Decepticons outwit the Brain.
Europe conquered by Pistol.
Brutes lose to Fruits.

ALOMAR DIVISION:

Ghost Man On Third handed the Senators their first defeat of the season, essentially a result of his offense being slightly less moribund than mine. Fish Candy and the Mosquitos played to a virtual draw, so neither made up much ground and remained in 2nd and 3rd. The Edmonton Decepticons hurtled from last to 11th with a 12-0-0 dissection of Baird Brain..

Two weeks ago, the Eastern Shore Birds set the all-time BBFL record for WHIP with 0.79. Last week, the Thunderbirds set the all-time BBFL record for wins with 10, and Slippery Pete set the all-time Alomar record for fewest runs scored with 14.

BARFIELD DIVISION:

In a matchup of Roster members, the Pistol Nine tightened their icy death-grip on first with a 9-2-1 clobbering of the European Wannabe. Team Junior Felix leapt into second with a 10-2-0 denunciation of WAMCO. Monkeymen Cubed had a bizarre week, setting the Barfield record for pitching wins with nine but also setting a Barfield worst with a .248 OBP and an all-time BBFL worst .167 batting average.

Monkeymen Cubed had a bizarre week, setting the Barfield record for pitching wins with nine but also setting a Barfield worst with a .248 OBP and an all-time BBFL worst .167 batting average.

Woo! I'm number one! What a week indeed. When I realised that 1-Tool Wonders' team had to go essentially 0-for-the-weekend for me to have a hope of winning any of the offensive categories, I pretty much wrote off this week and prayed that it didn't get worse than 9-3. Thanks to a massive amount of starting pitching and a couple of saves, it didn't. I was sure that my Monkeymen were well on their way to setting a record of some kind, but I didn't know they'd set three of them.

Ugly. Look out Sweaty Guys, we're out for revenge.

No awards this week, only a terse press release.

Two weeks ago, the Eastern Shore Birds set the all-time BBFL record for WHIP with 0.79

And some weeks aren't quite so good. My Birds led the Cannibals in their Alomar match-up most of the week, but poor outings by Beckett, Lee and Wuertz reversed the score in the man-eaters' favor.

Cliff Lee shares (9.00 ERA, 2.20 whip, and 1.00 k/bb in 5 innings) the goat-horns with "Who" Weurtz (13.50, 2.70, .80 in 3.1 innings). Beckett gets a pass because he's Josh Beckett.

Kudos to Dunn, Cabrera (M), and Gibbons (really ... .385 OBP, 1.083 SLG).

You can call me the Dodgers of the Barfield Division. I thought with my team I would dominate the pitching categories and hope for a split in the hitting ones.

So far this year the Posse are:
Hitting: 19-5-0
Pitching: 10-12-2

My pitching has actually been better than my hitting (90 roto points vs 83), so I guess good luck + bad luck = no luck (0.2)

If it weren't for bad luck, the Garth Iorg Gremlins would have no luck at all. Of course, as we have no bats (or working ones, at any rate), luck wouldn't be the only thing we'd lack.

However, like their irrepressibale and hardworking namesake, this is a blue collar bunch and we'll get things turned around. Watch out, Blocked Youngsters!

Last week the Decepticons cancelled weekly awareds and held a team meeting to discuss being in the Alomar basement. Boy did my squad ever respond. A 12-0 week has catapulted the Decepticons from 20th to 11th in Alomar. There's no telling how high my squad can soar on the wings of my brilliant pep talks. Awards are hereby reinstated.

Bonds: Alex Rios - last week's whipping boy is this week's Bonds recipient with a sparkling .478/.500/.739 line and 2 bonus steals.

Neifi: Ruben Gotay has hit the waiver wire if anyone wants him. JJ Hardy, you're next.

Pedro: Javier Vazquez. He's finally justifying why I made him one of my keepers. Honourable mention to waiver wire gem Derrick Turnbow.

