The short-season affiliates continued their domination of the NYPL and Appy leagues, while the full-season affiliates split 4 nailbiters.

Buffalo 9 Syracuse 7

The Chiefs couldn't hold a 6-2 lead after 5 innings, as the Bisons roared back with 4 runs in the 6th inning and 3 runs in the 7th inning. Starter Mike Smith and Aquilino Lopez were the victims of the Bison offence on this night. Smith surrendered 5 earned runs in 5 plus inning on 5 hits, 2 batters plunked and 6 walks (including the last 3 batters he faced). He struck out one. Lopez came on in the 6th, with the bases loaded and surrendered a grand slam. In the 7th, he gave up 3 runs of his own. Anthony Sanders doubled and homered and drove in 3, while Guillermo Quiroz doubled twice in 4 at-bats. Gabe Gross went 1-3 with 2 walks, and Russ Adams went 1-5 with 2 errors.

Syracuse Post-Standard game story

Trenton 3 New Hampshire 4

Three runs in the first inning gave the Fisher Cats a lead that they never relinquished. Aaron Hill's RBI double and John-ford Griffin's 2 run single were the big hits. Hill went 2-4, while Griffin went 2-3 with a walk. Chris Baker started and went six innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts. Brandon League set up in the 7th and 8th nicely, allowing a run on 2 hits and 2 stolen bases. League walked nobody and struck out 2. For the second game in a row, Jordan DeJong made the home-town fans sweat, loading the bases in the ninth, but induced a groundout to second base to get out of it.

New Hampshire Union Leader game story

Dunedin 6 Clearwater 4

The D-Jays banged out 19 hits, with every member of the lineup contributing 2 or more except for Ron Davenport. Dunedin scored 6 runs despite leaving 13 on base and hitting into a double play. Jayce Tingler and Miguel Negron had 3 hits each, while Davenport went a not-too-shabby 1-4 with a walk. Chad Pleiness had a rare start and went 5 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 2. Andy Torres and Brian Reed held the fort nicely for the next 3 innings, and the score was 6-1 entering the ninth. Bubbie Buzachero continued his struggles by allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, so Tracy Thorpe came on for the final out to get the save.

Box Score

Charleston 5 Hickory 6

It was a painful loss for the Alley-Cats in a see-saw game. The Crawdads scored 2 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd to take the early lead. The Alley-Cats roared back with 4 runs in the 4th. The Crawdads tied up the game at 4 in the 5th. Charleston scored a run in the top of the 7th to regain the lead before Hickory scored the deciding 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. Four of the Hickory runs, including the deciding runs in the 7th were unearned, as Juan Peralta made 3 errors and Jermy Acey one. Peralta, David Smith and Christian Snavely each reached base 3 times, while Eric Arnold had a 2 run single in the Alley-Cats 4th inning rally. Brad Mumma started and went six serviceable innings, giving up 4 runs, 2 earned on 6 hits, 1 batter plunked, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Matt Dalton took the loss, giving up the 2 unearned runs on 3 hits, 1 batter plunked and no walks with 2 strikeouts in 2 innings of work.

Charleston Gazette-Mail game story

Auburn 6 Jamestown 0

Mike McDonald threw 6.1 innings of 4 hit ball, and the DP combo of Ryan Klosterman and Brian Hall swung the big bats for the Doubledays. The Doubledays scored 5 runs in the first 2 innings, and then relaxed. McDonald made it possible by walking nobody and striking out 7. Justin Maureau pitched 1.2 hitless innings, walking 1 and striking out 2, and Jayson Rodriguez contributed by throwing a scoreless ninth. Klosterman homered, doubled and scored 3 runs. Hall drove in 3 with 2 singles. Chip Cannon wore the golden sombrero.

Box Score

Princeton 3 Pulaski 10

The P-Jays scored 6 in the 1st inning and added 4 in the seventh. Once again, Princeton buffed their stats with 3 late runs. Brian Bormaster was the unlikely hitting hero, hitting 2 homers and driving in 5. Jon Chapell doubled and drove in 3. Russ Savickas started and went 5 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Raymon Sanchez, James Pidutti, and Joseph Cherron followed, with only Pidutti being touched for runs.

When are Banks and Rosario next scheduled to start for NH?
Coach - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 11:09 AM EDT (#48737) #
Nice job, Mike. The Toronto travelogue left out Christie Pits, though. Barrie's in town to play the Leafs this afternoon.

