Paint my love a morning sky, it’s all cold.
Dawn is breaking everywhere, light a candle, curse the glare

It wasn't a commanding victory, but a win is a win. Plus Vernon Wells performance helps my Fish Candy a great deal, so I'm smiling this morning!
  1. How did the Jays manage to pull off a victory with Jason Kershner starting the game and an "expansion level quality" lineup on the field? Find out with Chris Hester's "Wells' homer carries Jays", Jim Street's "Mariners tumble vs. Blue Jays", Geoff Baker's "Big loss overshadows Blue Jays victory", and Mike Ganter's "Power, failure".

  2. Fordin Notes (by Chris Hester). I guess someone told Justin Miller, "C'mon, all the cool kids are doing it", as he's the most recent Jay to jump on the DL bandwagon.

  3. How many Jays will be on the All-Star team? Right now, Delgado is the only position player who shows up on the voting radar, as he's only behind Jason Giambi in AL 1st base votes, according to Spencer Fordin.

  4. Tonight's rubber match features the 3-2 Ted Lilly for the 23-29 Jays vs. the 1-6 Joel Piniero for the 19-32 Mariners. It's a 10:05PM EST start, so if it's another long one, only our west coast and college student readers will see the end of it. Chris Hester has a game preview.

  5. I really wish Stephen Brunt would write more articles on baseball, because his "Delgado is a reminder of how Blue Jays used to do business" is both an absolute must-read and right on the money.

  6. Yesterday we got a report on former Jay Pat Borders in the Star. Today we get Globe reporter Larry Millson's "Olerud is still the same, even if his swing isn't".

  7. Here's a fun one on the Jays most unconventional interviewer: "With `Cabbie,' all's fair: Sportsnet personality can do the impossible: Get athletes to relax on camera" by Chris Zelkovich.

Random Thoughts

The Jays get a lot of press for being a stathead or Moneyball team. But is there a GM in the game who puts more emphasis on getting "quality" guys than J.P. Ricciardi? It seems that in about half the deals he makes he's getting rid of a malcontent and bringing back a guy who is considered a good teammate. He dumped noted headcase Felipe Lopez on the Reds, and brought back Jason Arnold who might be one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He acquired Dave Berg and Mike Bordick, both noted team players, and has held on to Berg despite many thinking Berg has no use on this team. Then there's Raul Mondesi. I think this emphasis on good guys is what sets a J.P. Ricciardi team apart from a Gord Ash team; it's not just adherence to so-called Moneyball strategies and principles.

Watching the game last night I was wondering if the Jays lineup had more players under 6 feet tall than any other team.

Greg Zaun is listed at 5' 10"
Frank Menechino at 5' 8"
Reed Johnson at 5' 10"
Simon Pond is listed at 6' 1" but the listed heights are subject to inflation.

Jason Fraser finished the game at 5' 10". If my Pond suspicions are correct more than half the team on the field were under 6 feet.

I remember looking at the Jays lineup a few years ago and there was only one player on the roster listed under 6 feet. Its the revenge of the little guys.

Maybe that's J.P.'s legacy.

RE: Baseball heights. Subtract two inches for anyone listed at 6'1" or under, and one inch for anyone listed at 6'2" or over, for those of us using standard measuring tapes. :)

To continue on the Phelps thread. When he first came up he seemed to hold his swing to the last possible millisecond and then take a mighty cut at the ball. His swing reminded me a lot of Paul Molitor (without the contact). Now his swing looks far more conventional (at least that's my impression). I also wonder if he isn't having some recurring back problems. Even a small amount of back pain can have a subtle difference on how you do things.

I thought this line was "Paint by number morning sky, looks so phony"... Am I nuts, or is this just more evidence that Moffatt is nuts? I guess another explanation would be multiple versions of the song...

Mucho gracias senior Dudek.

It was not as bad as I had originaly thought. I am surprised we are out drawing the White Sox? Granted the Cubs are in town and E------ L---- is their ace, what excuse do fans have for not showing up? A with long heritage, shiny new park, good team in an easy division. That was a bigger surprise to me than the amazing play of Menechino.

I didnt mean to put a "?" at the end of White Sox, if you read it, it sounds like one weird ass question i'm posing. Brain's not up to full speed yet this morning.

