I saw the below cartoon today and just absolutely could not resist, because it leads to such an interesting QOTD (remember those?) ...

So here's the question ... what else, other than the items shown in the cartoon, would deserve permanent display in Baseball's Hall of Shame in Jamestown, Virgina (and a no-prize to the first person who can explain why I chose that location or can find a city named "Fenimore" as an alternate site!)

  • Hal Chase's uniform?
  • Joe Niekro's emery board?
  • Pumpsie Green's original Red Sox contract?
  • Sammy Sosa's corked bat?
  • Jim Bouton's "greenies"?

What else? And I mean this quite seriously ... what should be exhibits in such a place? And would you visit?

Caramon, you're heartless. The difference between Ankiel throwing wild pitches and Sosa and Bonds's alleged cheating is so obvious it's preposterous for me to point it out. Nobody minds humour, or attempts at humour, but there's a line.

    Jeez.

OK, upon reflection ... George Brett's pin-tar-laden bat would be something to put in the HOS.

Nolan Ryan's Arm? Help me out here ... what'ssat mean?

I'm thinking maybe he was refering to the fact that Ryan could have become one of absolute, upper-crust, top echelon type pitchers instead of simply a great pitcher. The "shame" would would be wasting such a great arm....

    ...at least that's my interpretation.

Gitz I do realize it is heartless, but nonetheless it will stand as one of the craziest things to ever happen in baseball.

As for Ryan's arm, he was great in his time, but could have been even better... Its a crying shame hes not the best pitcher of all time.

The head of Kevin Mitchell's girlfriend's cat

Can someone explain this one to me? Will I regret asking?

As for my suggestion, how about Bud Selig's touppee?

    Nolan Ryan's arm? That's dumb.

Rob Dibble threw as hard as Ryan and he didn't have one-tenth the career. There's a dozen guys who threw nearly as hard as
Ryan who had virtually no major leage career.

Ryan was a tireless worker who made himself a better pitcher as he got older.

Rosanne??? How about What's his name? WIlliam Hung singing the national anthems? Maybe a CD of the greatest anthems for sale in the gift shop.
    VBF - Tuesday, March 29 2005 @ 10:59 PM EST (#108038) #
I would have included William Hung if he had sang the national anthems.

I believe he sang "Take me out to the ball game", which was humourous and not taken offensively.

Now if we want to get into the worst all time "Take me out" singers, its basically anyone that sings it for the Cubs (with exception to Ozzy whom we make exceptions for), therefore the list is endless :)
    VBF - Tuesday, March 29 2005 @ 11:00 PM EST (#108039) #
That should read "sung the national anthems".

Can someone explain this one to me? Will I regret asking?

According to Doc Gooden, one time when Mitchell was drunk and having an argument with his girlfriend, Mitchell took his girlfriend's cat and severed its head with a knife. Snopes has more and there are some doubts about this ever having occurred.

I'm not debating that Dudek. And I wasn't directly talking about his velocity either.

Ryan went up there trying to make every guy he could strike out. Which led to his disturbingly high walk ratio.

Ryan was a showman. If he wanted to he could have been the best pitcher to ever live with his stuff. Without even a shadow of a doubt.

But aside from his Career strikeouts... another milestone... Career walks with 2795 wont be touched either.
    H Winfield Teut - Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 12:09 AM EST (#108048) #
I believe Hung did sing the anthem, not in Toronto but in other parks, during his ten seconds of fame....glad thats over with.
    robertdudek - Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 12:27 AM EST (#108051) #
You are just plain wrong about Ryan.

There's a little thing called command of your pitches. For the first decade of his career, Ryan didn't have very good control, although it improved slowly throughout his career and towards the end was about average for a big leaguer.

That shows that Ryan wasn't just a power pitcher and he did work on his craft. The fact is, he just wasn't one of those pitchers who had the gift of pinpoint control, so he had to settle for being merely a great pitcher.

So, no, I don't think Ryan could have been or should have been the greatest pitcher of his generation - for that you need excellent command of your pitches.

And the idea of strikeouts being a bad thing is ludicrous. Tell that to Randy Johnson or Pedro or Clemens or Koufax in their primes. There's no doubt they were trying to strike guys out just as much as Ryan was. They just had a little or a lot better command of their pitchers, and so kept their walks down.

The most similar pitcher to Ryan was probably Bob Feller; another fireballing workhorse who had control problems early in his career and had to settle for merely being great instead of the greatest of all time.

It would be stupid for a pitching coach to take Nolan Ryan and tell him to quit trying to strikeout guys and become more of a finesse pitcher. Some knucklehead said that to Dwight Gooden after his second year in the bigs and it didn't work out too well (I'm aware there were a lot of other factors).
    CaramonLS - Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 01:36 AM EST (#108057) #
Ryan had much better command then you are giving him credit for. You know that and I know that. Otherwise the guy wouldn't have the insane strikeout numbers that he was able to get.

Definitely no Nolan Ryan artifacts in my Hall of Shame.

    What would be there:
-monuments of Hal Chase and Charles Comiskey
-a replica of a late 70s clubhouse complete with lines of white powder (sugar, of course), and wax figures of Curtis Strong and a manager with his back turned
    Mick Doherty - Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 09:57 AM EST (#108074) #
Another '70s artifact -- the Astros' late-decade rainbow uniforms.

Ryan had good enough command to be an All-Star in the '7os, but clearly his record-setting walk totals indicate he did not have "better command than anyone thinks."
    BallGuy - Wednesday, March 30 2005 @ 10:03 AM EST (#108076) #
In the same vein as Mike's comment (pun intended) how about a bunch of faceless wax figure baseball players with syringes in their arms and Bud Selig with his back turned? Oh wait, we wouldn't need to go to a Hall of Shame to see that, just any ballpark over the past 15-20 years.
It's never too early in the day for a little cynicism.

You can start off with 1969, then move onto the 70's, and swing around past the late 1980's:

Why, in the name of the Detroit Tigers' home whites, is there a number on the pants?

Though, as a Blue Jays fan, I shouldn't be talking about bad uniforms.
