It's no surprise to see Billie's Bashers and gashouse gorillas atop the early leaderboard in what is now called the Alomar Division of the BBFL, but they have company. Chatsworth Halos and hannibal's cannibals share top spot after the first long "week" of head-to-head play. Our defending champion, the renamed Austin Senators, stumbled out of the gate, much like the real Jays, Phillies and Mariners. It is, of course, a long season, and these early results don't mean much.

Here are the Week 1 standings:

 # Team W-L-T WPct GB
1 Billie's Bashers 10-2-0 .833 --
1 Chatsworth Halos 10-2-0 .833 --
1 gashouse gorillas 10-2-0 .833 --
1 hannibal's cannibals 9-1-2 .833 --
5 AGF 9-3-0 .750 1
6 Horse Field Hammers 8-4-0 .667 2
7 K-Town Mashers 7-4-1 .625 2.5
7 Thunderbirds 7-4-1 .625 2.5
9 Baird Brain 7-5-0 .583 3
10 Toronto Walrus 6-5-1 .542 3.5
11 Moscow Rats 5-6-1 .458 4.5
12 Mebion Glyndwr 5-7-0 .417 5
13 Reykjavik Fish Candy 4-7-1 .375 5.5
13 SABR Magicians 4-7-1 .375 5.5
15 Red Mosquitos 4-8-0 .333 6
16 Springfield Isotopes 3-9-0 .250 7
17 Jick’s Rays 2-10-0 .167 8
17 Garces_not_on_roids 2-10-0 .167 8
17 Eastern Shore Birds 2-10-0 .167 8
17 Austin Senators 1-9-2 .167 8

I'm content with the narrowest of wins, after my Walrus trailed the Rats all week. My big boppers started slowly; that was no surprise for Jim Thome, who traditionally takes a while to find the groove and this year, missed most of spring training. LVP Carlos Delgado's .130 .259 .391 line hurts on two fronts -- as a Jays fan, and as his owner. My pitching was better; MVP Curt Schilling's 17.00 K/BB led to a 4.64 mark for the week in that category, which will usually earn a guy a point.

Barfield and Leftovers GMs, I can't post the standings, but this thread is for you too. Maybe more trash will be talked in those leagues; we've been exceedingly polite since the start.

I'd be more than happy to post the Leftovers standings. :)

Feel free to copy this into the text of the post if you want, Coach.

I'm not surprised to see Dr. Zarco's team in second. He had a terrific draft. Burlington is a lot better than they're record showed. They had a bunch of guys who had off weeks, plus Prior is on the DL.

Cheers,

Mike

A good start for the Archivists, as an offensive explosion overcomes some awful pitching performances. That will prove to be the story of our season...

Being a rookie in this format I just discovered today that each category is a win each week. I was thinking that the winner of each week’s matchup got 1 win.

I think the team’s confusion is what got them off to a slow start.

I'm not exactly sure how you managed to do it, Craig. Who on God's Green Earth would have assumed Tom Glavin to throw 7 shutout innings??? You took ERA and WHIP by a combined .12!
_Rob - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 12:20 PM EDT (#72857) #
12-0 Mike? I thought it was "only" 11-0-1. Stolen bases were our tied category all weekend: Stew for me and Adam Dunn for you.

(looking it up) Charles Johnson stole a base for you!?!? Fantasy gods, that's just mean...

Burlington is a lot better than they're record showed. They had a bunch of guys who had off weeks, plus Prior is on the DL.

Dare I mention Russ Ortiz, he of the 23.63 ERA and 3.75 WHIP. Come on, Week 2!

I have an offense this year. Without looking it up, my output this first week tops my best output all last season. Don't think it will hold up, but I'm not carrying any OB/SLG holes the way I was last year. Pitching is an area of concern.

I'm content being the BBFL's Tigers until my team falls apart next week.

I'll have the roto stats posted this evening. I did them this morning but didn't bring them to the office with me. If memory serves, Baird Brain is the roto leader after Week 1.

There was much cursing in the Senator household this week as the Cannibals played well while my team apparently failed to catch the last bus out of Spring Training. Would the rules permit, I might change my team name to "1998 Florida Marlins." Rumour has it my players were upset that I spent the team budget on an engagement ring instead of a new stadium.

I remain confident that my problems are short-term, not systemic. Look out, Fish Boy.
_Shrike - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 01:06 PM EDT (#72861) #
I concur with Craig's observation. The Cyphers managed to take the saves category this week to go with a sweep of the hitting categories. It appears that will be the Cypher modus operandi until someone makes an attractive enough offer of pitching for my surplus in bats.

