Esteban Loaiza will be a tough nut to crack tonight. Pat Hentgen has been throwing the ball better of late, but will have to locate his pitches exceptionally well to keep the White Sox in check.

That's E-----n L----a, Mr. Dudek ;-)

Here are the starting lineups... Interesting to see Zaun making his Jays debut. He's got tough shoes to fill with Cash hitting the ball hard...

Jays

Clark RF
Catalnatto LF
Wells CF
Delgado 1B
Phelps DH
Hinske 3B
Zaun C
Hudson 2B
Woodward SS

White Sox

Harris 2B
Uribe SS
Ordonez RF
Thomas DH
Lee LF
Konerko 1B
Crede 3B
Perez CF
Olivo C

Anyone else think that Zaun and Woodward should be swapped, with Woody tearing things up as of late?

Shane's post re: Wells, yesterday, needs reiteration:

Vernon Wells is a mess at the plate.

Perhaps the least patient Blue Jays hitter/player (even Hudson and Woodward take far more pitches in '04 than the chosen one) he has to realize how inept his pitch selection judgement is at this point --because there isn't any. Wells takes very little pitches at the best of times, so swinging at most anything they throw you when you are quite plainly going very bad, is somewhat immature. If he can't maintain a focused approach to right his plate appearances ship, perhaps the manager should give him a day off or two to think about it. The AB in the ninth was pathetic. Catalanotto works his ass of for a walk and Wells couldn't be bothered. Somewhere Dusty Baker chews on a toothpick with a smile.

I was hoping for an OF of Cat, Johnson, and Clark tonight. Oh well...

OK, this is my first Rogers telecast (I'm watching on MLB.TV). Why don't they have a score box like everyone else these days?
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#68953) #
A Juan Uribe single and a Frank Thomas double make it 1-0 in the first... down already. Thomas is stranded at 2nd though on a Carlos Lee pop up.

In the top of 1, Jays went quietly 1, 2, 3
_JackFoley - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#68954) #
I don't agree with 'punishing' Wells by benching him at all. He won't start hitting if he's not in the line up and his 215 hits last year have earned him some time to figure out things in game situations, imo. Besides---unless he's hurt, I keep him in the line up for his defense alone.
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:28 PM EDT (#68955) #
Great AB by Delgado leads to a Line Drive home run... Tied 1-1. Back to Even Steven.

And I agree with you Foley about Wells' defense... he may not produce runs, but he sure saves them

Shane's post re: Wells, yesterday, needs reiteration:

Well I think all of that condemnation is just a little bit over the freaking top. Wells is not a selfish player at all. When has he ever been a bad hitter during his career? And this is still early daze in the season. My calander still says April. Shane's opinion is an opinion and its not necessary to reiterate. There are alot of very good hitters hitting below .250 right now. Always are.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:29 PM EDT (#68957) #
Homerun Carlos to tie the game. Nice AB too, I liked his take just off the plate on the 1-2 pitch.

It's stating to rain though.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:31 PM EDT (#68958) #
Not to harp on this, but it really seems like the Jays have been faced with some bad umpiring as of late.

That was a bad Strike three to Hinske, I thought.
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:33 PM EDT (#68959) #
Gameday's saying On-Field Delay... is it a Rain Delay?
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:34 PM EDT (#68960) #
Games still on.
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:34 PM EDT (#68961) #
And of course as soon as I post its gone... is it heavy rain or light drizzle?
_Harry Heatherin - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:35 PM EDT (#68962) #
re. VW: I think he's pressing, yes, but I think with everything else that's been happening to and with the Jays so far this year, taking him out of the 3-hole and/or benching him would be a huge mistake.

Vernon's young and we all know he's likely at any time to go on a 16-for-30 streak with about 30-35 total bases. If you bench him, you might miss the first 5 at bats of one of those twisters.

