Another blast from the past while we await the return of baseball to our frosty shores. Here we have Frank Menechino hitting a home run off of our old buddy Mark Hendrickson:

I was all jazzed after I tripped the shutter and heard the roar of the crowd, thinking I had caught this great moment, a player hitting a home run, on film. I forgot that Frank Menechino rarely looks excited. Still, he is hitting a home run, and that's why this image was resurrected from the Bin Of Photographs That Have Not Seen The Light Of Day.

It's an interesting shot NFH.

If you don't mind me asking though; what camera are you using? There's some objectionable image noise in the shot... what ISO did you select?

Sorry for the digital camera lingo, but it's my dayjob...

I used this old-fashioned stuff called "film". Some of us like the grain structure, and don't find it objectionable at all.

Specifically, I was using Ilford's Delta 3200 and a Pentax 67 with the old-style 300mm f4 lens. Exposure was still only 1/500 at f5.6 because the Dome was closed. Image is significantly cropped -- the full image includes the catcher and umpire.

This shot, though it is from the other side and is during a day game, will give you an idea of the angle of view:

It also shows the funky colour characteristics of the lens, which is part of why the b&w with it is so unique.

Those two are the best images I got from the same day as Menechino's homer.

I may shoot some digital this year specifically for Photo of the Week, but that really limits what else I can do with the image.

Out of curiosity, what's your day job?

I work as a manager of Corporate Sales and employee training for Canada's largest photofinishing retailer. You know which one.......... :)

I like your shots though NFH, they're damn fine. I haven't had an opportunity to shoot much baseball recently. I've had an interest in more macro-style shots. Speaking of which, I think I'm going to have to shoot some baseball-related macro shots at work tomorrow.

There's an Olympus E-Volt that's just begging to be used....

Anyways NFH, if you'd like to chat about the photography, drop me a line at my email.
