Well, here it is: the first Photo of the Day from this past weekend against the Nationals. I figured I'd start off with the new guy getting his pants dirty as he slides into third base:

For those interested in the technology of these things, all of the stuff against the Nationals that I'll be posting was shot on 35mm film, either Fuji's NPZ 800 or Press 1600. This one is NPZ. The film was processed with a partial bleach-skip: instead of bleaching for the full time, I ran it for about half, then used an additional fixer to give the negatives a bit of permanence. Two different cameras were used; one was a Pentax ME Super, and the other was a Pentax LX. Almost everything was shot with the legendary Pentax SMC-A* 200mm f2.8 lens with a Sigma 1.4x teleconverter.

If you have any questions about this stuff, feel free to ask.

Wow. Just wow. Terrific shot - I love the dirt spray.

(Hey, all you kids out there - note Castilla's letter-perfect form receiving the ball at third base. :)

By the way, correct me if I'm wrong, but is this Aaron Hill's first major league hit?

Could be quite the memorable photo someday.

It looks like it's from the triple to me. Though i have no good reason to think so since i was listening to the game on the radio at the time.

You beat me to it Craig. Even a guy who's been around for what feels like decades still has to field a throw cleanly and there's still only one way to do it right: two hands.

NFH - absolutely fantastic. Keep it up.

Awesome. Thanks NFH.

Thanks, guys.

This shot is from early on Saturday -- I wasn't there on Friday, I was only on the third base side for the first four or five innings on Saturday and I only shot NPZ for the first five rolls that day before I switched to Press 1600 for the rest of the weekend, so this image has to be from the first half of Saturday's game. Looking at the box score, it must be Hill advancing to third on Huckaby's lineout in the bottom of the second.

I'd like to pretend that it's Hill's triple, but it ain't.

You can tell it's not his triple due to the fact that his batting gloves are in his back pocket and his hands are bare. So either he wasn't the batter of the play or he can whip off his gloves and stick them in his pocket while sprinting in about 13 seconds to 3rd base! Or potentially he's really odd/supersitious and hits without gloves, yet with them on him. Great shot NFH.

Also note that Armas is just arriving to back up the base - presumably caught off guard by the runner advancing on the flyout. Whereas if this had been the triple, he'd already be there.

Great shot, Aaron. Did you get any of Dave Bush playing catch, or jogging in the outfield, or stretching, or something.

The man needs some POTW mojo!

I thought that there wasn't any Dave Bush on the rolls I had processed so far, but going over them just now I spotted him in the group standing in the dugout waiting to congratulate Hill after he scored on the next play after the one pictured here.

Wow, my very first 35 mm camera that I ever owned was a Pentax ME Super. I was in Italy in 1983, travelling around Europe using a Eurail pass with my brother. My Kodak instamatic broke - so I went into a Photography store in Milan, and bought the ME Super. It cost me 1 million. 1 million Lira that is - which was roughly $165 US at the time. That's what got me started in this wonderful world of photography!

NFH,

I believe that you were featured prominantly this weekend on TV, in the camera bay. You're hair is longer than it was last year. I'm trying to piece together my weekend to tell you which game it was but I'm frazzled right now.

Am I to understand that there is no Jays on TV until Friday?

Games are supposed to be on "Rogers Ontario" (whatever that is).

What is on TSN / RSN night that is so much more important than a set of games vrs. the World Series Champs?
HollywoodHartman - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 05:18 PM EDT (#117576) #
It's the same channel that Oakland series was on, check through the 40's and 50's

Anyone know what station/channel the game is on tonight (if any) for Satellite? Specifically Expressvu? Never heard of "Rogers Ontario" before and I have a sneaking suspicion that you may not be able to get it without cable.

I haven't seen the tape yet, but I hear I was on TV on Saturday. And yeah, I'm trying to grow my hair -- it's in the awkward stage right now.

This ME Super is my second one. I bought the first one used in 1989, as an upgrade from the old screwmount gear I started with. That one passed away about five years ago after I broke a tooth on one of the gears in the advance mechanism. Basically, I wore it out by taking way too many photographs. That was when I bought the LX, which is a fantastic camera in every way, but when another ME Super came along at a bargain price I had to have it -- the LX is much noisier, bigger and heavier. The LX has a lot going for it, but if you want to be quiet and unobtrusive the ME Super is the king. But this new one is silver, and the old one was black. I miss it.

Where'd your ME end up, Kevin?

Sportsnet is showing the Memorial Cup tonight, while TSN picks up the NBA playoffs. And yeah, I think that Rogers Ontario channel is only for cable viewers, not satellite people.

I presently live near Yale University, and a student bought my ME Super and all my Pentax lenses a few years back for some classes she was taking. It was then that I went all Nikon.
