Today We Have a Contest!

There doesn't appear to be any Jays news today. So instead I'm going to "borrow" a Prediction contest from the Will Carroll Weblog.

Predict The Free Agents Contest

Predict where each of these free agents will end up, how many years their contract will cover, how much they'll get per year (on average). So your answers should be of the form:

Richie Sexson (D-Backs: 3x10)

Where "3" is the number of years and "10" is the average yearly salary.

Rules:
----

  1. Option years don't count for the length of the contract. So guess on the low side for years
  2. We're looking for average yearly salary. No need to indicate if the salary is backweighted or anything like that. For the purposes of this contest, it doesn't matter.
  3. Guess dollars in whole numbers. I'll end up rounding the actual contract figures to the nearest million dollars per year
  4. If you think a player will retire, write (retire)
  5. Two points will be awarded for correct team, one point for correct contract length, and one point for correct dollar amount.

Here's the ballot. Have fun!

Whoever the hairdresser is for the Red Sox (I think his name is Morrissey), they should be set on fire for what they did to Kevin Millar.

D'oh! You got the song right just before I changed it due to some sad news from the music world.

The first song was Hairdresser on Fire by Morrisey. You win 200 million points, a picture of a hairdresser on fire:

and a picture of a Fishercat:

Fine, I'll just have to do a ChinaTown Calculation to find out what the next song is . . . Doug and the Slugs like to eat fishercats, right?

I'm pretty sure that all of these players will sign with the Yankees.

Also, I think a lot of you are seriously undervaluing JD Drew, if he's only going to cost $5-7 million, I would rather have him than Delgado. His OPS was 1.006 last year (in a slight pitchers park).

As bad as this year has been for the Jays, at least the front office isn't publicly disintegrating, as appears to be the case in Miami. COMN for an account of Marlins misery that, even if half true, marks a very unhappy front office (I especially like the alleged "a trained monkey could run this farm system" line). The last time Jeff Loria worked his special inter-personal magic, the Jays ended up with Tony LaCava.

Who is going to keep score? Whoever it is, good luck to you, sir.

I'm seeing a lot of low numbers (especially for Pavano!). That would suggest that the owners/GMs have come to their senses. Knowing in my heart that such a thing is impossible, I present this to you:

Starting pitcher
1. Roger Clemens (HOU: 1x10)
2. Pedro Martinez (LA: 4x14)
3. Carl Pavano (NYY: 5x12)

Relief pitcher
1. Armando Benitez (CLE: 3x6)
2. Troy Percival (DET: 3x5)
3. Jose Mesa (TB: 1x1)

First base
1. Richie Sexson (ARI: 4x9)
2. Carlos Delgado (LA: 4x14)
3. Tino Martinez (TB: 1x1)

Second base
1. Jeff Kent (NYY: 3x8)
2. Miguel Cairo (NYY: 1x1) He's the new Sojo!
3. Tony Womack (PIT: 2x2)

Shortstop
1. Edgar Renteria (STL: 5x12)
2. Orlando Cabrera (BOS: 3x6)
3. Nomar Garciaparra (SEA: 5x12)

Third base
1. Adrian Beltre (LA: 4x8)
2. Troy Glaus (BAL: 3x8)
3. Vinny Castilla (COL: 2x5)

Catcher
1. Jason Varitek (BOS: 3x6)
2. Damian Miller (OAK: 1x2)
3. Mike Matheny (KC: 1x1)

Outfield
1. Carlos Beltran (NYY: 6x15)
2. J.D. Drew (NYM: 4x9)

6. Jeromy Burnitz (COL: 3x6)
7. Jermaine Dye (ATL: 3x5)
8. Richard Hidalgo (STL: 2x5)
9. Juan Gonzalez (NYY: 1x3)

I should point out that I'm prediciting no big Blue Jay signings - not from this list anyway.

I really think the Jays should go after Mike Lowell. The Marlins have less than two weeks to deal him and will not get fair value for him.

Worse case senario, the Jays can't afford to keep him, but they could still trade him for something better than what it cost to get him in the first place.

Jeter would make more sense, but they'll probably move ARod instead.

I'll be collecting all the entries. Will post an update sometime tonight.

Worse case senario, the Jays can't afford to keep him, but they could still trade him for something better than what it cost to get him in the first place.

With Lowell being a veteran player in the middle of a multi-yr contract, he could demand to be traded at the end of 2005. Whatever team signs him will either have to renegotiate the deal, adding more $$ to make Lowell happy or trade him under pressure, pretty much eroding any negotiating stance the team had. I'd rather that the Jays not get into that - it's hard enough managing a team on a tight budget without having to plan around player demands.

Oh, also, I'd like to point out that Julian Tavarez is a hot-head and a weenie.

Julian, when you throw at a guy's head and he stares at you, yelling "What joo looking at!" to him is not an appropriate response. I think it's pretty obvious what Bags was looking at.

That is all.

This is the best sign that Big George has gone off his rocker, and fired Cashman. Replacing Shef with Renteria is the most inspired move since... oh.. getting Mondesi over a dropped fly ball or two.

Good question.

What was the response?
_Jays1fan1 - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 11:52 AM EDT (#26076) #
I was a little disappointed in his response, he blamed injuries as the biggest factor.

He said he tries to teach a good approach to each at bat which will lead to a good OBP. The most important thing is pitch selection, batters should look for their pitch to hit.

Mike Wilner also mentioned that Slg. was an issue for the Jays, and Barnett responded by saying that he felt Hinske was the only player that he was disappointed in last season.

That's a strange response. There was a team-wide loss of power, and a significant change in the ground/air ratio of a number of hitters. The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging its existence.