I forgot about the Pirates and their shiny new park. There's another city that should be going out to enjoy more games. The pirates aren't even doing that bad right now so the "horrible team" excuse can't be used yet. Especially in the White Sox case. What the devil's going on in that town?
_Moffatt - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#59797) #
Especially in the White Sox case. What the devil's going on in that town?

Ever been to New Comiskey? The park itself is pretty good (though a bit of a concrete ash tray), but it's in a really crappy part of town. Last time I went to the park, there was nothing in the surrounding area but automobile chop-shops. No bars, no restaurants, nothing. A lot of us complain about the Skydome experience, but given all the quality things there are to do before and after a game, I'd take that over New Comiskey anyday.

Plus the White Sox new "No beating up opposing base coaches" policy has taken away half of their fanbase. :)
_Jobu - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 11:56 AM EDT (#59798) #
Ever been to New Comiskey?

Alas, I have never been to a ballpark outside of T.O. But I am trying to plan my summer trip around making that dream come true. It has to be a city I could get to by bus that wasnt too long a drive. At first my goal was Boston but I quickly realized I'd never get tickets, or could not afford them on my student's budget. Seeing as how I was completly unaware of Comiskey-in-the-slums, can anyone else recommend a good city to go for summer vaction where I can get tickets fairly easily and enjoy the city as well?
_Moffatt - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 12:02 PM EDT (#59799) #
Chicago is still worth going to, as you can go see both the Cubs and the White Sox. I've seen a couple games in New Comiskey and enjoyed myself both times, but I like the Skydome experience better.

I'd recommend Montreal.. you can get cheap tickets and the city itself is terrific. Lots of beer, smoked meat sandwhiches, and cute French-Canadian girls. What could be better than that?

I hear the Jake is really, really good, but I've only seen games at Municipal Stadium. Not the most exciting city in the world, though.

The park in Rochester is beautiful if you're not limiting yourself to major league games. :)

wow, this is good stuff. You guys are better than travel agents. This is alot to mill over. I'd probably drag my non-baseball loving buddies on this trip so the town should have some great fun to offer aside from the park to lure them. Clevland has the RnR HoF and Montreal is Montreal so those are good. Unfortunaltly it would probably rule out some minor leauge towns as much as I'd like to see the game. Chicago and Detroit also seem like good ideas right now. Anyone have any personal experiences for other ballpark visits? And anyone know what the HeftyBag is like?
Thomas - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#59804) #
A couple of buddies and I did Detroit in a day last year. We got down there in less than four hours I believe, taking speed limit signs as suggestions only. It was nice to see the Jays win a game in Comerica, but I can't comment on much in the city besides the ballpark. Nevertheless, it cost us nothing more than tickets, food and a couplf of tanks of gas split four ways. It's a cheap day trip, if you can manage to work it out to get down there and back in a day.

I've done Montreal for a weekend a couple of times, including this year. It's a nice place to go, and that may not be an option much longer.

Montreal does indeed seem like the perfect weekend trip. And i'll definatly have to go some time this year. This summer trip with my fellow rowdy students is aimed at being more a weeklong trip than a day trip. Hence trying to make sure the city wont bore us to tears when im not having the time of life in the ballpark.
_Mrs. Zarco - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 12:49 PM EDT (#59807) #
since Dr. Zarco is currently taking his med school boards, I thought I'd throw a post out there in his honor.

if you're looking for a weeklong trip, chicago should definitely be up there. even though comiskey is in a crappy neighborhood, public transportation literally drops you at the park's doorstep so it's easy to get to any of the bars/restaurants in the city. plus, there's not a bad seat in the new park, and now that they've painted the inside, it doesn't look like such a concrete ashtray anymore.

also, even though cubs tickets are hell to buy in advance, if you go to the ticket window on the day of the game, there's almost always reasonable tickets there that have just been released. wrigley is definitely worth a few extra bucks, although you do run the risk of sitting behind a big concrete pole if you're not careful. and the bar scene around the park is ridiculously fun.

besides, we need some bauxites to come to chicago since we can't make it up for the rowdy times in section 518!
_Jobu - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 12:56 PM EDT (#59808) #
Thanks for the info mrs. Z. You certainly are making a compelling case for Chicago. Jobu, as far as Detroit goes, I'd definately recommend it. Comerica is a beautiful park, and the surrounding area has tons of things to do. Ford Field is right next door, and is actually open to the public to walk around even when there's nothing going on there. Hockeytown Cafe is a block west of the stadium, the Fox and State Theaters are adjacent to Hockeytown, Greektown casino is about 3 blocks south. Going to 'college' in Windsor has its drawbacks, but getting to go Detroit is always fun for a Tigers game. Hopefully I'll be able to catch my first game at the Dome next week, it's been awhile and the Cheer Club sounds way to tempting...

