OK, that was weird. In so many ways. For example:

Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
S Downs (L, 0-1) 2.2 4 5 5 1 1 1 51-31 6.75
J Miller 2.1 5 4 4 0 2 3 41-24 15.43
B League 2.0 5 3 3 1 1 1 40-23 7.94
V Chulk 1.0 1 0 0 0 0 0 11-7 3.98
And Texas went into the 9th leading 12-3, and needed to bring in their closer before it was over. The Fighting Jays!

During those middle innings, I'd never have guessed that this game woudl end with me with a smile on my face, and thinking positively about the Jays.

but there it is.

hope to hell they can pull one out tommorrow. I still say let Lilly start.

Terry Francona makes it official, by the way, regarding the All-Star starter:

Francona, who will manage the AL stars, told reporters Saturday that he would have started Halladay.

"That's how much we think of Halladay," Francona said. "We've seen too much of him."

From the Chat tonight:

Let the record show that I had a jinx tonight and and everyone knows the only way to rid ourselves of it is through pointless statements of pessmism.

But then I go and have a look at some of the threads at the Bluejays.com Fan Forum, and am reminded that they are always the anti-jinx.

The Jays will be lucky to fly out of Texas with the shirts still on their backs. What a nightmare!! Last night we have Menechino snailing around at second and flailing at ground balls....Doc gets a comebacker off his ankle and is put out of commission....Hillenbrand tops it all off with a errant throw to start the slide. And tonight they jump all over Gambler only to be thwarted by poor judgement by the umpiring crew and horrendous pitching by the Illustrated Man and his sidekick League. This series can't get any worse barring Vernon Wells faliing down a manhole.

You know what happened, eh? Two of the farm affiliates had already lost 12-3, and there was no way on this earth the big club was going to let that happen to them. Someone's got to show leadership!

It'd be nice to win one of these. Texas isn't that good a club. Maybe tomorrow.

I know, VBF. I'm just looking for a fresh scapegoat. Everyone seemed inclined to blame me for Friday's calamities....

Illustrated man and his sidekick League? I think the name "Not Ready for Primetime Players" is more appropriate.

You can blame me:

I was having too much fun in the pool at my Aunt's house when the game started and decided not to get out. I didn't come out until it was dark and I found out that the Jays were trailing 12-3.

I dried my hair, packed my bags and put on my hat. Wandered around finding stuff for a bit. Got in the car to hear Jerry Howarth say "Three across, three on, and still no outs!"

Holy hell, the power of my hat is just unbelievable. I should never take it off, even for swimming. I'm sorry, guys, I let the team down.

No, see it was my fault after all. See, last night was my fault because I was hungry and I had to choose between eating a plum or an apricot. I chose both, and well--look what my selfishness did.

Tonight, I only had apricots left, and everyone knows that apriots are nothing compared to plumbs. I mean plums are like an explosion of goodness in every bite. Apricots are dry with little flavour. So it was only fitting that we lose this game.

See. That made complete sense.

horrendous pitching by the Illustrated Man and his sidekick League.

Whoah, whoah, whoah. Let's not tamper with the Hawaiian Punchout now. He wasn't good yes, but to say he's a sidekick?....that's not fair :)

So fair and foul a day I have not seen.

In the Wayne and Schuster version, wasn't it "So fair and foul a ball I have not seen"?

(For those who haven't seen it, the sketch was Shakespearian Baseball, and it was basically a baseball game with all the dialogue lifted from Shakespeare. Highlight: the umpire cries, "A hit! A most palpable hit!")

Fox Sports Southwest TV guys in the ninth inning:

Tom Grieve: "Who would've thought we'd see Coco Cordero in this game?

Whoever Was Filling In For Josh Lewin: "And yet here it is, a save opportunity for the Ranger closer."

TG: "I'll tell you what, I'm glad we're not seeing Carlos Delgado heading to the plate right about now."

WWFIFJL: "Nobody is ever going to mistake Frank Menechino for Delgado."

Don't forget about interleague play. Clearly the AL has the best of it this year.

Does this loss officially count against my hat's record?

I anxiously await the the day they finally replace umpires with machines. Until then, I'd be quite happy if they would replace Rod Black ('Oooooooooooooooooooooooh, Mi-chael Yooung!' You make routine plays look so HOT!) with a machine...or a pencil.

Next time we go as a large enough group - the painted chests read Q U E S T E C.

The American League by Prospectus's "Third-Order Wins and Losses", an advanced measure of team quality that takes into account individual offensive and defensive events (and not the large-order runs scored and allowed or team wins and losses). This is before last night's games.

Red_Sox 51-34
Yankees 47-37
Orioles 47-38
Blue_Jays 45-40
Devil_Rays 30-56

Indians 50-36
White_Sox 46-38
Twins 46-38
Tigers 43-40
Royals 33-52

Rangers 48-36
Angels 48-37
Athletics 46-39
Mariners 40-45

Some items of note - (1) I said the White Sox are the fourth best team in their divison, and I still believe it; (2) If you're looking for a reason why this team roughed us up and took our lunch money twice, check out the relative records; and (3) this Blue Jay team isn't unlucky to be where it's at, but it's a good team. I still believe.

When is Koskie back?

And what do I do about my wallpaper? I spent three glorious days with your Doc collage on my desktop. On the third day, he breaks his leg.

Christy, come home. Tell me that all is forgiven...

When is Koskie back?

On Tuesday, Dr Prison Fence addressed this subject in Notes: Koskie on the mend.

"Corey Koskie has heard the pronouncements that he'll be back on the field by the end of July, but he's hoping his injured thumb will heal a little quicker."

He hit off a tee for the first time on Monday, and he was taking ground balls this week. There will almost certainly be a rehab assignment. Last week of July looks about right to me.

"Nobody is ever going to mistake Frank Menechino for Delgado."

Ouch indeed. The weird thing is, if Carlos Delgado had been on the Blue Jays this year, Aaron Hill would still be in AAA, Eric Hinske would be playing every day at third base, and we'd be carrying on just the same as now. Hill is hitting pretty much exactly the same as Delgado since he came up.

uglyone - Sunday, July 10 2005 @ 01:04 AM EDT (#122119) #
Does it hurt all the more to think that if Gibbons hadn't given up, and put in Hinske for Shea, that Shea would have been the tying run coming up to the plate with no outs, and not Hinske?

(hey, even if you don't like Shea...still, he ain't hinske!)

The Lesson to be learned?

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever put in Hinske, no matter what the situation. Ever.

Ahahaha. Some good lines in this thread, for sure.

I think this is the first time that I've come home from work, seen that the Blue Jays lost and said "Damn, I wish I could have seen that!" That ninth inning must have been fun. The third inning ... not so much.

What did the umpires do that pissed some of you off? I guess I'll wait for the Game Report. :P

Perhaps the worst game recap ever on ESPN.com. All fawning over Kenny Rogers...virtually NO mention of 9th inning comeback. Too bad shoving cameramen makes for a better story than an improbable comeback like that.

Let's hope Rogers takes a seat in favor of Bonderman on Tuesday.

Guess the umps figured if one got it wrong they might as well all get it wrong.... but it really may have been the turning point.....
