Much like its Canadian magazine equivalent, the Walrus stumbled a little last week, and the rest of the BBFL's Alomar Divison continued to take advantage. Riding All-Star performances from Mike Sweeney and Michael Barrett, the K-Town Mashers thumped the Walrus 7-4, pulling Coach's squad down and ever closer to the slavering hordes bunched below. One team in particular was the main beneficiary.

On the strength of an 11-1 whipping of previous second-place holder Mebion Glyndwyr, the short-but-sharply-named AGF team vaulted into the silver-medal position, a mere five games behind the Walrus. Led by a 1.602 OPS week from Godzilla Matsui, AGF knocked Mebion down to 6th spot and continued its own recent rise up the standings. The Eastern Shore Birds, riding 4 saves from Matt Herges and a breakout week from Miguel Cabrera, edged Dancin' Homer and the Springfield Isotopes 7-5 to hold on to third place, 8 1/2 games back. Leaping up to fourth position was another hot squad, hannibal's cannibals, which used the Greek God of the High Waiver-Wire Pick, Kevin Youkilis, and BoSox teammate Mark Bellhorn to score a huge 10-1 win over Billie's Bashers, who fell to 11th position. Rounding out the top five was Baird Brain, which held on to the fifth spot despite a 7-5 loss to the Red Mosquitoes.

The week's other big mover was sentimental favourite SABR Magicians (okay, they're my sentiments), whose 9-2 victory over the Horse Field Hammers wasn't nearly as one-sided as it appears. A single walk by someone on my squad gave me a .001 edge in on-base percentage; a last-minute steal by Ichiro Suzuki produced a 6-5 win in steals; and Billy Wagner's injury gave Tim Worrell two fill-in saves, just enough to win that category 2-1. A close shave, but I'll take whatever breaks I can get, particularly since that 9-2 series victory moved the Magicians all the way up to 10th place.

Lots of good matchups this week. The Walrus look to get back on track against defending BBFL champion Austin Senators; both the BBFL and the real Toronto squads desperately need a healthy and productive Carlos Delgado back in their lineups. Eight-place and fourth-place teams square off as the Red Mosquitoes try to take a bite out of hannibal's cannibals. And red-hot AGF puts its second-place position on the line against none other than your friendly neighbourhood SABR Magicians. What's new in the Barfield Division?

Barfield:

Ghost Man on Third has another week at the top of the standings. After 8 weeks there's starting to get a bit of separation between the current top 6 teams and the rest of the field.

Of course that could, and probably will, change quickly.

The Pistol Nine had a strong week going 9-3-0 (although it was much closer than that). MVP this week was Daryl Ward and John Thomson.

I should also hand out my own squad's awards.

Bonds: Why I learned to stop worrying and love the waiver wire: Tony Clark picked up where injured Jason Giambi left off, posting a .360/.414/.600 line with a team-leading 10 RBIs. Very honourable mention to Sean Casey, who went .462/.517/.808 crazy.

Neifi: The same trade that brought me Casey also delivered Adam Kennedy, who went .150/.190/.150 with no runs and two presumably accidental RBIs. Kennedy barely edged out Chad Tracy, who shared in Arizona's brutal week with a .208/.240/.250 line.

Pedro: Easy choice here: John Thomson continued to benefit from the Leo Mazzone Treatment, going 2-0 in 14 IP with a 0.64 ERA and a 9.00 K/BB rate. Close seconds to revitalized Tim Redding, who posted a win and a 2.84 ERA in 12 innings.

Lima: Considering I just picked up Jose himself off the waiver wire, I probably shouldn't even fill out this category. But the recently departed Mike Nakamura managed to post a remarkable 81.00 ERA and 12.00 WHIP in his one disastrous appearance. Mike, it's Lima Time!

Woo! I can't remember the last time I was drubbed quite that badly. I don't think that I can say that anyone was good except for maybe Danny Kolb who contributed a lot of saves. With Giambi and Ordonez down injured and Mussina pitching like Tanyon Sturtze again and many other relievers and starters blowing up good, it was about as sad a week as I've had. It was painful to keep looking at my team each day and seeing two thirds of my players with 0 for 4 and 0 for 5 days. I think David Ortiz went 0 for 6 one day.