Being encouraged to "sell your city" I'd have to recommend Winnipeg, albeit not necessarily the actual city but the baseball park. If you ever come down this way and want to see some minor league baseball, then come see the Goldeyes of Northern League fame play at CanWest global Park. This is one of the most beautiful parks in minor league baseball. There is not a bad seat in the stadium. I've been to the Atlanta Braves spring training park in Florida wich is beautiful and CanWest Park compares very favourably (on that trip I was able to meet and get Jeff Bagwell's autograph but missed out on an autograph session by Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz at the Braves bullpen...sorely disappointed I was).

No, he lost the no-hit because I mentioned it to my housemate who was watching with me at the time. In fact, I believe Rob Faulds said that Batista was working on a no-hitter, but I said "No hitter? He's working on a f'ing perfect game." Of course it was broken up pretty quickly after that.

My wife and I went down to Windsor last year on Canada Day and took Windsor Transit over to Comerica, a pretty attractive park.
There were quite a few Canadians there and I heard more than a few mutterings about SARS from punks in the stadium. Also, Lurch threw a stinker that night, so the best part of the evening was the park and the bus ride back.
The following morning we went back over for lunch in Greektown, a quick visit to the Greektown casino and a tour of Ford Field, across the street from Comerica.
To me Ford Field is gorgeous for a covered stadium, and the tour was a lot of fun. At the end of the tour you end up on the field, and two young female Lions fans posed for a picture lined up across from each other on the 50-yard line. They tried to look mean for the photo but were cracking up instead.
The tour guide said, "Ladies, there is no laughing in football."
The tour cost $5 and included a coupon woth $5 in the gift shop.

Jobu, I got my tickets for the series in April were $10 US, which was for the upper deck; I sat the whole game down the right field line 5 rows back from the field, with no questioning at all from any ushers. The thing that I noticed there is if you sneak down you pretty much can get any seat location you want, however if you actually show the usher your ticket, he/she will wipe your seat off for you. Aside from that they don't seem to bother much. I also got my glove signed by A Lo. after a game in Sept. 2003, after he responded to my "You should be getting more Rookie of the Year consideration" cry over the the other fans chants.

My guess is also that outside of Toronto and Montreal it's the only other stadium you can buy Canadian beer at the game. A 32 oz. Blue will cost you $7.75 US though.

Jobu, I too live in Chicago - a mere 5 blocks from Wrigley, no less!. A train ride from Chicago to Toronto is about 12 hours and cost $60-65 U.S. (one way) about 16 months ago. I highly recommend the city, even if you can't get into Wrigley, there are plenty of seats available for Sox games and the park is nicer than it was a few years back
_Jobu - Wednesday, June 02 2004 @ 05:19 PM EDT (#59831) #
How'd you sneak into the seats so easily? Did you go to your actual seats first and then wander down mid game and found no one guarding, or did you pull the skydome-special and walked straight for the 100 level concourse after the ticket person scans your upper deck ticket?

Jobu, if you're doing Detroit-Chicago, you might well choose Milwaukee as well, since it's the obvious "next stop" along that route, and has another lovely new park to take in. I haven't been, but generally accounts of both regular Brewer attendees and visitors are very positive.

The other good option is to return via Ohio and upstate New York, and take in a game in Cincinnati or Cleveland.

Yes indeed Craig B, pulling out my grade 7 atlas, I did not know Milwaukee and Chicago are so close (technicaly), it makes good sense to toss that into the loop.

Im tempted to add cinci and/or cleveland, but I dont know if it would be worth it for a one week trip. We'd be in an awful hurry, but more importantly, I have to figure out a cost effective way to travel between all of these cities without renting a car...

Id welcome any ideas or magical spells....

Steal a car?

Seriously, renting a car can be a very good option if you rent a van and then sleep in it. Much more cost-effective then paying for accomodation - if a touch less comfortable. But you're young, right?

Steal a car?

If you met my loser friends (they were at a few cheer club games) you'd know they'd blow my cover before I got to Windsor.

Sorry, didnt see the second post. Yes, I am 20 and apparently to young to rent a car, otherwise it'd be perfect and I wouldnt have to resort to trains, buses and taxis. Damn honour system and yahoo 20 year olds ruining it for the rest of us...