Barnett responded by saying that he felt Hinske was the only player that he was disappointed in last season

I know Barney isn't going to be comfortable calling people out, but this is a disturbing thing to hear. If Hinske had hit .280/.350/.500, and the Jays had still been last in park-adjusted offensive production (but not quite so far in last), he'd have been jim-dandy?

He was fine with Catalanotto producing a .390 slugging and one home run? Woodward's poor performance didn't faze him? Reed Johnson?

To say nothing of Cash, or even Rios.
_Jays1fan1 - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 12:38 PM EDT (#26086) #
He acknowledged Rio's lack of home run production, but he said he is not worried about him, that the power will come. He said that Rio's is showing all the right signs that he will become a great hitter in this league, reminds him a lot of Magglio Ordonez and Don Mattingly when they first came up.

I personally was surpirsed that the pitching coach was let go, but Barnett kept his job.

Here's a follow-up question to those who've answered. Carlos Beltran is the numero uno free agent according to most here. Most people have him in the $12-$18 million range for 3-5 years. Last year, the numero uno free agent Vladdy received $14 million for 4 years.

With that background, who is the more valuable player and why? Beltran plays a fine centerfield, stays healthy, has more speed and steals bases at a terrific rate. Vladdy is a more consistent and better hitter. In particular he does not uppercut as Beltran does, and so maintains a significantly higher batting average.

Everyone (me included) says Beltran goes to the Evil Empire...SO what becomes of Bernie Williams? Is he a FA?

I think the difference between Beltran and Vlad is that Vlad had questions about his back last year after missing 50 games. Beltran's been pretty healthy his entire career.

(FWIW - Vlad's contract was also for 5 years $70 million, with a team option for a 6th year at $15 million - COMN)
_6-4-3 - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#26102) #
Bernie has one more year at 12 million, followed by a 15 million dollar option / 3.5 million buyout. I think that the assumption is that the Yankees would take him as a sunk cost, or move him to DH.

SO what becomes of Bernie Williams? Is he a FA?

He has at least one more year. He'd be the primary DH I assume (which was part of the plan signing Lofton this year).

Cripes, I can't even remember the details of a contract signing from last year. Thanks, Pistol.

This is a very interesting contest you guys have going on!

Just dropping in to say that there will be no BJADPPGS tonight. Instead, we're going to join the Yankees-Red Sox game in progress at 7:05 Eastern, and carry it to its conclusion, after which we will join the Cards-Astros game in progress.

Happy listening!

All the Beltran to NY guesses are disheartening. Does anyone think any other team has a shot at him? Obviously, this postseason makes it hard for the Astros to not offer him anything. Any other teams stand a chance? Baltimore maybe?

I don't think it matters. What the Yankees want the Yankees get. It's just a matter of how much the price gets driven up by other teams.

Recent draft signee out of community college, Joe Wice is listed as 6'5" 220lbs and left handed. 15 walks, 87 strike outs and 58 hits in just over 84 innings.

Marc, I'm just curious are you saying Pavano is good for 12Mil/year?

Maybe it's a little high (one or two million), but Pavano is the best pitcher on the open market under the age of 30... and there wil no doubt either be a bidding war or someone will come along at the beginning and blow him out of the water. Hence my guess. Do I think he deserves it? No. Would I give it to him? No. Will someone? I think so.

I am shocked that so many people think Sexson will get less money than Carlos.
_DGriebeling - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 03:41 PM EDT (#26118) #
I see a lot of Troy Glaus going to Toronto guesses.... tell me there are others in the "I like Troy, but don't want him to be in a Jays uni next year" crowd? I feel he's an injury risk. Hinske put up crummy numbers last year, but he was one of 2 Blue Jay opening day position players to be untouched by the injury bug.

Would you rather Hinske play 150 games at 3B, with Mennechino or Gomez filling in, or 80-100 by Glaus, and the rest filled in with Mennechino and Gomez?

Put me in the Hinske camp.
_Four Seamer - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 03:45 PM EDT (#26119) #
Interesting that at least a few of the predictions have Jose Mesa returning to Cleveland. Speaking as a fan with Tribe sympathies who has neither forgiven nor forgotten Mesa's starring role in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, I would be seriously surprised if he returned as a free agent. The gorge is rising in my throat just thinking of it...
_Perr Deco - Monday, October 18 2004 @ 03:50 PM EDT (#26120) #
I would rather Frank Mennechino be the starting third baseman than Hinske. Unfortunately it's gotten to that point.

That being said, I don't think Troy Glaus meets the risk vs. reward requirement of a small budget team.

Wilner made some pretty bad picks for who would win the divisions this year. Something like:

Cubs
Philly
San Diego
Seattle
Boston
Royals

Not to mention his Blue Jay prediction or his continued faith that Boston WILL win the World Series. So I have faith that even if he posted his predictions, he wouldn't be taking home the prize :)

Hypothetical question: How much money has Carlos Beltran made since the post-season began? I.E. What would be the difference between the contract he is now going to get and the one he would have gotten if the Astros had not made the playoffs?

I'm guestimating 15-20 million.

Well, I copied Mike Green's post so I'd have a template to start from

Re-use is encouraged in the City of Toronto. Less mess, less smell. Anyways, I re-used R. Billie's template.

Scott Boras, by the way, has apparently said that the bidding on Beltran starts at $20 million a year

Tonight we're going to party like it's 1999. And what precisely does he intend to do if no one goes higher than 12?

That being said, I don't think Troy Glaus meets the risk vs. reward requirement of a small budget team.

He *exactly* meets that requirement.

Small budget teams need to take MORE risk than large budget teams. Not less.

Top Prospects Arizona Fall League Report on Jays prospect Vito C.

Leading the slugfests:

COMN for story.

It took me the first week just to learn how to spell his last name and the season's second week to figure out how to pronounce it.
