While the history of the BBFL is perhaps slightly less rich and colorful than the National League, it does offer some insight into how well teams can expect to perform in the second half. In reviewing the inaugural, one-division league of 2003 and the two-division format of 2004, I’ve unearthed the following revelations:

The magic number for the BBFL appears to be 12. No team ranked 12th or below at midseason has ever improved enough to reach the Championship playoffs. Conversely, no team among the top 12 at this point has ever finished in the bottom three.

1st place has its privileges. In the Alomar Division, the team in 1st at the midway point has finished 1st in both previous seasons. In Barfield’s inaugural season, Ghost Man on Third fell to 2nd by season’s end.

Being among the top six at the midway point does not provide much comfort.. While teams ranked 1st or 2nd have always reached the Championship playoffs, six of the twelve teams ranked #3-#6 failed, and three of those teams missed the playoffs altogether. Strangely, every team ranked 9th at midseason has entered the top six by the end of the regular season. Jason Stark would be proud. As mentioned, no team ranked below 11th at midseason has made the Championship bracket.

What of the teams trapped in their division’s cellar? Surprisingly, only two of the six teams ranked 18th or 19th at the midway point of the season finished among the bottom three. One team, Thunderbirds in 2003, rose all the way to 7th (see related entry below). On the other hand, no team in last place at the midway point has ever finished above 19th.

No team has ever risen from the middle of the pack at the halfway point to claim 1st place. The two greatest second-half reversals belong to teams climbing from near the bottom to the Consolation Bracket playoffs. In 2003, the Thunderbirds were in 18th place with a record of 53-74-5 but finished in 7th thanks to a division-best .648 winning percentage in the second-half and finished in 7th. Last year, the Austin Senators played .439 ball in the first half and .648 ball in the second half, climbing from 16th place to 8th.

The greatest second-half collapse belongs to Alomar’s Moscow Rats. The Rats held third place and were 22 games over .500 at the halfway point. Afterwards, they played .299 ball (35-88-9) and avoided relegation by only two games. Interestingly, the second and third largest declines belong to teams in 1st place at midseason. Both cases (Gashouse Gorillas in 2003 and Ghost Man on Third last year in Barfield) were superior first-half teams that played .500 ball in the second half. The Gorillas maintained 1st place while Ghost Man fell to 2nd.

I propose we move to a FSL setup where the first half winner advances, or in this case gets promoted, effective the beginning of the year. No?

After setting an ERA record the Nine came back to earth this week with a 5.97 ERA. Scott Rolen's return is a welcome addition to a struggling offense.

Awards!

Bonds: Dejesus - .364/.462/.591, 4/3/1
Neifi: D Young - .174/.231/.217, 0/3/0

Pedro: Isringhausen - 3 saves, 3 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, INF K/BB
Lima: Kip Wells - Shelled by the Yanks and Red Sox.

I will forever regret the "autopick" button that I left on during Round 2 of the Carter draft. Having a terrific offensive season, and squad (19 - 19 - 11 - 20 - 19 - 20), I accidentally selected Barry Bonds over my intended choice of Roy Halladay. My pitching (12 - 9 - 6 - 12 - 6 - 9) could sure use the help, not to mention a keeper.

My awards:
Neifi-Cesar Izturis-O-for-everything
Bonds-My two Cubs, despite a 1-6 W-L week, Lee and Burnitz put up lines of 5 4 1 .500 .520 .750, and 6 4 0 .522 .577 .870 respectively.
Pedro-No one really, but I guess Jason Johnson-10.0 1 0 0.90 1.40 1.25
Lima-Tough 2-start week for Kip Wells-7.2 0 0 14.09 2.87 0.33

Best Eh Hitter this week: Bill Mueller - 10rbi, 400/435/750 - Who gave this guy the juice this week?

Worst Eh Hitter this week: Carl Crawford - 0 SB, 222/222/370 - Oh...by the way Carl...you're on this team for steals. START RUNNING!!!

Best Eh Pitcher this week: Rodrigo Lopez - 1.12 ERA, 0.63 Whip, 7k/bb ... and he could be yours in a trade. I have too many above average pitchers right now. Talk to me.

Worst Eh Pitcher this week: Greg Maddux - 17.18, 2.73 ... Hey, even Mr. Consistency has a bad week every now and then.

As my team falls further and further down the standings, I haven't been as quick to rehash my team's weekly trials and tribulations. That stated, I always read this thread with interest and appreciate all the work you put into the stats Scott.

Does my position at the top of the strength of opposition standings indicate my opponants playing really well against me, more so than anyone else? Or me making my opponents look real good?
I'd like to thank Kieth Foulke and Ted Lilly for being awful so far this year. Also, Ichiro, if you could go back to hitting like you did last year, I would be more than pleased.

There's been somewhat of a controversy brewing in the Carter division as a trade was vetoed last week. While the move generated a fair bit of discussion within Carter, I believe it is a matter which directly affects all three divisions, warranting further discussion.