Lima: Goes to the walking machine that is Noah Lowry.

Not quite sure what I've done to deserve the unluckiest team, plus the hardest schedule in the land (perhaps I'm not Canadian enough?) but I am second overall in roto standings which is a small consolation. I know my team is performing well, just others are having freakish weeks when they face me. After a 10-2 week awards are definatly in order.

MVH: ARod again, with an honorable mention to Phat Albert. A 6/12/1/.429/.520/1.190 line will win out every time.

LVH: the outfield trifecta of Byrnes-Nady-Dye. I'm slightly less down on Nady as he carried my team the first week, but a combined 6 for 43 is just horrendous. Waiver wire pick ups Nook Logan and Jason Ellison are holding the fort until they turn it around, I'm hoping for mediocrity at this point.

MVP: Tomko comes through after being called out last week and Bush wasn't that bad, I just sat him in fear.

LVP: Prior was chugging along until one fateful inning destroyed his weeks numbers

Overall my team isn't looking that bad. I havent received and contributions from Ordonez or Juan Gone and my other bench spot is taken up by Gathright, so the hitting side is slim. They should all be back for a mid season push towards the title. However, if they can't do anything when they get back some trades will have to be made to shore up that outfield.

This was a fun week mostly due to the records my good friend Jack Foley set this week. I'm also proud to report that the Wonders' 6th (5th according to Yahoo!) place standing is the highest since we entered contention last spring.

Bonds: Derrek Lee (8/13/1/ .455/.519/1.091)
Neifi: Steve Finley (1/2/1/ .053/.053/.211)

Pedro: C.C. Sabathia (7.0/1/0.00/0.57/4.00)
Lima: Kerry Wood (3.0/0/9.00/2.00/3.00)

Biggest surprise of the week was Christian Guzman who had a .450/.450/.600 line in 20AB.

My Thunderbirds' pitching staff had about as good of a week as you could possibly hope for:

84.1 IP, 10 Wins, 1.60 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 3.00 K/BB

Jon Garland came up huge with back-to-back shutouts, and Johan Santana continued his mastery. You know that you had a good week when your 3rd most valuable pitcher (Doc) threw a complete game shutout!

With Walker, Cameron and Benson all due to come off the DL shortly, I have a lot of depth that I'm looking to package for one upper-level player. If you're looking to solidify your team (I have pitching and middle infield depth to spare), get in touch.

4 weeks - 10.6 lucky wins. Smoke and mirrors, baby!

Bonds: TIE! Alex Gonzalez (FL) 3/6/0 .462/.500/.923 (he played better once I lost a waiver claim on Scutero to replace him)
Grudzielanek – 4/3/0 .526/.571/.947 (includes hitting for the cycle)

Neifi: Holliday – 0/1/0 .083/.083/.250

Pedro: Wagner – 4/0/3 0.00/0.50/INF (3 saves tied me for the category which was big with Izzy getting hurt)

Lima: V Santos – 5.2/0/0 9.53/1.94/1.33

I wouldn't sweat the luck factor too much right now. We're only 18% of the way through the regular season, and anything can, and will, happen. Right now, the Mighty Midgets have 25 steals, Freddy Beach Fracas only 8, but Fred has more victories.

The Midgets did get alomst half of their steals in one week, somewhat lessening the power of their high roto total. But, at least in terms of steals, which team would you rather own. Assuming these first four weeks accurately reflect the steal capabilities of each team, the Midgets should end up with several more wins in this category than Fred.

The Bashers had a good all around week as both Pujols and Tejada took their rightful place as the best hitters on the squad. The rest of the squad did their part for a sweep of the offensive categories.

The pitching staff performed about as well as I could expect. What a difference having healthy starters makes. Smoltz and Hampton have been veteran anchors while Meche and Young had a nice pitcher's duel against one another to cement a solid week from the starters. Harang has pitched solidly as a late draft inning eater.

