Davis Romero led the Fisher Cats to their 5th win in a row, this time over the Portland Sea Dogs, as the farm affiliates went 1-1 on a rain-soaked Friday in the East.

Syracuse @ Pawtucket, ppd. rain

Portland 0 @ New Hampshire 3

Davis Romero was in and out of trouble, but threw 6 shutout innings to move to 4-2 on the season.  He walked 4 and struck out 6, and gave up 5 hits, as he lowered his ERA to below 2.  Chip Cannon homered in the 2nd inning, and then the Cats scored a couple of unearned runs in the 3rd with David Smith's triple sandwiched between 2 errors.  Curtis Thigpen reached base in all three of his plate trips, with two singles and a hit by pitch.  David Smith threw out a runner at first to record a double play, in addition ot contributing his triple. Adam Lind took an 0-fer. Jason Arnold and Tracy Thorpe pitched the last 3 innings in fine fashion, with Thorpe throwing a perfect ninth including two punch-outs.

Dunedin  2 @ Palm Beach 5

The D'Jays had plenty of baserunners, but four double plays were their undoing.  Aaron Mathews went 4-4 with a double, a triple and a stolen base, while Robinson Diaz and Eric Nielsen had two hits each.  Orlando Trias started and was rocked for all five Cardinal runs in 3 innings of work.  T.J. Gornati and Justin James held the fort admirably to give their mates a chance to catch up.

Cannon now sports a line of .272/.357/.482 - Pretty good hitting in AA for a pretty extreme pitcher's park in NH.

Actually, that was Cannon's line before yesterday - its now:

.274/.356/.504

Not too shabby considering the slow start he had. Lets hope this guy keeps the momentum going - it would be nice to have a real legit power prospect in the system apart from Griffin, who has really struggled to start the year.

Cannon is still striking out about 30% of the time.  I imagine that he'll have to improve on that if he's going to have success at higher levels.

I'm not sure if anyone has posted it around here, but there's now minor league splits available online.

Thanks a lot for the link to the splits.

Far as Cannon goes, you're probably right that he'll have to improve on the Ks a bit in order to ultimately succeed, but Howard had similar K numbers, and has turned out alright so far - there is hope for Cannon, although the odds of him turning into Howard  might still be slim.

Kyle Yates got the start in Dunedin tonight.  He had been used out of the bullpen since his demotion.  I think he is taking the place of Robert Ray, but I can't be sure.  Anyone have insight?

Ryan Patterson is back in the Dunedin lineup, and has drawn walks in each of his two PAs.

Billy Carnline didn't have his control tonight and is being beaten up, six runs in four innings, three hits but two of them were homers.