Not to sound like an idiot (more of an idiot?), but is there a playoff at the end of the year, or does the person with the most "wins" take the title? This is my first effort at a H2H league.
_David Armitage - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 01:59 PM EDT (#72863) #
The Elitists had a solid first week to open the season, although the 8-3 win overshadows the closeness of the victory over WAMCO. Hot starts by Glaus, Choi, Pena, Blalock, and Dye were enough to carry the glaring omission of no SS and 2B Marlon Anderson. Pitching was mixed, with decent outings from L. Hernandez, Miller, and Vazquez. It remains to be seen whether the middle infield and mediocre relief pitching will hold their own over the course of the season.

is there a playoff at the end of the year, or does the person with the most "wins" take the title?

Playoffs, at least in Barfield are scheduled for Weeks 23-25, as well as the consolation championships. I don't have an idea as to how many teams qualify, although I doubt it would be more than 8, and less than 5 given that there are 3 weeks/3 rounds.
_Shrike - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 02:04 PM EDT (#72864) #
David,

Drop me a line. We should be able to do some business.
Coach - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 02:14 PM EDT (#72865) #
The top six teams advance to the postseason, which is the final four weeks of the MLB regular season. #1 and #2 get a bye, then take on the winners of #3-vs.-#6 and #4-vs.-#5. The winners of those semi-finals meet in a two week final.

There's a consolation bracket for the 7th through 12th place teams, and the bottom eight are on the sidelines in September.

Next year's draft order is the inverse of the regular season standings, because as Billy Beane will tell you, anything can happen in the playoffs.
Gitz - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 03:24 PM EDT (#72867) #
Thanks, David. I don't really know why I even asked the question, since I'm going to win in any format. (That ought to satisfy Coach's smack-talking decree.)

A Saturday 9-2 lead turned into a 7-5 squeaker as the Edmonton Deceptions limped to a victory. With every Decepticon hitter mailing it in on Sunday (2 runs/1 rbi of total offence) and Lance Berkman exploding for HOMER JAYS Simpsons, I was lucky to come away with the victory. I really can't complain because overall, luck favoured me this week. I didn't think I could pull off a victory against HOMER JAYS who, in my opinion, had a terrific draft.

The Decepticons' hitting won't get much better until Jose Reyes and Jason Bay get healthy. Also, it would be nice if Jack Cust can find a club who won't sit him in favour of David Segui.

Rumours that the Decepticons attempted to pick up Tony Womack off waivers have been vehemently denied by the club.

MVP: Javy Lopez 1.568 OPS
LVP: Richie Sexson .650 OPS is not good enough for a second round selection.
_Jicks Rays - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 05:38 PM EDT (#72870) #
I'm still pining(whining)for my last years roster. I miss all my old players, that said, DL's Bay and Jordan are killing me and Tejada not getting any rbi's was brutal. Head to head involves alot of skill, but luck sure does play a big part in everything. Did I mention Castro, Crede and Park are available.
_Dr. Zarco - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 05:43 PM EDT (#72872) #
Thanks for the shoutout in the Leftovers Mike! I was rather pleased with the 10-2 score considering Mauer and Nick Johnson are hurt, and I start every week 0-1 due to my complete punting of saves. Week 2 brings an early marquee matchup with WAMCO as two of the top 4 meet.
_R Billie - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 05:52 PM EDT (#72873) #
Good performances by my late round starters made up for three sub-par to terrible performances by Bashers "ace" Mike Mussina. Curt Schilling on the other hand is looking a lot more like the guy I burned a high first round pick on last year.

Jose Acevedo (16th), Cladio Vargas (19th), Ryan Vogelsong (24th), and John Patterson (waivers) each picked up a victory in their first start and combined for 26 innings, 1.38 era, 0.85 whip, 4:1 k/bb. I don't expect they'll continue to give me near ace performances so I'm hoping Mussina turns it around.

The pen was equally strong totaling 19 innings with a 2.37 era and a modest 4 saves. Julio went without a save this week while Kolb and Biddle each picked up a pair. Not selected Mesa when I had the chance late in the draft is looking increasingly dumb.

Ordonez and Ortiz led the offence with 18 rbi and .700+ slugging. Carl Crawford had a big first week with 5 steals which weren't empty (1.003 ops) as Tampa's offence is off to a fast start. Jermaine Dye showed he could be a big value pick (1.037 ops, 6 rbi).

