Just a pointer for everyone to our interview last year with new Jays manager John Gibbons.

If anyone has any advice for Gibby, feel free to talk about it here. I have a feeling that most of you do... :)

My advice is to make decisions and stick to them. Figure out who the leadoff hitter is going to be, who is going to play against what types of pitchers and when, and what roles are to be given to the bullpen. Then stick with your decisions until at least the September callup period. I think the Jays have suffered because of too much tinkering, which makes it harder to prepare for games and do all that funky visualization stuff that's supposed to help athletes succeed.

If you bring a guy out of the bullpen and he looks sharp on that particular day, do not yank him for a statistical matchup when there is nobody on base and he is not yet tired. Not only are you more likely to get bad results, but you're 100 percent guaranteed to kill condfidence in the pen.

Bench a player who makes no effort to use their brain in certain hitting situations. Like not cutting down your swing to try and advance runners with 2 strikes. I've seen this team fail in this situation countless times this year, it's pathetic.

Play Kevin Cash more. There is no point in Zaun playing all the time, nor is there a point in him batting 5th. Bat Cash 9th and put someone pitchers actually have to respect 5th. I don't consider a good singles hitter who can draw a walk very fear-inducing.

And pretty pretty please use the running game to some degree. It is absolutely moronic to not take advantage of this aspect of the game, even at a minimal rate. A major advantage of having runners on base is you can use them to distract the focus of the pitcher. But you don't have that advantage when the pitcher KNOWS you won't run. This advantage can't be measured through stats (the effect from thinking you might run versus knowing you won't), so I assume it has been neglected by the Blue Jays organization.

Good Luck Mr. Gibbons.

Gather the players before today's game and say: "The 2005 season begins today. Put 2004 behind you and focus on a fresh start and a new attitude. Fron now on, every game is a dogfight, every opponent is beatable, and every day at the ballpark should be a good one. Extra batting and fielding practice is mandatory for some, encouraged for everyone. Go out there, play hard, pick each other up, and have fun."

I just noticed this. John Gibbons was born in '62. The Jays have their first Generation X manager! This is historic. Well, for me it is, anyway.

Gibby, whatever you told Frasor during that mound visit, remind him next time before the inning starts.

Congratulations on your first "official" win.

No advice, just a warm welcome and a plaudit for John Gibbons. Expressing confidence in O-Dog and Woodward was an excellent opening, and justly rewarded.