There are better times ahead though. Mark Prior struck out 10 in 5.1 innings in AAA yesterday and could actually start a major league game this weekend. I'm hoping to have Ordonez and Giambi back sometime soon as well. Despite a subpar performance for two weeks in a row we're still within 5 games of a playoff spot with most of the season to go. This team just has to start bashing again is all.

Not a bad week in SoCal, all things considered. Congrats to Mike as his Fish Candy had an awesome Sunday to win our series.
Have a safe Memorial Day all! (Is this a holiday in Canada as well?).

That was a great matchup. It's hard to beat a team that goes .332/.390/.451 for the week like the Halos did.

After a tough set of negotiations, the Fish Candy completed a trade with the Halos, where the Candy sent Armando Benitez to Chatsworth and Bartolo Colon made his way to Reykjavik. The Halos attempts at acquiring Tony Batista and the Candy's attempts at grabbing Jeff Weaver have proven less successful so far.

The Capers got back in the win column with a hard fought, back and forth 7-5 victory over 1-Tool Wonders. I was worried on Sunday, but the boys pulled through.

BONDS : I certainly have the record for most ties inc ategories but I simply can't choose between Luis Matos ( 5/3/1/.360/.407/.520) (Good thing my dozens of attempts to trade him didn't work out ;-) ) and Jim Thome (2/4/0/313/.476/.750). Honorable mention to Edgar Renteria for finally making me feel less like a moron having traded Tim Hudson to get him. His rates were atrocious (.200/.273/.200) but he had impressive (for my team) counting stats (5/2/4) and helped me run awya with steals (9-3)

NEIFI: Brad Fullmer, hands down. One of my favorite non-Jays killed me with a horrible 1/1/0/.077/.077/.308 line.

PEDRO: Miguel Batista wins the PEDRO this week though honorable mention goes to the suddenly impressive Doug Davis and his 7.0/0/0/1.29/1.29/1.50 line. El Artista put up 8.0/1/0/2.25/1.00/2.33

LIMA: There's some competition for this one, but I'm giving it to Beckett for his awful start on Sunday making me think that I might have lost the week's matchup. he put up an un-Beckett like line of 8.2/0/0/6.23/1.27/5.00 *and* went on the DL. *dissapointed look*.

The Archivists managed a solid 7-5 win over a Decepticons squad that's still solidly in contention. Nice work, and the very first indication that my team, picked for its big hitting, might actually start slugging the ball. We won five offensive categories handily (surrendering steals as always) and took two good wins in ERA and WHIP on the pitching side.

BONDS : Everybody. When you collect 63 RBI, it's a good week! Gary Sheffield led in runs scored with 7 and RBI with 9 (tied with Andruw Jones) but his .355/.375/.548 figures were bested by three, eight, and six teammates respectively. I'll go with Rafael Palmeiro, who despite medicore R and RBI numbers put up figures of .444/.542/.611.

NEIFI : Nobody, really. I'll go with Julio Lugo, who hit just .150/.182/.300, despite piling up 7 RBI for me.

PEDRO : Rename it the Glavine, folks. Tom's start this week was a 7 5 2 2 2 1 outing against Florida. Bad WHIP, but I won ERA and WHIP partially thanks to Tom.

LIMA : Jason Johnson... 4.2 8 6 6 4 5 at home against Baltimore.

Edmonton Decepticons (Sexless Edition)

Cracks in the Decepticon offence are beginning to show as the Decepticons enter what will undoubtedly be a Richie Sexsonless rest of the year. Craig's Archivists easily pointed out more flaws in the Decepticon game as he easily won every offensive category save saves. Taking 4 out of 6 pitching categories helped the Decepticons make the final tally close. If you've seen the Decepticon pitching staff, you know that they can't be expected to be competitive week in and week out. If there is one word to describe my pitching staff, it would have to be...Ponsoneriffic.

BONDS: The waiver wire wonder twins, Juan Uribe and Kevin Youkilis continue to lead what is left of the Decepticon offence. Maybe next year, I'll just skip the draft.