About as good a first week as I could have hoped for given Mussina's struggles. Let's see how long it takes for the young starters to break my heart.
_dp - Monday, April 12 2004 @ 08:08 PM EDT (#72876) #
I couldn't decide on Womack- have #3 waiver right now, and learned my lesson about losing waiver priority in this league. I need the speed, but got burned carrying players only for steals last season, and it wound up impacting my other categories too heavily. Pretty pleased with my offense- I got Beltre and Pena cheap, and they could both have decent years, plus my joke pick of Scutaro in the late rounds might even work out now that Ellis is down for the season.

Pitching is OK- really my hopes are pinned on Webb, Loiaza, Escobar and Glavine, which isn't the greatest position to be in, but they oculd turnout OK with some luck.

As much as I enjoyed the solid week, I could've done without the RBI hit from Bellhorn last night...

Go team Capers ;-)

Most Valuable Player - Mike Cameron: .318/.429/.591 with 5 R, 3 RBI, and 4 (4!) SB. If I could combine Eric Young (.571/.571/.571; 1, 1, 0) and Keith Ginter (.444/.615/.889; 5, 4, 0)into one 18 AB 2B, they (he?) would challenge for this.

FREE GINTER!

Most Valuable Pitcher - Josh Beckett: Wow! 14 IP and a win with 0.64 / 0.71 / 5.00 (ERA, WHIP, K/BB).

Billie's Bashers had the 11th best roto week in BBFL history. SABR, Springfield, K-Town and the Senators all had among the twenty worst weeks ever.

And, FIVE teams had their worst weeks ever: SABR Magicians, Austin Senators, K-Town Maskers, Mebion Glyndwyr, and Baird Brain.

If memory serves, Baird Brain is the roto leader after Week 1.

Uh, memory does not serve. I meant Billie's Bashers. No sarcasm or insult intended, Mr. Brain.

Well, in the Barfield Division I'm sitting in the #1 waiver position, which is essentially useless in mixed leagues. Unless someone plans on dropping Albert Pujols? Please?

Oh, and Jurgen: those rumors about PETCO? Dead on. I caught two of the three weekend games with San Francisco, and, among others, Ryan Klesko murdered three balls -- one to left-center, one to dead-center, and one to right center -- and they simply died. Klesko couldn't believe it; he just kept looking back to the outfield as he skulked back to the dugout, a serious stink-eye directed at the spaciousness. Given the somewhat heavy air of San Diego -- the marine layer effect is similar in San Francisco, Oakland, and, to a lesser degree, Chavez Ravine -- it's likely the park is going to knock down the Padres' hitters quite a bit.

Top Cannibals:

J. Lopez: .545/.630(!)/.773
Beltre: .478/.480/.913
C. Pena: .417/.440/.792

Tom Glavine: 2 W, 13 IP, .92 WHIP (only 1 K/BB; this is Glavine and that's the best ratio I can hope for from him)

Mark Bellhorn hit .100/.379/.250; did steal a base and draw a bunch of BB.

I grabbed Lamb to back up Ensberg, since Jimy Williams is nuts. Anyone know if there is somewhere I can reliably find out which of the two is most likely to start on a given day?

Anyone know if there is somewhere I can reliably find out which of the two is most likely to start on a given day?

I suggest consulting the entrails of a freshly slaughtered goat. This, apparently, is what Jimy is using.

So far, Ensberg has sat against Tomko and Sheets; Lamb played both games and is 3-for-7 meaning that Jimy should be playing him part-time for at least three more months.

I'll give my Barry's to Micheal Young and Aaron Guiel. Both had their share of counting stats and went .320/.333/.560 and .294/.400/.706 respectively.

I have to share my Pedro's also. Tim Hudson's complete game, 4 hit, one run performance was matched only by Dontrelle's 7 2/3, 8K shutout.

I'll give a Neifi to Randall Simon. A hamstring problem prevented him from worsening his .167/.231/.250 clip.

The Lima goes to my boy, John Smoltz. Three outings, three homers. One to Todd Freakin' Hollandsworth that blew a save and a win over the dispised Cubbies.

I'll also add a category: The Cliff Floyd Award. Need I say more?

What day does Yahoo place new players on waivers?
Gitz - Tuesday, April 13 2004 @ 03:48 PM EDT (#72893) #
Cristian, I didn't see your question on Barfield's board -- when you win 10-2 do you really need to bother with what people are saying? -- but there's no set method. Yahoo adds the player when it gets around to it.
