The Jays could not salvage a split of their four-game set with Oakland this afternoon. Chad Gaudin's ERA is now higher than Ted Lilly's.

This is a simple game.
ya throw the ball,
ya hit the ball,
ya catch the ball.

And when you don't...

If you're going to stick with veterans, they had better be good players because they only have one way to go. For myself, I'd like to see the kids up and playing every day. That goes for Adams, Hill, Bush and Gross. As a fan, I'd gladly take the medicine of some losses as they learn their craft.

The Jays are just 5 1/2 games out, 1/2 a game ahead of the Yankees and over 500 still (just 1 game, but over). No need to write the season off just yet. This game sucked though as I finally had time to relax and watch. Sigh. Guess that new bbq had to be assembled sometime.

The next week should be interesting, as it will show us a lot about the manager. Will Hill still get lots of playing time with no DH available? Vs lefties (next 2 games) I figure we'll see Shea and Aaron in the lineup but vs righties? Should be interesting to see on Wednesday and the weekend.

Wow does Wilner ever seem negative today.

Anyone agree with him that Walker should be in the starting rotation?

I think that it's still too early for that.

If you think you're contending to win something this year, OK, Walker should start. But otherwise, what is the point?

Well, the Jays continue to lose whenever I listen to the game on the radio on a vacation. No more summer vacations for me. By the fourth inning, I opted for Van Halen's greatest hits instead of this game, to remind me of Mike Bordick's 2003 season...or Huckaby's 2005... :)

If you didn't like McAfee Stadium before, you probably don't after this series.

Let's just say that today was a baseball game. It happens.

I'm all for looking at glasses half full, but in this case they seem half full of gasoline. True, the Jays are 1/2 game up on the Yankees, but that's not going to last even until midweek. Five and a half out seems fine, but the O's, Red Sox and Yankees are pretty formidable obstacles. The wild card is coming out of the central, I'm guessing.

I agree Walker in the rotation seems odd unless they're gearing up for a run, except beyond Halladay and Chacin, they have nothing. Lilly may pull through, or he may be out of gas. Gaudin, Towers, Bush and whomever else seem not ready for the show. Walker may be needed even to give the Jays a chance at winning 3 out of every 5.

I didn't expect this team to be better or worse than within five games of .500, but after the early promise, coming back to earth sucks.

Blowouts happen. Oh well. It's still just a loss. I am disappointed we've been losing ground instead of catching up while the other teams near them struggle, but I didn't go into this season with any real expectations of competing, so I'm enjoying just being in the race. This year is realistically about development. Isn't it nice to have a team that is developing playing .500 ball?

I look at it this way.

The Jays are, basically, a team who's a little better than a .500 team.

Throughout the year they'll have hot streaks and cold streaks, but will, after 162 games, arrive at a point a little better than .500.

This is one of the cold streaks.

John, by what technological voodoo did you manage a double post three hours and 24 minutes apart?
John Northey - Sunday, June 05 2005 @ 10:43 PM EDT (#118703) #
Dang, just came back and noticed the double post. Left the computer on while doing other stuff, hit the back key a few times and I must've hit the space or something causing it to post my earlier post again. Ooops. Sorry about that.

On topic - noticed that the Jays are 5th in runs scored, OPS, and 6th in RC/27 in the AL on ESPN. Who'd have thought? Only problem is 4 of the 5 ahead of them in all but RC/27 are Baltimore/NY/Boston with Tampa Bay also ahead of them in RC/27. Only Texas sneaks into the top 5 from outside the East. Jays are a 'mere' 7th in ERA after today.

It's a delicate balance, I think. Too little opportunity to play, and the kids don't improve. Too many losses, and the (more casual) fans don't come out - and, worse still, the club won't be able to sign free agents next year to fill gaps, as such players tend to want to play for winning teams.

Hill's been playing pretty much every day; I assume he just got a day off today. And I don't like the idea of platooning Adams with McDonald, but McDonald usually hits lefties pretty well.

As for Bush: the Jays need to decide whether Towers and Lilly fit into their plans going forward. I wouldn't move either of them out of the rotation for Bush unless J.P. decides to dump one of them. Halladay, obviously, stays in. Chacin and Gaudin are young pitchers in their own right.

Forgot to mention Gross: I'd like to see him master Triple-A before coming up again. At this point, I'm not sold on him.

I agree with Mike Green about playing the young players. I am not saying rush them, but to make them tip your hand is wait too long. Many players don't tear up AAA, not even big leaguers. Gross is not the Babe, but he has power. The Jays need some of that. I like the Cat and other veterans, but let the young players really show what they have.
