On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces,
And knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
And if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice."

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner and ev'ry hand's a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

And when he'd finished speakin', he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

I'm not familiar with any Ryan Glynn songs.

Obligatory lineup post:

vs Rogers (L)

R. Johnson lf
O. Hudson 2b
V. Wells cf
C. Delgado 1b
A. Rios rf
F. Menechino 3b
C. Woodward ss
D. Berg dh
G. Quiroz c

Wow, a Dave Berg sighting. His last start was August 26th. He has not started a game at a fielding position since Tosca was manager.

I loved that Ken Huckaby interview on the FAN. He still works for UPS in November and December. "If you're ever in Mesa, Arizona, look for the brown truck and I'll be there in my shorts."

In hockey news, 2-1 Canada.

3-1 Tex.

Is anyone else Noticing that Sailing/hanging motion on Glynn's pitches? Almost as if its a lazy movement right, not a good movement either.

Those lyrics are especially appropriate tonight. Did Pistol know beforehand that THE Kenny Rogers would be at the park?

Who? The First Edition?
_P Smith - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#35724) #
That's two runners easily thrown out at the plate in two days, both newbies. Not sure if Butterfield is overestimating their speed or underestimating the Rangers' throwing arms.

I think that's the farthest I've ever seen Hudson hit a baseball. Tie game.
_P Smith - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#35725) #
Who? The First Edition?

I mean the Man With The Beard. Sportsnet showed him sitting in the stands watching his namesake, who's really struggling.

Rogers and Lilly have very similar deliveries. I kinda feel like I'm watching Lilly throw here. Rogers sure does throw a lot of curves though.

At this exact moment, Alfonso Soriano and Orlando Hudson are sporting identical an identical OPS of .792. It almost goes without saying that the O-Dog is superior in the more important OBP half. And I'm not even going to wait for the UZR ratings to come out, because I know: Orlando is the best fielding second baseman in the American league. He is without peer.

So for anyone on this board who ever suggested trading for Soriano, and there have been a few...Why would you pay him 5+ million a year when we've got an extremely cheap, above average second baseman sitting right here, cheap as hell and enthusiastic about life, the universe and, especially, his forthcoming gold glove award.
_Smack - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 09:55 PM EDT (#35731) #
Exactly, Hudson has hit around .270 his first few years, and his slugging is slowly rising. If he can improve his OBP slightly, he will be a perennial all-star. I remember a few months back when he was in a bad slump, a twins forum was talking about how Hudson was as bad a hitter, and an inferior defender to Rivas since he was slower (citing his SB count). I didnt, bother argueing, had to register, but I hope the league is as ignorant, and we can lock up Hudson for a good 3-5 years, save trouble through arbitration. Guys like him and Reed Johnson are key for a farm system when your top prospects suffer freak injuries and lower morale.
_CaramonLS - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 10:01 PM EDT (#35732) #
You know it is retarded to even put Fredrick on the mound right after Glynn... 2 pitchers with BIG control problems.

At least put someone on who throws strikes.

At least they throw over the middle of the Plate.

Hell WHY would you want show the batters almost the exact same pitcher.

No, he didn't.

It's 5-4 Texas after six.

Tampa Bay won their game against Kay-See, so the Jays must win to not fall behind.

Now, if Frasor can just get out of this one...
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 10:58 PM EDT (#35753) #
Jason Frasor's Gameday picture is quite unflattering.

"Thuuuuuuuhhhh Yankees win", if anyone cares. Tampa won, so the Jays need to win to stay one game back.

Ugh. Did Delgado just blow that? No TV here, but Jerry told me he missed the grounder.
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 10:59 PM EDT (#35754) #
Or not. Once again a Jays pitcher gets ahead but lets up an RBI hit. All the pitchers have been so close to getting out of their jams, but they just can't do it today. 8-7 TX
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 10:59 PM EDT (#35755) #
Great. Two runs score off Frasor. 9-7. I notice the Dellucci "hit" is a hit. So, no mistake by Delgado?
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:00 PM EDT (#35756) #
Pardon my ignorance, but who's in the booth with Jerry?
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:02 PM EDT (#35757) #
God, what next? Frasor tried to throw to first with nobody there. Balked in the tenth run.

Please, somebody else post. I don't want to go four in a row.
_Lefty - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:04 PM EDT (#35758) #
Too bad, Frasor just feels like crap right now. Did you see him pull his btim down over his eyes? I feel for this kid. He's going to need a boost and perhaps more seasoning.
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:04 PM EDT (#35759) #
Glynn pitches the first five innings, and then after that...two runs in the 6th, two runs in the 7th, and three runs in the 8th. Sigh.

Because we're supposed to be optimistic here:

At least the Jays have the big boppers coming up in the ninth.

I'll say a Reed HBP, an O-Dog Walk, a Wells infield single, and then a Delgado grand slam. Then Speier closes out the ninth with the save.