NEIFI: .125/.250/.250 and 1 run. Is this really what I am to expect now that Jason Bay is back from injury? To top it off, Bay is losing playing time to Rob Mackowiak of all people.

PEDRO: Mark Buerhle. Another dominant start from the burly one. It appears that I've found an ace among the crap pile I drafted.

LIMA: Sidney Ponson. I know this chump isn't very good but I also know he's not this bad. The road to adequacy for Ponson will probably begin this week when I bench him against the Yankees.

I was feeling a little sorry for Garces, thinking it was unfortunate how Peavy got hurt right after our trade... but it seems that he one-upped that by sending me Derek 'Uh-Oh' Lowe. His line today: 5 IP, 8 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks, 0 strikeouts. The bright side is that it looks like he'll go on the DL, so I won't be suckered into letting him pitch for a couple weeks.

Anybody want two hitters in exchange for a starting pitcher?
_Rob Andrew - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 04:03 PM EDT (#15779) #
Even with an 8-2-2 mark, it was a somewhat disappointing week for the Good Sports. Both the hitting and pitching (save UUU) was operating at full cyclinders, but the seemingly managerless Freddy Beach Fracas got huge numbers from their few players. The offensive rate stats for the week were 329/445/545 (Fracas) vs. 345/396/536 (Good Sports). Armando Benitez' four saves also proved to be a nuisance.

Bonds: Jay Payton gets the nod, but there were several strong candidates. As usual, props to Alex Sanchez for hitting a crapload of singles and adding to his impressive caught stealing total.
Leaders: Belliard 2, Payton 1, Clayton 1, Sanchez 1, Bellhorn 1, Ford 1, Podsednik 1

Neifi: Greinke would be mine if I hadn't wasted a waiver priority on Brad Hawpe.
Leaders: Scutaro 2, Hawpe 2, Piazza 1, Clayton 1, Segui 1, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 1

Pedro: I have a man crush on Jason Schmidt.
Leaders: Schmidt 4, Clemens 2.5, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Wilson 0.5

Lima: Ugueth Umberto Urbina, in a walk.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Urbina 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Clemens 1

I fell to a 6-6 tie with Lucas' Senators thanks in large part to Mackowiack going berserker on the Cubbies. Thankfully his pitching was slightly more horrible than mine.

Bonds: Konerko for the second week in a row; .375/.542/.750 with 6 RBI.
Neifi: Broussard's troubles continue, and apparently Michael Young's abilities are adversely proportionate with his distance from the CN tower.
Pedro: Oswalt regains his dominance with a beauty against Chicago; 7IP 3H 1BB 8K.
Lima: Waechter got jobbed by the Yanks and has now given up 6 HRs in his last 11IP. Not to mention 3BBs and no Ks. Grrrr.
_David Armitage - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#15782) #
The Elitists were in for a spanking this week vs. first place Ghost Man On Third but managed to battle for a 6-6 tie. I won the hitting categories 5-1, but lost pitching by the same score. It was only due to weekend signings of Fassero and Bedard that I managed to grab the IP category. 7th place isn't bad, but there's a 7.5 game gap between 6th and myself, not to mention 15 from 1st. On to the awards.

Bonds:Paul Konerko is on fire right now, see Snellville above for the line; special mention to Carlos Pena for a 6/13 week in limited PT, including his 6 for 6 game. Ruben Sierra had a great week too, but he was on the bench for part of it.
Neifi:Jermaine Dye put up a craptastic line of 3/22, 4 runs, 2 rbi, and a .136/.240/.227 to return to his subpar self.

PedroSoon to be renamed the Erik Bedard award given my performances as of late. Bedard wins runner-up this week for his outing yesterday. Pedro has to go to Jason Davis, who was nearly cut earlier in the month. Davis had a solid line of 13.1 0 0 2.02/1.20/2.25 which on this team I'll live with.
LimaEveryone outside of Bedard, Davis, and Marte. Quantrill I guess if I had to give it, for his stellar 0.1 IP, with an ERA of 81.00 and a WHIP of 12.

This week the Elitists hope to move a bit closer to the upper tier vs. 4th place Pistol Nine.
