I'm not chasing too many creatures around the house. The fun of living in a place that has more animals than people!

I'm in, and I look forward to winning an Alomar Title by 2007.

The worst 3 teams in Barfield will be relegated to Carter division if we decide to create one next year. If we don't create Carter, they're not relegated.

So if there's a Carter division and 3 teams are relegated from Barfield to Carter, where are the 3 teams coming from to replace the teams leaving Barfield? The waiting list?

I've gotten quite a few requests from people who:

  1. Are on the waiting list and want a team OR
  2. Who are not on the waiting list and would like to be placed on it

I'll get to those requests later tonight, so I haven't forgotten about you.

Also, I can't stress this enough: If I haven't gotten back to you within 48 hours, e-mail me again! Generally I respond within hours, so if you haven't heard from me, chances are I didn't get your e-mail. I received 1,226 pieces of e-mail yesterday, 95% of which was spam. To preserve my sanity, About installed a rather agressive spam filter, and messages to get lost from time to time.

When do we get to chime in with our team names? Seeing as most of us are Jays fans, I figure I should stake my claim on W-A-M-C-O, which I use for all my fantasy baseball teams lest someone beat me to it. I guess names will just be selected as we sign up for the league using the ID and password we are provided with?

Yahoo allows name changes throughout the season, so I'm assuming we'll have a gentleman's agreement not to do that, in light of the deadline for name changes of March 1st according to Moffatt's schedule.

As I read the list, there are only three spots left in Barfield. Is there a deadline for confirmation, Commissioner Mike?
Pepper Moffatt - Thursday, February 19 2004 @ 08:10 PM EST (#78258) #
http://economics.about.com
you have until Monday, February 23, 11:59PM EST to tell me that you'd like a team.

RE: Spots left. From the top 21 on the list, 15 have said Yes, 1 has said No, and I haven't heard from 5 others. Depending on what those 5 do will determine how far down the list we get.

For those who don't get into Barfield, which appears to be a lot more than I anticipated, I encourage you to start up a league. I hilighly recommend using the BBFL rules. They're a ton of fun!

Cheers,

Not expecting to get a team, but my name is also Simon, and I did at one point send you an email requesting to join the league...perhaps there was some confusion with two Simons being on this board, especially since I sent the email a few weeks before I started posting on here. i'm interested to know, and probably would like to be put on the waiting list for next year. I'd very much look forward to competing in a league against Chaleff-Freudenthaler, who was my teammate on Kent's high school team 2 years ago.

If it was in the last couple of weeks, then no, I don't think I have. I don't recall seeing it. There was a couple of e-mails I saved in a BBFL folder and totally forgot to respond to, but that was cleared up a few days ago and I replied to everyone who had an e-mail in there.

I highly recommend that someone start a BBFL type league, because I don't think we're going to get past 21 or 22 on the waiting list.

It's funny, back in November, I was begging for people to join the waiting list. Where was everyone back then?!? :)

I've created an exact replica of the BBFL for all you who will be left out. I'll be playing in it as well.

It's called "The Leftovers". It's league 57444 and the password is dawson. It won't be joining premium, so it's completely free.

So if you want a team in the league, sign up! First come, first serve.

_David Goodwin - Thursday, February 19 2004 @ 09:46 PM EST (#78273) #
Out of curiosity, when will "The Leftovers" league be drafting? I know I personally can't handle 2 of these BBFL type monstrosities, but in case others were interested, perhaps it's worth advertising in a separate thread with the draft day and time.

I assume that "The Leftovers" will have no formal affiliation with the BBFL, in the sense that it does not represent the Carter division, and as such the bottom 3 finishers in Barfield will not be relegated, at least until next year when Carter might come into existence. It might be worth clearing this up, so owners such as Rob Pettapiece don't ask to be removed from the Carter waiting list for next year.

Also, since most of the owners/managers in this new league will likely be Bauxites, perhaps some even playing in the BBFL as well as "The Leftovers" just as Mike will be, perhaps its worth archiving on Scott's site if there aren't bandwidth issues.