Sound good? ;)
_Ron - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:04 PM EDT (#35760) #
2 run ball game in the 8th and you balk in a run ......

good thing the Jays are bottom feeders and not contending for a playoff spot .... I would have been really tempted to punch the wall after that!

Well that's disappointing. The offense actually comes through late, but the bullpen can't keep them in it. Oh well.

Anyone else hoping the Jays can trade for Mench in the off-season? He would look good at the DH spot.

I usually never say this, but I can't wait until the season is over. Too many heartbreaks to take.

On another note, Francisco Rosario is making me damn excited (in a non-sexual way).
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:21 PM EDT (#35766) #
Rosario and Chacin are rather attractive prospects for 2005. Not to mention McGowan, if he's back early.
But I find it hard to get really excited about three players with a combined 11.2 innings above AA combined among them.

So Rosario and Chacin obviously have thrown their last regular season innings for New Hampshire, right? (I feel like I should be posting in the minor-league thread.)
_Lefty - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:53 PM EDT (#35767) #
Anyone else hoping the Jays can trade for Mench in the off-season? He would look good at the DH spot.

I was actually hoping we could get him at the first trading deadline. Was so bold or dumb enough to predict Batista for Mench.

At the time Mench was in Showalter's dog house. The Rangers were not prepared to part with Nix and their first base propect who's name slips my mind.

Mench would go a very long way to replacing the impending lose of Carlos's slugging.

However, I was heartened to see the anti Delgado signs in thew crowd tonite. One said something like, "America, Delgado, Love it or leave it"

Maybe he'll choose to leave it and stay with the Jays.
_Rob - Saturday, September 11 2004 @ 11:55 PM EDT (#35768) #
Yeah, the anti-Delgado signs were funny. It was Texas, after all.

One said something like, "America, Delgado, Love it or leave it"
Yeah: AMERICA: LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT DELGADO
another said TAKE THIS, DELGADO!
_Ryan Lind - Sunday, September 12 2004 @ 12:05 AM EDT (#35769) #
Yep, that's Texas for you. If you don't love absolutely everything about the USA, you must leave.

Well, that's stereotypical Texas anyways. ;-)
_Ron - Sunday, September 12 2004 @ 12:45 AM EDT (#35770) #
Regarding Mench.......

I would praise JP if he got Mench for Batista.

Heck I would praise JP if he was able to get a decent prospect or young established big leaguer for Batista.

I pray JP shops him around this off-season.
_Lefty - Sunday, September 12 2004 @ 01:05 AM EDT (#35771) #
I pray JP shops him around this off-season.

At the time when I proposed it in the trade predictions thread Batista was actually pitching very well. I thought it to be a very viable call. Now Batista is pitching crap. I don't think you get very much for him now as any GM worth his salt will try to grind Ricciardi down. Therefore Toronto doesn't deal him. Batista just isn't right at this time. Somethings up whether its his back or what I'm not sure. But I am sure he is a much better pitcher than the one we've seen the past 3 or so outtings and miles better than his last.

He's very affordable for next season and he will be just fine starting third in the rotation.

Finally on the Mench thing, I do not see him going anywhere now. He hits for decent average, and and has plenty of power. He might well be the Rangers no. 1 outfielder next season now that he's out of the doghouse and the Nix love affair appears to be coming to an end. His recent performance has clearly outwieghed the notions his injury history. He's a player.
_Lefty - Sunday, September 12 2004 @ 01:06 AM EDT (#35772) #
oops Sorry for the blinding italics thing. First time i screwed that up. Maybe i should be shopped for a decent righty prospect.

We're not all yahoos here in Texas. There's Mick and his wife, and me and my fiance. That's four right there. Maybe a few others.

That's nice of you, Scott. Sandye and I -- particularly I -- have both been called far worse than "yahoo," though. And to slightly edit the idea "Yep, that's Texas for you. If you don't love absolutely everything about the USA, you must leave." ... let me suggest that most Texans with a capital T don't really believe anyone outside of Texas -- certainly not a native Yankee like me! -- is "American." Texas is formerly an independent nation, you know. And don't y
y'all forget it!

Checking in on Mench ... with Brian Jordan starting to hit, I think he could be had in the off-season, but I think Buck and John would want Lilly, not Batista.

I'm not familiar with any Ryan Glynn songs.

Now THIS is a challenge
... so I Googled "Ryan Glynn songs" and discovered Meet Paddy Pillow by Aimee J. Markelz, music and lyrics by James Marklez, narrated by Ryan Glynn, who according to the site, "was 11 at the time of the recording." I couldn't find a copyright date on the recording, but if it was 1985, it could be the ex-Ranger, current-Jay.

Some sample lyrics; maybe Ryan is along just to help the Jays from a morale standpoint:

Happy or Sad,
Grumpy or Glad,
I hug Paddy Pillow,
My new best friend!

Sound advice in this particular Season From He** for Jay fans; hey, maybe the Cheer Club could help everyone get to the offseason with some Ryan Glynn Paddy Pillow signs!