Let's just let the dough rise. Ooh, what a bad metaphor ...
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:37 PM EDT (#68963) #
Hard to tell on tv, I'd say hard drizzle.
_Steve Z - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:39 PM EDT (#68964) #
Bush has 9 K (1 ER) through six innings in Scranton!
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:39 PM EDT (#68965) #
Its increased to rain.
_Kristian - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:41 PM EDT (#68966) #
Vernon Wells is one of the best players in the Majors period. You do not sit him EVER unless he is injured period. Steve Z, an outfield of Cat, Clark and Johnson??? I hope you are kidding because I don't care if Vernon is scuffling a scuffling Vernon is 100 times better than Clark period. Its early, Vernon Wells is one of the best players in baseball period. He will never be Jason Giambi at taking pitches but I really dont care. I take the good with the bad. Defensively you have a gold glove outfielder so that alone has him playing for me. I respect everyones opinion but I respectfully strongly disagree.
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:43 PM EDT (#68967) #
Huson just made a beauty of a catch after Faulds description he says "Good dog". It didn't have that emphasis of intent. Sounded like just a slip, but a great one.

I'm sorry but that cracked me up.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:47 PM EDT (#68968) #
Here comes the tarp...
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:47 PM EDT (#68969) #
What I would do if I was JP would be to get Doc, Carlos D. and Hinske to take him out for a big New York Steak and pasta. I think that would do it.

Rain delay. But the rain has stopped.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:47 PM EDT (#68970) #
...and the rain stops.

Hahaha, great timing.
_Steve Z - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:56 PM EDT (#68971) #
You do not sit him EVER unless he is injured period.

I'll stand by the comment that Vernon Wells should get a day off, and I don't care if it hurts your defense a little for a day. While Wells might be an elite level defender (which isn't reflected in the metrics) he's certainly not at the the elite level among hitters, yet. Not last year, and obviously not this year.

a scuffling Vernon is 100 times better than Clark period

Have you watched any of the games since Clark was called up?!

While it might not have been tactless for me to repost/rehash someone else's rant, I'll respectfully disagree about Wells' bench-immunity.
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:57 PM EDT (#68972) #
Theoretical Question... let's say its Clark, Johnson and Cat in the Outfield... who gets centre? I give it to Johnson, anyone disagree?
_Steve Z - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:58 PM EDT (#68973) #
"not tactful," of course!
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 08:59 PM EDT (#68974) #
Yeah I would agree with that set up if I was the 03 Detriot Tigers.
_StephenT - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:01 PM EDT (#68975) #
Weather radar maps for Chicago: (closeup) (bigger picture). Looks like it will rain off and on but they might get at least 5 innings in.
_JackFoley - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:01 PM EDT (#68976) #
I think without question Johnson would be the back up CF.

I would also consider Vernon an elite hitter.
Mike Green - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:02 PM EDT (#68977) #
Every player, Vernon Wells included, needs 5-10 games off per season. Personally, I'd let him try to play his way out of the slump, but everyone has a different theory for slump-breaking.
_StephenT - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#68978) #
Elijah, Sportsnet has a scoreline across the top like Fox does. It shows up when watching on cable. I don't know about mlb.tv.
_DGriebeling - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:06 PM EDT (#68979) #
Who needs Kevin Cash when you've got Gregg Zaun?

Way to go!
_Elijah - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:06 PM EDT (#68980) #
OK, it doesn't show up on MLB.TV. Thanks, Stephen.

And how about that Zaun?
_Steve Z - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:10 PM EDT (#68981) #
Zaun lofts a homer! 3-1!

I guess we have differing definitions of an "elite hitter". Although the exact number is quite arbitrary, a 10% BB/AB rate is one of prereq's I'd use.
_Robbie Goldberg - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:12 PM EDT (#68982) #

Fisher Cats win!
_Kristian - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:26 PM EDT (#68986) #
Every player needs a day off, that statement I agree with. We will see how Howie Clark does this year statistically speaking. I have seen him since he has been up but I am a realist to know that Howie Clark cant keep anything close to those numbers up over an extended period. Metrics are obviously overrated because I know Vernon is an elite defender, JP Riccardi who happens to rely on statistics more than most General Managers knows and will agree that Vernon is an elite defender so what is your point?
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:34 PM EDT (#68987) #
And then there were two. The Hab's have just been eliminated. sniff

QUESTION FOR WILNER OR JP:

Can you talk to someone at Rogers about getting the radar gun display back on to the sportsnet broadcasts?
_Lefty - Thursday, April 29 2004 @ 09:42 PM EDT (#68989) #
Tagging Estabum now. Go Jays.