The constitution has this to say about disputed trades:
"All trades are subject to review for 48 hours by the Rules Committee, which has the power to overturn a trade if it is deemed to be unfair or against the best interests of the league. Formal objections to any trade (via e-mail or on the league message board) by owners not on the committee will be considered prior to any ruling. No member of the Rules Committee will be allowed to vote on approving a trade involving their own team(s) and if the committee is deadlocked, the trade will be nullified."

While the particulars of the trade aren't overly important, what I find vital is the determination of what determines fairness and the best interests of the league. If there is no reason to suspect foul play (collusion or someone throwing in the towel), then I imagine it is quite difficult to prove a trade to be unfair or against the league's interests.

In the very early stages of last season, I recall having some objections to a trade in Barfield involving A-Rod. Craig B who is comissioner of Barfield articulated the sentiment that if both owners can give cogent reasons for wanting the trade to go through, and no collusion is suspected, then the trade should go ahead. If this is not the case, then the job of the Rules Committee is essentially to judge if a trade is balanced or close enough to balanced to go through. This is certainly a tricky matter.

The current Carter trade that was overthrown was composed as follows:
Jeter, Figgins, Russ Ortiz
for
Dimitri Young, Street, Davies, Barmes

To my knowledge no explanation was given to the league regarding why the trade was overturned. I firmly believe that both parties involved in a trade that is overturned deserve a full explanation of the Rules Committee's determination. If it was suspected foul play, say so. If it was that the trade is unbalanced, say so, and say in what direction.

As a footnote, but an important one, a trade was approved in the Alomar division last week that to this eye seems much less balanced than the above vetoed Carter trade: Todd Helton straight up for Felipe Lopez. This trade was formally protested, so the Rules Committee had a say in its approval.

In conclusion, I ask, what is the lens through which the Rules Committee makes its determinations regarding protested trades? Perhaps the constitution can be amended to include a clearer basis for these difficult decisions to be made in the future.

Both votes in the Carter Division protest of Jeter et al. for Young et al. were 3-2. Both times, three voters (2 against, 1 for) indicated difficulty in making a decision. Given the closeness of the vote, there was no consensus, but two members mentioned that the two best players in the deal (Jeter and Figgins) were moving the same direction. That seemed to tip the scale for them.

In the case of Lopez-for-Helton in Alomar, every voter who commented proclaimed the trade awful but acceptable. Though no one said so specifically, perhaps the overriding view is that Lopez is a young shortstop whose statistics are so much better than Helton’s right now that they offset Helton’s history of better performance.

This situation gives the appearance of a double standard. All I can say is that in one case, the vote was a very close call. In the other case, the decision was unanimous but arguably just as close given the feedback I received.

I have no problem with committee’s voting or the rationale behind those votes. They’ve had to make several difficult decisions on short notice and have done so. Having said that, the BBFL has grown from one division to three divisions in two years while the rules committee is essentially unchanged. To my knowledge, it was assembled before the advent of the Barfield Division, much less Carter, and hasn’t had many protests to adjudicate. Carter Division owners have had a lively discussion over these trades. Would their discussion have influenced the committee or provided information or context that might have helped in their decision-making process? Possibly.

I think the time has come to revamp the committee to better suit the three-division format. I will be emailing everyone shortly to begin that process.

It's shaping up as a pretty good race for playoff position in Alomar, with a bunch of teams with a legitimate shot at it.

The luckiest and unluckiest teams face off this week, and here's hoping that the luck starts to even out this week.

The Thunderbirds have starting pitching to move (Garland, Chacin, Lohse, Pineiro, Benson - I'd even consider Halladay and Santana for a keeper of similar value), and would welcome a bat or a closer in return.

I'm pleased the rules committee were able to make their decision. I'm in Carter, and although I didn't contact the rules committee and only noticed the trade after the contraversy was already beginning, I did think the trade was obviously unfair (with the team receiving Jeter and Figgins for an (injured Barmes) and Street obviously winning),

In other news, how's this for truth in advertising:

Bodell's Bashers:

best offense in any of the divisions with a 20 - 15 - 20 - 15 - 20 - 17 for a total of 13 away from perfect. Now if only the H2H record reflected the roto record I'd be good to go.

Dr. Zarco - Tuesday, June 21 2005 @ 10:46 AM EDT (#120127) #
Michael, my Hot Men are only 12 points from a perfect offensive squad, with 9 of those points coming from the SB category. Careful with boasts of best offense! :=)

Lucas, as always thanks for all the time and thought you put into managing all our leagues, especially when sticky trades come up. I happen to disagree with the ruling, but as long as it was debated by numerous people, than that's all I ask.
Michael - Tuesday, June 21 2005 @ 10:04 PM EDT (#120235) #
Mea culpa Dr. Zarco (I actually got the math wrong as I gave each of your 19 as 2 away from perfect for no good reason). Actually, you are wrong that you are 12 away from perfect, you are really only 11.5 away from perfect (you are tied with Baseball North for 1st in RBI).
