Okay, if you don't watch Charmed, you don't get the headline reference. No big deal. Anyway, with Edgar Renteria signing with the Red Sox for approximately seven billion dollars over thirty-five years, it brings to mind the fact that not long ago, there was a clear and obvious "Holy Trinity" of shortstops -- A-Rod, Nomar and Jeter, probably in that order. With that no longer the case, here's today's ...

Question of the Day: What is the current top trio of shortstops? Without regard to a limiting number like three, who are the best shortstops in the game today, and in what order? What will the new top trio be in 2008? At that time, what, if any, new names will we need to add to Mike Green's Hall Watch: The Shortstops feature?

COMN for jobs at MLB jobs at Skydome. I figure I'm out of the running since I live 4000km from Skydome.

Oh yeah, QOTD answer: Tejada, Jeter, Carlos Guillen
_Mick - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 10:05 AM EST (#8659) #
Guillen over Renteria and Cabrera? Really?
_Jonny German - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 10:39 AM EST (#8660) #
Without fully looking into it, I'm not so sure I'd put Cabrera in the Top 10. Very overrated, even before his one big season.

COMN for jobs at MLB jobs at Skydome.

There are similar Monster postings for all 30 teams. My sense is that someone is compiling resumes and that most, if not all of those positions are already filled by very capable people. I have offered many times to change jobs with SF, but so far, he has declined.

What is the current top trio of shortstops?

Straight draft, no salary considerations, I'll take A-Rod, Tejada and Jeter in that order.

I agree with Coach's picks. Just because Arod doesn't play SS anymore doesn't mean he's not still better than anyone else.

As for three years from now, I'll pick BJ Upton, Khalil Greene and Arod.

QOTD:
In no particular order, top 3 SS today would be Nomar (I guess, no more Nomah), A-Rod, and Tejada.
In 2008, I'd go with A-Rod, Hanley Ramirez, and Khalil Greene.
Mike Green - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 11:18 AM EST (#8664) #
Current: A-Rod, Tejada and C. Guillen.
3-years from now: A-Rod, Khalil Greene and Tejada (BJ Upton will move to third, I think, and we won't ever really know whether he would have developed into an adequate shortstop).

With respect to Jeter, after spending more time with his defensive stats from 1995 on in the last couple of weeks, I am satisfied that last year's defensive stats were an anomaly. He is just a significantly below average defensive shortstop, always has been and he's not getting better. For comparison sake, he has always been a poorer defensive shortstop than Woodward. He'd be my 5th choice now (he's still behind Nomar, as well as the others).

35 years - sounds like Renteria either has a really good agent, or he's about 20 years younger than listed :P
_Cristian - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 11:23 AM EST (#8666) #
No love for Carlos Guillen? I traded for him early in the BBFL season and he went on to have a great year for me. So I guess I have a soft spot for him. Although objectively, he had a better 2004 than Renteria, Tejada, or Jeter.
_Hamboy - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 12:14 PM EST (#8667) #
No love for Carlos Guillen...
Before 2004 season, guy never slugged over .400, and he move to Detroit and slug over .500? I think last season was an abberration, unlikely to be repeated. But I could be wrong... I've been known to be wrong...
Coach - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 12:21 PM EST (#8668) #
I would probably pick Guillen over Jeter a year from now if his knee is OK and he proves he can hit that well again. Carlos was the better player in 2004, but for 2005, I slightly prefer Derek. There's a considerable gap for me between Tejada and the very talented guys closely bunched for third, including Garciaparra and Renteria.

Royce Clayton was my SS in BBFL, with Ronnie Belliard at 2B, because I simply won't use a high draft pick (nor would I pay eight figures per season) for any middle infielder. :)
_Mick - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 12:37 PM EST (#8669) #
If he stays at shortstop, which is no guarantee, I think you have to mention Mike Young in that "group just behind" and maybe as one of the top three in a few years.
robertdudek - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 01:32 PM EST (#8670) #
A-Rod, Tejada and Jeter as of this minute.
_Lee - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 01:48 PM EST (#8671) #
Current top three: Jeter, Jeter, and Jeter. As a great believer in intangibles, I put him in a class by himself. If I had to pick three, it would be Jeter, Tejada, and Guillen (never saw him play until last year, but I was very impressed). Obviously, A-Rod would have to bump out Guillen if you consider him eligible; as far as I'm concerned he's a 3B now, since he doesn't figure to shift back any time soon (I hope; as good as A-Rod is, asking Jeter to shift positions would be really wrong). If you asked me that question two years ago I would have said Jeter, Vizquel, and A-Rod. Vizquel to me is the greatest defensive player of my lifetime.
_Lee - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 01:55 PM EST (#8672) #
As for the Hall Watch thread, I'm quite surprised to see that Vizquel was not even mentioned. He deserves serious consideration IMO, although maybe that's in part because I watched him every game throughout the prime of his career.
Mike Green - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 02:30 PM EST (#8673) #
Lee, thanks for your input. While I don't think he belongs in the Hall, you are right that he may very well get serious consideration in the "great defensive shortstops" class. He will probably end up with a career at least as good as Aparicio or Maranville. On that basis, I'll add his name to my list.

Umm, what are you referring to? I wasn't being sarcastic at all.

Hmmm. Jeter over Renteria? That's a interesting question. At first blush, I'm tempted to agree, but I'm not so sure I wouldn't rather have Renteria.

At any rate, A-Rod, Tejada, and some permutation of Jeter and Renteria. (Jeteria?)
_Peter - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 05:40 PM EST (#8677) #
I consider A-Rod to be a 3B..

How bout
Tejada
Michael Young
Renteria
_Peter - Thursday, December 16 2004 @ 05:41 PM EST (#8678) #
Honorable mention for Carlos Guillen
_Eric - Friday, December 17 2004 @ 01:15 AM EST (#8679) #
I'll take Mick's invitation to go beyond three and toss up a top five. I'm not including A-Rod in this.

1. Miguel Tejada
- Think this one is pretty indisputable. He gives you Nomar's bat with Renteria's glove and maybe even Jeter's intangibles.

2. Edgar Renteria
- I'm clearly higher on him than most here, as he provides a really sound overall package.

3. Derek Jeter
- Hard to argue with a .848 career OPS, even with the subpar defense.

4. Nomar Garciaparra
- He'd be #2 if you could rely on him for a full year.

5. Michael Young
- Not as high on him as some. He has the home/road splits that make you think he's a creature of Coors Lite and his range seems to be a stretch at SS.

Tejada, Jeter, Nomar --

Guillen doesn't even touch these three, last season be damned -- i mean, would anyone trade him straight up for any of these guys (salaries not withstanding, but nomar's shaky health included)?

i don't think so --

If salaries entered into the equation for a moment, I would take Renteria. If they didn't, I'd go Jeter. And then I would trade him!

Current SS:

A-Rod

huge gap--senfield (all time great, cultural vanguard) to friends (servicable, remarkable, lasting, satisfying, flawed, overrated) type drop off

Tejada
Nomar
Jeter
Renteria

******If Guillen's performance in 2004 is his creating a new mean performance for himself and not a BradyAndersonianTM spike, then he gets slotted in ahead of Jeter, maybe ahead of Nomar.

I am. Renteria is a very good SS, especially defensively, but overall he's a notch or two below Jeter.