I don't want this to come off as a knock against Danny Solano, who has filled in admirably at third since Rob Cosby went down, but if John Hattig goes to New Hampshire, his bat might make a significant difference in the Eastern League pennant race. On the other hand, I'd like to see the Jays' newest prospect challenged by Triple-A pitching this season, and the Fisher Cats are a very good club just as they are.

Snavely really seems to be coming around. His OBP is up to .380 and he's slugging .485 -- tremendous after such a slow start; he's raised that SLG by a whopping 139 points since the end of May.
Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 11:22 AM EDT (#48738) #
Pistol, Banks pitched on Wednesday and Rosario on Friday. The Fisher-Cats have tomorrow off, so Banks will pitch tomorrow or Tuesday and Rosario likely on Wednesday or Thursday.

Thanks, Coach. It's really crowded right now in the Dunedin outfield, with Davenport, Medina, Negron, Tingler and Waugh. At some point this season, one or two will probably be promoted, which will create an opening for the hot bat of Snavely. Alternatively, he may play some first base if Vito is promoted.

Interesting to note that Kurt Isenberg is starting for Charleston and Chris Leonard is starting for Auburn (although he's listed on Auburn *and* Pulaski's rosters).

I guess we'll see.

Hey Coach, who is that 6-8 pitcher for Hamilton ?? Did he play pro ball, his stuff looked pretty good?
_Brian B. - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 12:02 PM EDT (#48741) #
And by the way, does anyone know what kind of stuff Michael MacDonald has?

He seems to be 3-0 and have a 1.41 ERA among other positive stats (29 strikeouts and 6 walks in 38.1 innings).

Geoff, am I missing something? Dalton pitched last night for Charleston. Janssen pitched a couple of days ago for Auburn.

Pistol, if you do go to see Banks and/or Rosario, we'd love to read your impressions.

For those that have seen Adams play, why is he making so many errors?

Is it because of mechanics, nervous, etc?

By the way, Chris Leonard *is* pitching for Auburn - internet radio broadcast on WDWN radio via Syracuse.com.

Big bench clearing brawl in the Auburn game with Auburn leading 8-2.
Aaron Mathews slid into second base on a double play ball and the next thing you know Mathews and the Jamestown Jammers the short stop are hammering on eaching other. Of course everyone else jumps into it and starts throwing each other around.

Aaron Mathews and the Jamestown shortstop are the only ones ejected, but it was pretty wild stuff.

Gustavo Chacin made a nice case for himself as Sean Douglass' replacement in the Syracuse rotation. He moved to 11-2 with a 6 inning stint, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and no walks and 5Ks.

The F-Cats bullpen, after League, DeJong and Ogiltree, is really struggling.

A little BBRadio. Buffalo at Syracuse. We join the game in the top of the seventh, 3-2 Syracuse after 3 Syracuse runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Bob File pitching.

Two outs, Dusty Wathan on 3rd for the Bisons. Jhonny Peralta pops up in foul territory to Julius Matos, and the Bisons' leadoff walk does not score.

3-2 Syracuse at the stretch.
Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 07:57 PM EDT (#48754) #
Bottom of 7 AAA.

Jack Cressend on to pitch for the Bisons.

Russ Adams (1-3 previously) loops a single to right-center. Julius Matos (0-3) grounds into a 4-6-3 DP. Gabe Gross (2-3) flies out to left.

3-2 Syracuse after 7.
Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:06 PM EDT (#48755) #
Top of 8 AAA.

Ryan Ludwick pops up to 2nd baseman Sequea in short center. Ernie Young reaches on an infield hit- Adams makes a good long throw, but first baseman Julius Matos drops the ball. Eric Crozier flies out to Gabe Gross in left. Raul Gonzalez up. Ernie Young takes off from 1st on the hit and run, Sequea heads over to cover. Gonzalez grounds one up the middle. Sequea makes a nice stop and throws Gonzalez out from his knees.

3-2 Syracuse after 7 and 1/2.
Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:13 PM EDT (#48756) #
Bottom of 8 AAA.

Adam Peterson warming.

Glenn Williams (0-3) flies out to right. Howie Clark (1-2 previously) lines a single to center. Anthony Sanders (2 run homer and a bunt single in 3 trips previously) strikes out swinging. Chad Hermansen (infield single and a solo homer previously) runs the count to 2-2, and lines a hit to left, Clark to 2nd. Jorge Sequea (a double in 3 trips)falls behind 0-2, and flies out to center. Peterson coming in for the save.