Jobu, I went with 3 friends, we arrived about 30-40 minutes before the game started, and just started walking down towards where we wanted to sit. Most of the ushers are older type people, and my group was all university students, so I figure they assume we'd give them attitude or something if they tried to help us. Not the case at all, but I recommend acting like you know where you're going and you should have a problem. My guess is they're also less likely to ask for a ticket if you have a lot of things in yours hands like food/drinks, camera, glove, etc. (although I've never been asked in the 6 times I've been.) Comerica will let you in at any entrance point regardless of where your tickets are located. If anyone hassels you, you can also play dumb tourist saying "Oh, I'm from Canada, I've never been here before, I was just looking around."

"I'm from Canada.... they think I'm slooooooooow, eh?"

Thanks for the tip Dave. If I get my loser friends to approve and work out a well budgeted travel arrangement, I might just have time to pull it off and take some sweet pics for all too see.

Yes, I am 20 and apparently to young to rent a car

I rented a car a couple times in the US before turning 25 (the last time was in StL in '98). Several companies wouldn't rent to under-25s, but a couple did, with an extra fee (~$10/day, IIRC). My apologies if you have already checked around, but if not, you might want to look into it. (I think I remember renting from National)

Oh, and heading to Montreal, you might want to stop in at Ottawa on the way back. It's a beautiful park, and $9 will get you a seat right behind home plate, right next to the next day's starting pitchers...

I'm hoping to do the Ottawa-Montreal loop myself. I've never been to the Big O but I've been to Ottawa. Great park, I'd love to see it one more time because I think the Lynx will done after this season, along with the Expos. If I'm not mistaken, their PDC deal with Baltimore is up and with 1,400 fans a game showing up, it's no wonder the owner wants to sell. Lynx Stadium is a great park. Well worth the trip and you'll have no problems getting a seat. I wish the Jays would move their Triple A team to Ottawa or better yet, Rochester. I know nothing will happen as they're committed to the 'Cuse until '06.

As far as other parks, Milwaukee is definitely worth visiting and so is Wrigley but you'll be dealing with scalpers over there this season.

Jobu, I admire your enthusiasm to venture off to a far away MLB stadium. I haven't been anywhere except for the DOME, so I can't add to this conversation. However, if your having so much problems accomodating your 'LOSER' friends who don't give a rats ass about baseball, why don't you arrange a trip with just the CHEER club.

That way, you can bring the spirit of the BLUE BIRDS to any city, and gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nuttttttttttttssssssss
_Jobu - Thursday, June 03 2004 @ 12:39 AM EDT (#59847) #
Thanks for the tip George, I'll definatly keep checking now. I just checked some of the larger companies off the bat and they all said no so I figured they'd all be the same.

Snake's got an interesting idea. You drumed up support of Insurrection but you might have met your match now. Anyone interested in Snake's idea?
_George - Thursday, June 03 2004 @ 01:42 AM EDT (#59848) #
Sorry, Jobu, I should've read closer, I didn't notice you said you were 20. I think 21 is often the "magic" age to be allowed to rent a car, for an additional fee. (Looking at National's website, that's their minimum age). Any of your loser friends a tad older than you? :)

Generall speaking, I'd guess that the smaller companies would be more likely to rent to a 21+, or even an 18+ driver.

Jobu, having recently done the whole looking-for-a-place-that-will-rent-a-car-to-my-under-25-self thing, I can tell you that Enterprise is a good bet.
_Moffatt - Thursday, June 03 2004 @ 09:58 AM EDT (#59850) #
Also, in most markets Enterprise is also the cheapest company that is at all reliable. The only downside is that they don't have many Airport locations as the other big players, but that won't be an issue for you.
_Jobu - Thursday, June 03 2004 @ 08:16 PM EDT (#59851) #
Thanks for the tip, you guys are great. I'll definatly keep Enterprise in mind now. Only problem is as this thred gets older and older fewer and fewer people will check so I wont know where to get info then, but I love what im getting so far. Thanks again everyone and dont stop jotting down random advice or city recomendations when you think of them. I think my loser friends are actually warming up to the idea.
_Jobu - Monday, June 07 2004 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#59852) #
ahhh... i knew it. Dead post. Now I gotta get all my info from shifty travel agents! They're so shifty I tell you...