The relief staff has been solid ratio wise with Hawkins, Rhodes, Hernandez, and Sisco performing well. I'm just not getting the saves at the moment though. If anyone is willing to deal a closer (regardless of quality) I'm willing to talk trade.

Totally a weird week- I didn't expect to win any of the pitching categories except IP, but then your starters imploded. Totally expected Beckett to carry you on Sunday- I had Buce Chen going, who would've guessed he'd pitch better?

Convinced I would've won RBI if I hadn't lost 2 games to snowm wuth Barmes and Atkins hitting, but then, they might've gone 0-20 and cost me BA...

Good point Lucas, I should really look more in depth at the numbers before sticking my foot in my mouth it seems. At quick glance it also seems that the "luck" factor is closely tied in sith the strength of schedule. This may seem ridiculously obvious but since we face the first three teams again, in which I had a 13-22 record, this may cost me the title if I have the same results weeks from now. I'll take this to mean that I need to address up my weaknesses but I also know that there is a real rough patch coming up at the end. Perhaps we can move to a sort of BCS system where strength of schedule is included in deciding who is champion?

Yes, the BCS has been so successful and uncontroversial, I'd be a fool not to do it.

Anyhoo, you didn't put your foot in your mouth, as you can't be expected to remember the exact stats from week to week. Re the 'strength of schedule,' I will be instituting a change next year. Yahoo sets the schedule solely on the basis of order of signup, and I can't override it. Next year, I plan to have the top four teams from the previous year sign up first, then the next four, and so on. That way, each team will have repeat matchups against teams close to them in the previous year's standings.

Well thats one convinced then :) If we had done it that way (in order of finish like you said) throught the first three weeks I would have been 17-18-1 instead of 13-22-1 so a decent improvement. At the end of the season I'll go back and look at all the numbers to see what might have been and if it mean I would have won, I'm lodging an official protest ;p
NDG - Wednesday, May 04 2005 @ 08:26 AM EDT (#115484) #
I know you're just kidding Ben, but it seems several teams in the Barfield have the same problem which is why the roto and real standings are so out of whack. My team (Lubumbashi Posse) is currently third in roto, and has already played the teams in 1st, 4th and 6th. I won't complain cause I figure my team should start sucking right when I have my run at the bottom teams.
Coach - Wednesday, May 04 2005 @ 08:51 AM EDT (#115487) #
Scott, excellent idea about the unbalanced schedule. Ben, as I'm sure you know, many teams are completely different in April and September, so don't concede the rematches just yet. For example, last-place Baird Brain's early results are skewed by playing without Berkman, Gagne and Bobby Crosby.

Like the Blue Jays, my club is a few games over .500 through a fairly tough early schedule, thanks to Shea Hillenbrand. I might have a better record -- the Phillies certainly would -- if Jim Thome’s back wasn’t killing him. (At least I didn’t get scooped on Ryan Howard, but he’s still a rookie K machine trying to replace one of the game’s greatest sluggers.) Another superstar, Curt Schilling, is also limping; needless to say, his Red Sox aren’t firing on all cylinders either.

While the stats suggest I haven’t quite as "lucky" as Pistol, it seems like I’ve narrowly avoided getting killed in three of the first four weeks. Knocked out of contention in the pitching ratios by some lousy starts early in Week 4, I used the Chatsworth Rotation™ to salvage IP and W against Homer Jays, whose hitters were fortunately even worse than mine. This week, with my RBI/SLG still MIA, I’m hoping for enough speed and OBP to earn a couple of hitting points against the powerful Gorillas, and a couple more pleasant pitching surprises like Josh Towers last night would be helpful.

The Walrus front office is always open to win-win trade proposals. Billy Wagner is available for a keeper and with too many 2B, I'd move one of Cantu, Womack and Kennedy for an equivalent (i.e., mediocre) SS-eligible MI.