3-2 Syracuse after 8.

Fasten your seat belts. This is a good test for Peterson.
_Rob - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:19 PM EDT (#48757) #
Hey, I can actually listen to this game!
I'm listening to the Bisons broadcast; the Chiefs one never works for me.

Come on Peterson!
Mike Green - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:35 PM EDT (#48758) #
Top of 9 AAA.

Adam Peterson in.

Our old pal Brent Abernathy up. Abernathy shows bunt and takes a strike. Next pitch, just outside 1-1. Down low, 2-1. Down low, 3-1. Down low (looked pretty good), Abernathy walks.

Dusty Wathan up. First pitch, way outside 1-0. Brad Arnsberg out to the mound. Abernathy goes, the throw from Quiroz tails and Abernathy is safe. Fastball on the outside corner, 1-2. Pitch in the dirt, 2-2. Foul ball. Foul ball off the fists. Foul back. Off-speed up high, 3-2. Foul. Foul. Foul. Quiroz visits the mound. Foul down the 1st base line on a ball up and in on a right-handed hitter. Foul. Peterson's 14th pitch of the at-bat is fouled off. Peterson then plunks Wathan.

Runner on 1st and 2nd, nobody out. Brandon Phillips, hitting .317 up. Phillips shows bunt and takes a ball low. Phillips bunts down the third-base line, and Peterson throws him out. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Left-handed hitter, Clapinski up, and he's intentionally walked.

Bases loaded, 1 out, Jhonny Peralta up. On the first pitch, he lines a single to left, Abernathy scores, Wathan holds at third. Bases still loaded, Ryan Ludwick up. Down low, 1-0, up and in 2-0. Kenny Landreaux out from the dugout and he pulls Peterson for Kershner.

Now there's a rough entry point. Tie game, bases loaded, 1 out, 2-0 count. Kershner's 1st pitch is low, 3-0. Foul ball, 3-1. Up high and Ludwick walks, Wathan scores, bases still loaded, 1 out.

It's now 4-3 Buffalo and I've got to go.
_Rob - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:47 PM EDT (#48759) #
Rob pinch hitting for Mike Green:

Buffalo up 5-3 in the Syracuse ninth.
Two outs, runner on second.
Fagan batting. The count is quickly 0-2. Then: foul ball, foul ball. Chopped to short, Peralta finishes off the Chiefs.

Game over, Buffalo wins and sweeps Syracuse off the board.

Your BBRadio Out Of Town Scoreboard is coming up.
_Rob - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 08:59 PM EDT (#48760) #
Syracuse lost 5-3, as documented above. Buffalo finished off the sweep.

New Hampshire won 9-8, but were up 7-1 after six. Shaky bullpen is right. They beat Trenton.

Dunedin won in 10, 6-4 in Clearwater.

Top of the 7th in Hickory, with Charleston down 3-1.

Also in the top of the 7th, Pulaski is up 2-1 on Princeton.

Auburn didn't square the Jamestown Jammers, but they got close. 12-4 was the score, with 16 hits. Every starter except Aaron Mathews got a hit, probably because he was ejected in the "Big bench clearing brawl".

Thanks guys. This was great. I like "brought to you by cuttlefish". Maybe Batter's Box Radio should be K-CUT, "Cuttlefish radio for Cuttlefish people".

And instead of "D-Jays" and "P-Jays", I think either the high A or rookie affiliates should be renamed "Cuttlefish". Dunedin Cuttlefish, how about it? Or Dunedin Fighting Cuttlefish?

Hey Craig, we're Canucks. The call letters should be CUTL- "playing all cuttlefish all the time".

Well, BBRadio is done by people all over the continent (I think), so technically, CUTL would only apply to one area. Since I'm in Burlington, Craig is in Hamilton (according to the Roster info) and Mike is in Toronto, consider CUTL the name for the GTA flagship of the BBRadio Network.

And, my good friend Mr. Google informs me that CUTL is not taken by any Canadian radio station. How much for a fake broadcasting license? Let's ask the CRTC for that Quebec City one they took away -- I'm sure they would support us!

Cuttlefish have a long and storied history here at Da Box. It's a long story, but there is some significance to our obsession with cuttlefish.