Oh, and Mike M, what's the dawson password in reference to? Andre Dawson? Dawson's Creek?

ATTENTION ALOMAR OWNERS!!!

Want to trade?

I'm not happy with my team at this point and I've already made a few trade offers via email. Anyone who dealt with me last year knows that I am always willing to talk about anyone. My roster includes all of these possible keepers:

Josh Beckett, Derrek Lee, Luis Castillo, Wade Miller, Livan Hernandez, Jason Varitek, Edgar Martinez, Ray Durham, Erubial Durazo and Eddie Guardado.

All are available. Teams with few keepers take note - I'm more than willing to trade 3 of my guys for 1 of yours. Gracias.

The Leftovers from what I understand, is going to be a free 20-team Yahoo league right? If that is the case, I'd like to join. It looks like i might even be able to just jog on over to the yahoo site and try to get into it now, i'll try that.

Hey Mike,

I don't see my name on that list. I sent you an email request to join the league a couple weeks ago in reply to your 'yes I'm returning this year to Operation Shutdown' email. Time to reply to 10 messages at once!

I assume that "The Leftovers" will have no formal affiliation with the BBFL

It will have no relationship with the BBFL whatsoever. I just created it because there's a pent up demand to join a league like this, and apparently I was right.

Oh, and Mike M, what's the dawson password in reference to? Andre Dawson? Dawson's Creek?

I'm a diehard Expos fan, so that should answer it. It was either Dawson or Winningham. :)

No worries Dr Z, much appreciated. So that sneaky Moffatt is getting in a practice round before the "real" draft, eh?

Nah, I just don't have a lot of work that week. :)

I don't know how much info I'll get from it, as it's against a different set of players. In the BBFL Coach or Scott Lucas will draft someone and I'll think "Why the heck did he take that guy?!?". Then I'll get absolutely trounced by those players. Coach is on a different level than the rest of us mere mortals, and he *still* didn't win the BBFL last year. That's how tough the Alomar division is.

The Leftovers from what I understand, is going to be a free 20-team Yahoo league right?

Yep.. I encourage everyone to join... It's league 57444 and the password is dawson. Invite your friends and enemies!

I don't see my name on that list. I sent you an email request to join the league a couple weeks ago in reply to your 'yes I'm returning this year to Operation Shutdown' email.

Yep, you did. And yep, I need to add you. Sorry. I'll have to check where you should be slotted, since everyone is put in the order of their initial e-mails, but it'll be around 25th or 26th so you're out of contention this year.

Is the Leftovers league a keeper league?

I don't know if I'll have the time/energy to run this again next year, so I'd assume it won't be.

RE: Barfield. We've got 19 of the slots filled, and I'm waiting to hear back from one guy. That means that if you're not in the Top 22 slots, you won't be getting a team this year. I do encourage everyone who isn't getting a team to sign up for a "Leftovers" team.

Thanks for all your patience everyone,

Mike

Unfortunately you've been eliminated from contention. The last spot is either going to #6, or #22 if #6 says no.

Can anyone tell me the advantages of signing up for Yahoo's Fantasy Baseball Plus as opposed to the free league?
_David Goodwin - Friday, February 20 2004 @ 02:43 PM EST (#78297) #
Nick,

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the differences are:
- You get all the premium add ons, StatTracker being an incredibly useful tool that tracks stats as they accumulate. Others are their wireless access and premium "expert" content.
- The winner of the league gets a plaque worth $30

I recall someone mentioning the league winner receives an MLB jersey, but I don't see mention of that anywhere on the site - perhaps this was cancelled?

So for $9 canadian the plus league is worth it for the stat tracker alone, which is likely why most people voted in favour of it. Also, it's got a higher chance of keeping out the "riff-raff" and making sure people play hard all year.
_snellville jone - Friday, February 20 2004 @ 03:04 PM EST (#78298) #
Yes, it appears that the jersey is no longer a part of the deal. I also feel that the stat-tracker is potentially worth it, but would be willing to conider a re-vote if others felt differently since it was understood that the jersey was the "prize".
_JackFoley - Friday, February 20 2004 @ 03:42 PM EST (#78299) #
